But from what point is he talking about.   As you wrote, Disney does not really explore and reorganize to purchase Fox Studios until late 2017 / early 2018.

The script for Dark Phoenix was started in 2016. (From Hollywood Reporter Article 11/2016)

Elsewhere, the reset button has been pressed. Sources say the flagship series will be reconfigured, with Simon Kinberg, overseer of the franchise as producer and writer, working on a new script. Singer, who directed four X-Men movies, will not be returning, according to insiders, but the script is being written with Lawrence, Fassbender and McAvoy optimistically in mind.

It's possible that since the rights to the Skrulls were ambiguous like Quicksilver, Fox wanted to flex some muscles and get their version out there as soon as possible.  Once Disney is making a serious play, they politely tell the producers to get rid of the Skrulls and do something else.

It was talked about on here back then how both companies were rushing to get the Skrulls out there. I'll let you search through the details.

But the changes to the story were occurring all the way to the end. Why did you think Victoria Alonso was so proud of her, "X-Women" self-righteous statement? Not realizing Stan Lee had plugged in powerful women right from the beginning of the run going back to 1963. She had no clue.

This was during the acquisition transition period where Disney hadn't completed the merger yet. But had executives on hand to monitor and advise any of the in-flight productions.

You'll notice a certain line from Victoria Alonso that came through in Dark Phoenix. Based on having them change the movie direction to avoid the use of Skrulls to clear the way for Captain Marvel, give you a guess who had a heavier say on female team members being more front and center.

The most annoying thing about this 'Nuke The Fridge' interview besides how obviously phony she is, is that they recorded the interview in stereo, making her voice sound booming and annoying in your right ear, while his voice is much more quiet and in the background in your left ear. doh!
