Warner Bros. Plotting Live-Action 'Nightwing' Movie With 'Lego Batman Movie' Director (Exclusive)

Quote

Warner Bros. is plotting a new DC superhero film based on the Batman-centric character Nightwing.

Chris McKay, who most recently directed The Lego Batman Movie for Warner Bros., is in negotiations to helm the new film, and Bill Dubuque (The Accountant) is writing the ---script.

Nightwing, aka Grayson, is perhaps best known for being the original Robin. Grayson was the youngest member of a family of acrobats known as the Flying Graysons. He was created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger and illustrator Jerry Robinson, and first introduced in Detective Comics No. 38 in April 1940. After his parents were murdered, he was taken in as the legal ward of Bruce Wayne/Batman. He then became Robin and teamed up with the Dark Knight on many an adventure to fight crime in the city of Gotham.

Why 'Nightwing' Might Signal a Change in Direction for DC's Cinematic Universe

Quote

In many ways, that last element was the beginning of the end for Grayson, boy wonder. Although his stayed in the Robin role through 1984 — he quit in New Teen Titans No. 39 — he had become increasingly estranged from Batman throughout the 1960s and '70s. On a narrative level, it made sense — he was growing older, had his own friends (Teen Titans, with Robin in the leadership role alongside fellow sidekicks Kid Flash, Wonder Girl, Speedy and Aqualad, launched in 1964's The Brave and The Bold No. 54) and had already ditched the "Boy Wonder" tagline in favor of the more awkward "Teen Wonder."

All of these experiences didn't just prepare him to go it alone as "Nightwing" (He took on that identity in 1984's Tales of the Teen Titans No. 44), they also ensured that he would be a more carefree, fun-loving crimefighter than his former mentor. His early childhood in the circus might have left him with both acrobatic skills and an understanding of the value of teamwork, but it was growing up surrounded by other superheroes — and surviving attacks by all kinds of supervillains — that ensured that Grayson would be someone that understood his life was at once both ridiculous and, on occasion, extremely dangerous, making him all the more appreciative of those around him.

Today, Grayson belongs at the center of a social circle that includes the "Bat-family" — Batman and various associates — as well as Superman, the no-longer-teen Titans and the spy organization known as Spyral. He has a "best frenemy" in the form of Midnighter, star of DC's Midnighter and Apollo series, and he remains someone others look to to put things in perspective. He is, in many ways, a superhero who sees his job as fun… which might put him at odds with the rest of DC's cinematic universe, as it currently stands.

In pure story terms, there is space for Nightwing to exist — while Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad teased a dead Robin, it wasn't definitively stated that this was Grayson, and Ben Affleck playing an older Batman allows for a former Robin to have grown into an adult himself. Tonally, however, it'll be interesting to see if Nightwing breaks from what's gone before cinematically and stays true to its comic book roots, or vice versa.

It is about time that Nightwing showed up in the DCEU. With this news,  I would imagine/hope that Batgirl will be arriving sometime soon as well.

Personally, I think it would be great to see WB weave the Death in the Family storyline in at some point after the teaser in BvS. That would open the door to eventually bringing Jason Todd back as Red Hood, and it would combine two of the Batman story arcs in one or two films (Death in the Family and Under the Hood).

Looks like the Nolan trilogy still dominates hearts and minds.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt Tops Fan Poll to Play DCEU Nightwing

aD9pY3q.jpg

In a recent slew of big Batman movie news, we learned that Nightwing will soon be an official character in the DC Extended Universe, and that he's getting his own solo film, which will be directed by The LEGO Batman Movie's Chris McKay. Like so many other fans, the first thing our minds went to was the question of 'who could play Nightwing in the DCEU?' And rather than just pitch our own theories, we invited YOU, the readers, to share your input - and share you did!

As you can see in the polling above, The Dark Knight Rises star Joseph Gordon-Levitt topped the fan poll for DCEU Nightwing by a considerable margin. It's not really a surprise: ever since The Dark Knight Trilogy ended, whenever there has been a Batman character announced for the DCEU, we see a passionate swell of Nolanverse fans, trying to import that world over to the DCEU in some way.

