Treatment of unwitnessed signed comics

Listen I’m wondering why they don’t offer a better updated authenticating service . It’s not realistic for people to be there all the time at a show where some artists like for example Alex Ross never comes to Canada , why couldn’t CGC offer an authentication service ? Curious they do everything else .

This issue was very limited and signed and I like it that’s why . I also think it’s really bad when your competitor offers this service and CGC does not !

I don’t think the company will publicly lay out their rationale and math for specific business decisions.

but I think if you do some devils advocate reasoning against your own preferences, you can probably come up with decent reasons why they prefer to stick w CGC SS over getting into authentications and verifications.

you may not ultimately agree with the conclusions after examining the reasons you came up with, but you’re also not looking at the same data.

but this type of examination will probably get you in the ballpark.

Ok, I'm going to be quick because I have to get to work. For all the people looking for a work around to the CGC SS, I have a little story for you. I used to work at a comic shop called Heroland, in Worth, IL., back in the early 90's. I was 15. The owner, Lee Tennent (of Lee Tennent Enterprises, or LTE) was a huge POS who would rip off any one he could, steal from his employees, beat his wife in the back room and manipulate children into working for him for free.

Lee would hire artists and fly them out to his store to do signatures for his customers. He would set up an agreement with them to sign a certain number of books at a certain dollar amount per book. When they got there, they would do the signing and then Lee would significantly lower the amount of books he wanted signed for the store, from 500 to 50 typically. He would then cut them a check for a WAY lower price than previously agreed to. If they made a fuss, he'd agree to the original deal, and then stop payment on the check after they left.

After they left, he'd take his throng of young kids, me included, to his warehouse and have us practice forging the artist signature 100 times. Then we'd sign 5000 books and he'd slap a BS 'COA' on them. These books are still out there, on ebay, most with my signature on them. When I see them, I let the seller know that they're selling the comic book equivalent of a blood diamond.

Artists include Kurt Swan, Marty Nodell, John Romita Jr., Kevin West, Tom Morgan, among many others.

Because of this I ONLY use CGC verified signature witness service because I know I can trust it. The system works, so let it work.

Here's a pic of one of those BS COAs; stay away from them.

Hello,

The only way a comic can get our Signature Series authentication is if the book is actually signed in front of a CGC witness, employee, or through a CGC facilitator, and we immediately accept the comics for grading.  That way we know with 100% certainty that the signature is authentic.  If you don’t have a witness at the time of the book getting signed, unfortunately we would not be able to authenticate the signature.

When CGC is present at a Comic Con, we will have witnesses available at the CGC booth that will walk with you to witness a signature.  Go to the CGC booth before getting a signature and ask to have a witness escort you.

We have witnesses available at multiple Comic Cons throughout the year to help you get your books signed and witnessed properly. You can find a complete list of the comic cons we will be attending at http://www.cgccomics.com/events

We do not accept COA's as proof of signature as they are easily forged. We would recommend that you keep possession of your COA as we do not encapsulate them with your book.

Your signed comics, if graded, would get our green Qualified label with a notation of "Name written on cover in marker" with no assertion of who may have signed the comic.  By giving your comic our Qualified label, we are ignoring the signature for purposes of the grade.

Please let me know if I may assist you with anything further.

You said Your "Your signed comics, if graded, would get our green Qualified label with a notation of "Name written on cover in marker" with no assertion of who may have signed the comic.  By giving your comic our Qualified label, we are ignoring the signature for purposes of the grade." However I bought a batman c9mic that has a signature and was graded by your company but it has a yellow label (see picture) is this legitimate??

I have another comic I bought from ebay that arrived today. The seller claims that the signature is the real deal as he bought it from someone who went to the events. I was wondering since I doubt have the COA if this can be accepted as a legit signature. It is signed by Stan lee and Ron lim

I called excelsior collectibles and they said it's not there certificate so they weren't sure but they did have stan at the event in 2017 signing comics.

I don't know what to do whether it was worth getting from ebay or if I should get a refund.

You can look up the serial number on the Cgc website.  If the slab appears to be sealed, then it’s legitimate.  I suggest you go to the Cgc website and read more about what the Cgc SS program is.

Cgc does not authenticate signatures.  If that is something you’re interested it you should look elsewhere.

whether it’s worth it is up to you.

Hi,

I am disabled and am unable to get to conventions and signings. I have a few comics signed by Kevin Eastman directly from Eastman's Studio's themselves and two have a COA. Unfortunately that is the best I can do. I don't know what to do now since I can't have them yellow labeled. I wish I could have them yellow labeled when I have a chance to send in with the membership I just got. The harsh reality is that it'll be just a green label. I don't know if that's good or bad. Not great I know but not bad. I have proof that I'm legally disabled and proof that the books and their signatures came from Eastman's Studio's. With that said, I probably answered my own question. If someone could assist me further as what I should do that would be of much help. Thank you.

Jon

THere's nothing wrong with the comics you have.

If for some reason you're interested in CGC SS comics signed by Eastman, there should plenty available on ebay (or other auction sites).  OR keep an eye out for CGC SS signings by your favorite creators (including Eastman), they pop up from time to time.  In most cases you can MAIL IN the comic(s) for signatures.  YOu can probably get on some kind of CGC mailing list or keep checking their website or social media.

You could also check out out the Signature Room subforum here on the boards for more discussion of signatures generally.

Good luck.

I do think there's some chance for an exception with this, you can inquire with CGC further if ALL OF THE FOLLOWING ARE TRUE:

If you happen to be Rob Liefeld, and you can sign some type of affidavit (CGC might have forms) that this comic has somehow been in your personal possession since you signed the comic, meaning you (Rob Liefeld) physically followed it through the process where it was sealed in a bag.  And then you, Rob Liefeld have had this comic physically in your possession for thirty years.  And then you, Rob Liefeld, mail in this comic to CGC yourself.  If all of those things are true, there may a chance and you should check with CGC (but even then I think the chance is very small, but not zero IMO).

But basically ask yourself, "did a CGC authorized witness physically witness the signing?"  If no then no.  (yes I realize there are some unfortunate exceptions, but this kind of thing isn't them).

California enacted a law (Civil Code 1739.7) that requires certain disclosures in the event of selling autographed memorabilia.  Will CGC comply with those requirements when I want to sell my CGC SS comics?  I didn't get the required "warranty" when I bought any of my SS comics.

In section 3c it does not consider signed books under to be under the requirement?

This probably warrants it’s own question thread to cgc

Hi Jon, I'd suggest you submit to a grading company that doesn't have to witness signatures.

Check the back of the label.

It does not note who the witness is.  It is not in 10 point font.  There are probably other problems, but I think the California law is stupid and I don't want to read through it again.

Yes, signed Books (paper with words and no pictures).  California bookstores put up a petition to rescind these ridiculous rules when they first became active.  They were able to have "Books" exempted from the signature requirements.  However, it is still unclear where a comic book falls in their definitions.  Is a comic book "entertainment memorabilia"?

This law began as strictly applicable to sports memorabilia, but in the last five years was expanded to cover other signed items that sell for more than $50.
