Spider-man 1 gold UPC

28 posts in this topic

It is likely that the CGC census is particularly incorrect for this issue.

Copies which were Gold with the UPC that may have been label as only Gold,

while there are also likely to be copies with a "Gold Spidey Head In The UPC Area"

which were labeled as "Gold UPC". It's unclear if the random growth of each book

in the CGC census is an indication of these mistakes/confusions.

Why would you say that? I would admit that some UPC Gold editions may have been missed (like price variants) but I doubt CGC is labelling tons of non-UPC editions as UPC in the census.

Anytime there is a lower-print edition, there is a far, far, far greater chance of it being grouped in the larger-print fold than vice versa.

For example, I have seen quite a few 30 and 35-cent variants that went unnoted on the label, but I have yet to see a standard 25-cent or 30-cent copy noted as a 30-cent or 35-cent variant, respectively.

Note that Spiderman #1 Gold (without UPC) is shown as #8 overall in the list,

but that in the particular timeframe (Late 2003) that the book was not in the Top 25

for overall 1990s submissions, the version "with UPC" was.

While it's possible that valid submissions could have caused this "switch",

it's probably an indication of at least a partial error of some sort.

(Combined with anecdotes that I've heard of these two Gold books with the wrong label.)

I can't get the link to work, and I am not familiar with the page, so could you please explain what you're trying to say?

Can anyone else get the link to work? confused-smiley-013.gif

I'm saying that when you look at the "most often submitted books" for the 1990s,

the Spiderman #1 Gold (no UPC) version has been #8 overall from 2000-2005.

The version "with UPC" is #106 overall.

If you break it down by timeframes, then you will see that "no UPC" has been

in the Top 25 of every timeframe from 2000-2005 except one... late 2003.

However, in late-2003, "with UPC" is suddenly a "Top 25 submission" (#17),

though it has not been in the Top 25 before or since.

It is likely that a labelling error occurred between "no UPC" and "with UPC" in late 2003,

or else those books suddenly switched importance in the mind of everyone

who would have submitted them, then immediately switched back.

(But back to the first point... what's wrong with the link?)

Nothing, and it works now. I've just found that when a lot of people are hammering your site, it can be tough to access. I know the site works, but that particular page was timing out for awhile.

The price of success I guess. wink.gif

Wow, good point... I hadn't thought of "multiple users" being the culprit.

If anyone finds value in this type of information:

These were created for the CGC Newsletter for June, but I think they

may not make it into an article for another month.

(Seeing how June was already a full newsletter as it was.) grin.gif

All pages include only census data as of April 2005... not the new July 2005 update.