Nightwing Movie Will Have ‘Real’ Martial Arts

Nightwing-Comic-Book-Cover-Mask.jpg?auto

Quote

When pressed on the depths of his love for the character of Grayson – after stating a Nightwing tattoo was in his future – McKay sent a series of Tweets outlining what makes the former sidekick’s story so special. His appraisal drives home the reasons he sees Nightwing as a “fascinating” DC hero, but also offers some context for the standard McKay is setting for his own movie. And, perhaps more importantly, what conventions he may try to avoid:

“The story of Grayson, becoming Robin, then becoming Nightwing played out for us, the audience, in the comics in REAL TIME. It wasn’t a flashback. We experienced it. So all of Robin/Nightwing’s successes and failures we were along for the ride. And people that underestimated Robin or dismissed him perhaps had their opinions changed as we watched him “grow up” right in front of us. His relationships, his conflicts with Batman et al felt real to me because he was the window character with which we experienced Gotham City.”

With the direction of Matt Reeves’s Batman movie still unknown, it’s possible that audiences’ first expansive look at the Gotham of the DCEU will come in Nightwing (assuming Grayson still calls the port home). Fans may also wonder whether McKay’s comments rule out the flashbacks expected in future DCEU movies. Regardless of how the film pays service or explanation of Grayson’s time as Batman’s sidekick, fans can assume Nightwing won’t follow the typical Batman style. When one follower responded that they considered Nightwing to be a showcase for Superman AND Batman’s best qualities, McKay responded with a simple “Agreed.”

I like the reason why this movie was not called out on the 'active' list at SDCC.

NIGHTWING Director Chris McKay Reveals Why The Film Did Not Appear In The DCEU Slate At Comic-Con

Quote

When Warner Bros. took over Hall H at this year's San Diego Comic-Con, fans were treated with new logos for the DC Extended Universe's upcoming slate of films, albeit without any release dates attached. Of course, fans quickly noticed that several previously announced films were missing from the slate, one of them being Chris McKay's Nightwing, and according to Mckay, there's a reason why the film wasn't mentioned.

Replying to a fan question on Twitter regarding Nightwing, McKay revealed why the film was not part of the Warner Bros. Hall H presentation.

Chris McKay Describes 'Nightwing' As A "Badass Action Movie"

Quote

The Nightwing movie has been one of the larger question marks of the DCEU, but now it seems audiences are in for an action packed ride.

At least that's the impression given by Nightwing director Chris McKay, who is currently helming LEGO Ninjago before he dives in on Bludhaven's protector. In fact, casting hasn't even started yet, but he did clear some things up when it comes to what fans can expect to be entertained with.

“It’s gonna be a f****** badass action movie with a lot of heart and emotion," McKay told Collider. "It’s gonna be a crazy, fun ride. Whoever gets cast as Nightwing, and any of the other actors around, are gonna go through a f****** boot camp experience because it’s gonna be a lot."

Following the more grounded character is a dedication to realistic stunts and effects, something McKay feels equally as strongly about.

"I’m not gonna do a lot of CG," McKay said. "It’s gonna be all real s***. It’s gonna be real stuntwork, and they’re gonna need to do all of the stuff on camera and do it credibly. For the cast and the crew, it’s gonna be a visceral experience, and for the audience. It’s not gonna be like a lot of these movies where there’s a lot of CG and flying, and things like that. Everything he does is gonna have to be real."

Stranger Things' Dacre Montgomery Fuels Speculation With Nightwing Tweet

Power Rangers and Stranger Things star Dacre Montgomery has fans questioning if the actor is up for the role of Batman protégé Grayson aka Nightwing in Warner Brothers' DC Cinematic Universe.

Montgomery posted a picture of Nightwing — without a caption — to his Twitter and Instagram accounts late Saturday night. Both posts have since been deleted. Montgomery's tweet received hundreds of retweets and more than a thousand likes before it was removed.

McKay took to Twitter in late September to announce the role has yet to be cast. "We are taking our time," McKay wrote. "We are going to cast a wide net because we need to find the perfect person. We need to get the -script right. We need this movie to blow your mind."

Turns out Montgomery may have been fishing for a role, as casting hasn't even started just yet.

NIGHTWING Director Confirms That Warner Bros. Hasn't Started Looking For Grayson...Yet

Over the weekend, Stranger Things 2 star Dacre Montgomery got speculation swirling when he Tweeted and deleted an image of Nightwing. Many fans have assumed that he could be in talks for the role and that, as with Shazam, we'll hear something official shortly. Unfortunately, The LEGO Batman Movie and Nightwing director Chris McKay has confirmed that the casting process hasn't begun...yet.

