I will be opening a combo law office, art gallery, antique shop, and comic shop soon.  Some time within the next 40 years.  I'm still in the planning stages.

That's  quite the 4-hit combo, CONGRATS on the goals :)

you should also sell kebabs.

Sounds like a good idea. Especially since Blob’s deck is probably right next to his garage – I mean, office/gallery/shop.

My friend had an incredibly low lease (under $1500 a month) in a prime manhattan area (albeit on a side street, so people had to know he was there) and still went under after being in business 15 years.  true, this was in 2000 when a lot of places went under, but still.  and yes, it's not like he wasn't making money, but he couldn't live on the $100 a day he cleared after expenses.

So what is the status of your store opening?

I'm starting to spidey-sense that I was foolish to believe in the aspirations of the do-we-cheat-em-and-how LCS of the retired emporium of villainy :boo:

Yes it is actually.  But my neighborhood borders on a Pakistani neighborhood, so I would have a lot of kebab competition.

You joke, but every time I prepare a great meal, my wife seriously wants me to do these pop up dinner things where you "host" 25 or 30 people (for a fee) and serve some gourmet meal.  they're all the rage in hipsterland and the entertainment areas of my house are big enough, plus I have a big six burner oven.

with that said, I lose my mind cooking for 6 or 7 at T-G, Christmas, and Easter, so the stress of coming up with 5 or 6 different dishes, cooking them all at the same time and have them ready to serve 25 people is not my idea of fun.

"retired emporium of villainy"?  I'm a villain?  I'm just a fat lawyer who probably won't live long to realize his dream of opening a comic shop/law office/art gallery/antique shop/grilled meat paradise.

Wonder if Marvel will let you use the Blob character as your company logo?

You must have been to Tor Comics out in Suffolk County - law office in the front, comic shop in the back! I've never seen anything like it. No kebabs as far as I can remember, however...

hm

If you'd like to use my home office as a template I'd only want a small royalty payment.

No your not a Villain! A poor attempt in my part to be funny along with everyone else! I originally posted CONGRATS on the goals :) I meant that, I should be so lucky.... I'll right you a glowing review anytime!

In the past 19 years that I have been around the area, I am honestly surprised that a comic store has not attempted to open somewhere off of Bedford Avenue in Williamsburg.   Sure, rents are ridiculously high.  But one of these trust fund babies have got to have the start up and gumption to give it a go.

Reminds me of Anything Goes - liquor in the front, poker in the rear.

I would seriously consider adding porno and candy to the mix, just my 2c

Additionally, something else I would recommend: for the better books that you keep either on the wall or behind the counter, bag and board a xerox copy of the cover along with price and file it in with the available stock in the appropriate spot. My LCS keeps anything pricey behind the counter out of sight. I get that he's protecting the books, but having to ask about every book I'm interested in is tedious for everyone involved, and kills any spontaneous purchases that I might not ask about.

This may be a common idea, but I've never seen it (admittedly I don't hit many LCS's or cons)

I've seen one store that does that and one store that has glass display cases with some books clearly displayed and others just stacked, but with a list on or by the case.

The only downside is your just making people ask to fondle the merchandise, they can still jack it up once in their hands.  Maybe put out a sole copy, for people who can't take a little care and for those who browse with care to have a look before buying.

Wasn't there a rocket ship comics or something like that out there that went bust?  That is valuable space with all the artisenal hipster BBQ out there.

I actually stopped by a very promising shop this afternoon off of Metropolitan Avenue.  I will do a write up this weekend after I get a bunch of things done.

is it in the back room of a bbq place with a guitar repair shop in the front during the day?  I joke about my combo store, but I see it in my area (a different "fashionable" part of brooklyn)..the guitar repair shop/music lessons place with a bar, the bar with the flower shop in the front.  i seriously think a comic shop/bar might work except the bar with kids coming in for the comics could be an issue
