A New Listing May Have Uncovered The Title Of The Next X-MEN Film; Plus Details On When It Might Start Filming

X-Men: Supernova

If recent reports are to be believed, that will either be the official title or is the working title for the seventh main storyline X-Men film (eleventh overall).

The title has been circulating since around mid-December, but until this week was believed to be the working title for Josh Boone's X-Men: The New Mutants. However, that all changed when Production Weekly released their latest issue, for the week of January 12th, which featured not the usual one, but two separate X-Men listings: one for the aforementioned New Mutants spin-off and one for the mysterious X-Men: Supernova.

Further details weren't provided and it's still up in the air even today whether or not the title is actually in reference to a new X-Men film or if it's just a mistake, but based on a recently posted second listing, it's starting to look like it might indeed be the former. The production tracking website My Entertainment World updated their site this morning with listings for the New Mutants feature film, which as expected will begin filming in late-April in Montréal, and also opened a new listing for X-Men: Supernova with a expected shoot date of mid-May 2017, also in Montreal.

Now there is talk of a working title.

X-Men: Supernova Confirmed As Dark Phoenix Movie?

Quote
Popular opinion at first suggested that X-Men: Supernova may be a production title for X-Men: The New Mutants, the upcoming X-Men franchise spinoff film. However, each subsequent appearance of the X-Men: Supernova name has made the project seem independent from X-Men: The New Mutants.

The latest update to Production Weekly not only makes the case that X-Men: Supernova is a separate film from X-Men: The New Mutants, but it also may have revealed what the next X-Men movie will be about.

Production Weekly now has X-Men: Supernova listed with the working title of “Dark Phoenix.” The existence of a working title specifically designated for X-Men: Supernova would seem to confirm that it is not a production title for X-Men: The New Mutants.

The working title of “Dark Phoenix” is a reference to “The Dark Phoenix Saga,” a classic X-Men story written by Chris Claremont and drawn by John Byrne. “The Dark Phoenix Saga” followed Jean Grey’s possession and eventual corruption by the cosmic entity called the Phoenix Force. “The Dark Phoenix Saga” took the X-Men into space and pitted them against the Imperial Guard of the Shi’ar Empire in trial by combat for Jean’s life. “The Dark Phoenix Saga” ended tragically with Grey sacrificing herself to make sure that the Dark Phoenix did not possess her again.

Count me among the unexcited if they trot Phoenix out again. "The Last Stand" was terrible, and how do you fit the whole saga into an appx 2 hour movie while still giving the real story proper play? TLS tried to shoe horn it into "well Jean has an extra personality", and that failed hard. Working in the Shi'ar and Hellfire Club etc would need a good amount of backstory just by themselves.

Agree. This is like trotting out the Joker in another Batman movie or Luthor in another Superman movie...I've seen that movie before.

I'd actually be ok with the phoenix, as long as they gave enough movie time to build it.

Next X-Men movie - whatever it is, Jean is slowly learning to use her phoenix powers throughout, and at the end of the movie has 'mastered' her powers.

Next Next X-men movie - the phoenix starts taking control and starts to alienate her from the x-men, with the end of the movie involving her betraying the x-men or possibly them betraying her

Next Next X-men movie - Full fledged dark phoenix vs x-men

feel free to involve the hellfire club at some point.

But really I'd rather they scrap it and go for R-Rated X-force.

It stretches the borders of belief to think they would re-do Dark Phoenix after they spent parts of two films doing it already. Must be something else.

Looks like the new X-Men movie is moving forward.

Sophie Turner to start filming the new X-Men film soon

Last night Sophie Turner walked the red carpet of the 2017 British Academy Film Awards, and we had the chance to catch a few updates on what the actress has got coming up. Two of the biggest franchises she’s currently involved with are about to move into uncharted territory with X-Men entering a new decade and Game of Thrones moving even further past the currently published material.

The new X-Men film is in her immediate future and there are rumours that the Jean Grey/Dark Phoenix storyline might be revisited. If the tradition is held then this new X-Men film would take place in the 90s, following on from their adventures in the 60s, 70s, and 80s.

James McAvoy Hints At An X-MEN Return This Summer, But Is It For NEW MUTANTS Or An APOCALYPSE Sequel?

X45GV7P.png

While 20th Century Fox has remained mum on the matter, it's been widely rumored for a few months now that X-Men star James McAvoy would return as Charles Xavier in Josh Boone's New Mutants, and now, we may finally have some sort of confirmation.

Yesterday, McAvoy shared a photo of himself having dinner with X-Men producer Simon Kinberg with a caption that read: "Dinner last night with the man who's in a multi-generational three-way relationship with two professors. Thanks for dinner @simondavidkinberg and @hutch.parker, I can't wait for the summer." It's uncertain whether or not he's actually referring to the upcoming New Mutants spin-off or if he's talking about the rumored X-Men: Supernova, but it's probably a pretty safe bet to say McAvoy is almost definitely filming something set in the X-Men universe at some point this summer.

Simon Kinberg Is Reportedly In Talks To Write And Direct The Next X-MEN Movie

149131.jpg

We've been hearing a lot about the next X-Men movie (currently dubbed "X-Men: Supernova") recently, but even though the project is scheduled to head into production in June, we still haven't had any kind of official announcement. Because of this, Collider's Steve Weintraub did some digging, and he may have uncovered some very interesting information.