As you can see below, McKay has confirmed that the hunt for Grayson will be a big one and it seems we shouldn't necessarily pin our hopes on Warner Bros. choosing a big name actor because there may even be an open casting call giving unknowns the chance to suit up as the superhero.

The Internet Really Wants Dev Patel To be Nightwing

Quote

Earlier this year, the world learned Warner Bros. and DC Films were teaming up for yet another superhero venture. Nightwing will be getting a solo film of his own, and fans know exactly who should play the hero. If you ask Twitter, then Dev Patel is the man Hollywood should be eyeing.

If you look through social media, Patel’s face has been photo-shopped onto dozens of Nightwing sketches. Grayson has got a legion of supporters ready to bolster him in the box office, but DC Films has a burden to carry when it comes to casting. Dev Patel is a fan-favorite at the moment along with other actors like Dacre Montgomery, and as you can see below, Patel suits the Nightwing suit.

So far, there is no update on Nightwing’s casting, but Chris McKay has told fans he will keep them informed once the process begins. The director took to Twitter earlier this month to tell fans how Nightwing’ was going behind-the-scenes, and you can read his comments below:

“We haven’t started the process of casting Nightwing’ yet but when we do you’ll hear something because our search will be far and wide,” McKay wrote.

Is 'Nightwing' Going To Film In Detroit?

LFim0Cp.png

Quote

Fans have plenty of unanswered questions surrounding DC's Nightwing solo movie, but we might have just gotten a hint at where it could film.

Chris McKay, who is attached to direct the upcoming Warner Bros. picture, recently hinted that he hopes to shoot in the city of Detroit, Michigan "soon". This has led many fans to believe that Detroit could be where principal photography ultimately takes place for Nightwing.

Choosing Detroit as a shooting location for Nightwing would make sense, depending on what story McKay would want to tell within his "badazz action movie". The city would certainly make a good stand-in for either Gotham or Bludhaven, the two locations most regularly associated with Grayson in the comics.

As of right now, there are no official updates on Nightwing, with the film not even making it onto DC Films' San Diego Comic-Con slate. But McKay has remained optimistic that the film could begin shooting sometime in 2018, provided that the -script is right.

NIGHTWING Director Teases Impending Casting Announcement And Possible Shooting Location

CJBHtdB.png

Quote

In the past, Nightwing director Chris McKay has promised a badass action movie which is light on CGI, a deep dive into Grayson's origin story, and action unlike anything that's ever been seen in a superhero movie before. Well, as you can see in the Tweets below, The LEGO Batman Movie helmer has revealed that we should probably start hearing some concrete details about casting in February.

McKay also seemed to hint at the possibility of Nightwing shooting in Detroit, the same city Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice used as a substitute for Gotham City (chances are it would double as Bludhaven this time around, though). Warner Bros. has yet to officially announce this movie but it appears as if that could be about to change if the director's comments here are any sort of indication.

Dylan O'Brien's 'Maze Runner' Co-Star Thinks He Should Play Nightwing

dylan-obrien-maze-runner-death-cure-nigh

Quote

Maze Runner: The Death Cure actor Dexter Darden, who plays apocalypse survivor Frypan for the third time, says Maze Runner leading man Dylan O'Brien should play Batman's former protégé Grayson, a.k.a. the fly-solo Nightwing.

"He would be so good," Darden told CinemaBlend.

"So what happens is, Batman ages out unfortunately, in Gotham, and Robin just kind of grows up and just has the same resources, but a little bit more of a badass kind of edge to him," Darden explained of the sidekick-turned-superhero, who left Gotham and the Robin identity behind in favor of taking up a role as the protector of nearby city Blüdhaven.

"Nightwing is essentially a 25- to like 30-year-old Robin, and he's got this sick blue one-piece outfit. Blue, black, and he's dope," Darden said.

The now 26-year-old O'Brien was considered for the second Spider-Man reboot back in 2015, after Sony walked away from the Amazing Spider-Man franchise in favor of a partnership bringing the teenage superhero into the shared Marvel Cinematic Universe. Tom Holland ultimately won the role.

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle star Nick Jonas, who has been named by fans as a candidate for the Nightwing role, told ComicBook.com he's "down" to play Nightwing, saying it would be "awesome" to play one of Batman's most trusted allies.

"I'd be super down for this," Jonas said.

"I didn't know there was people vying for me to play this role but keep the chatter alive, people! If you vote for me, maybe they'll cast me in it! And then, I don't know, I'll thank you all later."