According to his sources, Simon Kinberg - who has worked as a writer and producer on many of the previous X-flicks - is being lined up to make his directorial debut on this next film in the franchise, which is indeed expected to readapt elements of the Dark Pheonix Saga. So far, the only confirmed cast member is Sophie Turner, but Kinberg was recently photographed having dinner with James McAvoy, who is also sure to reprise the role of Charles Xavier.

Looks like 2018 will be the year of Fox-Marvel.

Deadpool 2, X-Men: Dark Phoenix, New Mutants Get Release Dates

Quote

20th Century Fox has given official release dates to three upcoming X-Men movies.

New Mutants will open on April 13, 2018. Deadpool 2 will follow on June 1, 2018. The next core X-Men movie, now confirmed to be X-Men: Dark Phoenix, will open on Nov. 2, 2018.

New Mutants is being co-written and directed by Josh Boone. The film is inspired by the very first X-Men spinoff series, The New Mutants, which followed a new class of teenage mutants attending Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters. In keeping with the tone and tradition of the comic book series, the New Mutants movie is intended to be the X-Men movies franchise's entry into the Young Adult film genre. The film is expected to begin shooting in early May, with production taking place in Montreal and Boston.

Deadpool 2 is the sequel to 2016's underdog, R-rated hit. Ryan Reynolds will return as Wade Wilson, the merc with a mouth. He'll be working with new director David Leitch. While supporting cast members from the first Deadpool movie are expected to return, Deadpool 2 will also give Wade some new playmates. Atlanta breakout Zazie Beetz will play Domino, a mutant mercenary with the gift of good luck thanks her mutant powers. Josh Brolin will play Cable, the time-travelling mutant soldier/mercenary who gets stuck playing the straight man to Deadpool's zaniness.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix will be an adaptation of "The Dark Phoenix Saga," generally regarded as the greatest X-Men story ever told. X-Men: The Last Stand previously adapted the story, but fans were generally not satisfied with the results. The X-Men movies' time travel shenanigans have provided Fox with a rare second chance to do the story justice.

Seriously?

Well over 2,000 X-Men books and they're already re-using storylines?

I know I'm late to the party but it bears repeating: The Last Stand already did Dark Phoenix. Half-assed and poorly, but c'mon...

And I thought Sony was bad for using the Green Goblin as a villain in 3 of their first 5 movies rather than go with any of a dozen other villains, like Chamelon, Mysterio, Kraven, Hobgoblin, etc.

Also...they're acting like there haven't been any great X-Men storylines in literally the last 25 years.

Take a page from Deadpool and Logan and realize there have been.

Hell, even Whedon's first two arcs on Astonishing X-Men would be a better choice -- although it'd be awkward having to explain why Colossus was dead...

+1

This seems senseless.  They need to hand it back to Marvel.

I think putting 3 Marvel films out in 1 year is going to stretch Fox too thin. They haven't even been able to put 1 film out each year till 2013 Wolverine, 2014 DoFP, then 2016 Deadpool/Apocalypse 2017 Logan. I think trying too hard to compete with Disney will be to their own detriment. They should leave more time to writing good stories rather than making a quick money grab. Just look at what happened with Apocalypse when they tried pushing 2 films in 1 year. If McAvoy is in New Mutants, I think it will be leading to the events in this one. Makes me wonder if the whole saga will be comprised on Apocalypse, New Mutants & end with Dark Phoenix, rather than starting with it.

X-Men: How Will Dark Phoenix Connect to New Mutants?

x-men-new-mutants-dark-phoenix-crossover

Quote

Three new X-Men movies were recently announced: We'll get New Mutants on April 13, 2018; Deadpool 2 will follow on June 1, 2018; and X-Men: Dark Phoenix, will open on Nov. 2, 2018.

Those release dates means that all three X-Men movies will be in production at the same time - which has led to a lot of speculation that Fox could include some big crossover connections in each film, to help tie its growing X-Men cinematic Universe closer together. There's particular fixation on New Mutants and Dark Phoenix since both films may contain some core X-Men. Characters that could easily crossover between both films. That leaves us with the question: How Will X-Men: Dark Phoenix Connect to New Mutants?

The easiest way to connect New Mutants to X-Men: Dark Phoenix would obviously be to toss in some crossover characters that appear in both films.

Josh Brolin's Cable is an obvious candidate to use as a link. Based on Marvel Comics history, Cable has been a major player in all of the X-Men films coming out in 2018:

  • He revamped the New Mutants team as their militant new leader.
  • Cable & Deadpool have been partnered up in their own comic book series.
  • Cable has been a major player in events like "Messiah War," which eventually led to a new host for The Phoenix Force, Hope Summers.

However, beyond Cable, there are several other big X-Men characters who could hop between films:

  • Professor Xavier - James McAvoy's Xavier is rumored for New Mutants, and could lead us from that film right into Dark Phoenix.
  • Jean Grey - The actual host of the Phoenix Force could be New Mutants, before becoming the center of attention in Dark Phoenix.
  • Deadpool - He's the most recognizable face in the franchise right now (since Hugh Jackman's Logan retired), so he could be used as connective thread between New Mutants and Dark Phoenix and their respective casts of younger or newcomer actors.
  • The New Mutants - Whatever happens during their film, The New Mutants could ultimately be recruited by someone like Cable to stop a threat Cable knows is coming: like The Dark Phoenix
