You really like Gunsmoke Western #58! Is there any particular reason for collecting so many? Have you got any higher grade ones?

High grade? No, they're all gloriously crappy copies. It started with the L Miller Indicia nonsense and went on from there. Got some good news on the L Miller front coming soon actually. There's going to be charts and everything.

I can actually feel the boards trembling with excitement and keen anticipation.

I await enlightenment. (worship)

I was going through one of my ASM boxes this afternoon and found a few more old, pence Spideys. Can't believe I forgot about them, the #40 especially would have fitted right in with the fire & water (albeit not Ditko) theme.

Hello.

I thought I'd resurrect this subject, albeit in a new thread. New boards, new thread. And besides, my previous thread title was a bit of a mouthful.

Currently, I have documented 2,992 Marvel comics with pence only printed prices published between the dates of:

  • May 1960 - the date of the first known single 9d price printed comics (e.g. Gunsmoke Western #58, JIM #58, Strange Tales #75)
  • December 1981 – the last month before consistent dual pence/cents pricing commenced (a nice easy tie off, effectively ending the existence of pence only priced variants).

They are documented on a spreadsheet that looks like this......

inv.thumb.PNG.a5bff5446c9ba5fa0ee3f67f405e390c.PNG

.....and I have scans / images of every comic saved in folders like this:

pic.thumb.PNG.0c66b224c62c005596d87345a0a0b604.PNG

If you are interested in pence variants, here are some observations:

  1. The first Pence only printed Marvel comics found are Gunsmoke Western #58 and Journey Into Mystery #58 cover dated May 1960. No Pence printed issues dated prior to May 1960 have been found
  2. The last Pence only printed Marvel comics are cover dated December 1981. From January 1982, Marvel introduced dual Cents / Pence pricing for all their Direct Editions (Newsstand Editions remained Cents only priced)
  3. No Pence copies have been found for comics cover dated December 1964 to July 1965 inclusive. Most monthly titles have a 9 or 10 issue gap around these dates
  4. Almost every title which crosses the cover dates of October 1966 to December 1966 has a two issue Pence gap. This may explain why ASM Completists haven’t found #42 and #43 yet. They probably don’t exist. Ditto Avengers 33/34, Daredevil 21/22, Fantastic Four 56/57, Sgt Fury 35/36, Tales To Astonish 85/86. However, Strange Tales only misses one issue (#151) as does Tales of Suspense (#84). Two-Gun Kid has all issues as Pence copy but as a bi-monthly title you can see there may have been a missing issue had it been monthly
  5. No Pence copies have been found for comics cover dated December 1967 to March 1969 inclusive – 16 issue gap
  6. No Pence copies have been found for comics cover dated April 1974 to July 1974 inclusive. This 4 issue gap coincides with the transition from 6p to 7p
  7. No Pence copies have been found for comics cover dated February 1981 to March 1981 inclusive. This 2 issue gap coincides with the transition from 15p to 20p
  8. Many single issues do not appear to exist when the issue was double sized, e.g. Avengers #200, Astonishing Tales #8, Ghost Rider #50, The Invaders #41, Thor #300, X-Men #137
  9. No Pence copies have been found for the ‘Giant Size’ titles of 1974 and 1975
  10. Only 5 annuals have been found as Pence only printed copies, all cover dated 1965 (Amazing Spider-Man #2, Fantastic Four #3, Journey Into Mystery #1, Marvel Tales #2, Sgt Fury #1)

Whilst I am fairly confident that I know what exists for the majority of the 200 titles which cross the applicable dates, there are some titles - especially the early ones - which have gaps where a pence version may exist.

Here is a list of some of the titles and issue numbers which may yet turn out to have a pence version:

58c27d4c147cb_PenceMissing.PNG.62807a5bc8b906c28d32e77868fc184b.PNG

If anyone reading has a pence version of one of these, do let me know - I'll update this thread if and when I find any new ones, or if anyone wants to talk pence related stuff.

I'll end with a scan of a recent addition

Cheers!

Hello.

What a great quest you are on.

Is it possible to access those charts and photos?

I am currently trying to put together a graded collection of pence copies of (Uncanny) X-Men from 141 downwards (142 and 143 being ND as you know) as far as I can afford.

I have 141 (9.0), 140 (9.4), 139 (9,0), 138 (9.0), (137 ND), 136 (9.0), 135 (9.4), 134 (9.0), 133 (9.2), (132 Missing), 131 (8.5), 130 (9.6) , (129 Missing) ,128 (8.0) ,127 (9.2) ,126 (9.4), 125 (8.0), 124 (8.0), 123 (9.4),  (121 and 122 ND), 120 (9.2), 119 (9.6), 118 (9.6), 117 (9.4), 116.(9.6), 115 (9,4), 114 (9.0), 113 (9.2), 112 (9.4) (111 Missing) 110 (9.4) and 99 (8.0) and 64 (7.5).

The search continues for the inbetweens ( whichever they may be).

Regards.

Here are my graded pence copies.

Does anyone have the same trouble with their scanner that I have? Sometimes it scans the slab as a whole, missing off the bottom, and sometimes it scan as two separate items the comic cover and the grade label. I have tried moving the slabs up, down and sideways but to no avail, the scanner does what it wants.

You might want to delete/edit your post to where the other company label is not showing fyi cause it is frowned upon :shy:

Thanks for the advice. I'm new here and any advice is welcome.

I did not know this was not allowed, over at the other board CGC pics ARE allowed.

I wouldn't even begin to know how to delete the photos. I'm an oldie and not too tech savvy.

It took me ages with trial and error to figure out how to post them in the first place.

Cheers Adamantium.

PS. Could the mods guide me here? Thanks.

Since it is your post, if you go to the bottom of your post you'll see a word/link that says edit, click on that then you can edit your post there, or you can go to options/word/link and choose to hide the post which will make it unviewableable and give a reason why you want to hide it....

Your not really upsetting anybody..... you don't have to depart :) to answer your question, YES the MOD's will take care of it.....!

but now you know :shy: it can be forgiven, there is an ASK CGC forum here on the boards to guide you in learning "rules" etc. We all had to begin at some point or another :)

Nice Pence copies by the way!

Thank you.

UK news-stand variants are incredibly difficult to find in high grade. As well as the usual distributor/wholesale/retail handling they also had to survive a four to six weeks sea journey from the US.

Awesome!!! the one that started this thread Marwood and I lives outside the USA and has been documenting the pence journeys for quite a while. I find them interesting :) I haven't acquired any, seems they're that rare even here in the US. I might have seen a couple at comic-con's, but wouldn't have known what they were at the time. Nice that you found most of the "Dark Phoenix Saga"! I owned those recently and got them all signed by Chris Claremont, but that was before I was familiar with CGC so I didn't have them graded. Claremont is a real nice guy and I believe a quality writer. I went to my LCS yesterday and they had pg 21 of the Original Art from Uncanny Xmen 142! So there is a resurgence etc. of desire for some high grade uniqueness with issue number's around the Dark Phoenix Saga. I had originally bought them to read lol having grown up with the X-men cartoons, I wanted to see how close to the original story they were :)

Hello @Redshade, sorry I haven't responded sooner.  I have a family illness to deal with and will likely be away from the boards for some time after this post. But I didn't want to leave you unattended as pence collectors are few and far between and must be encouraged.

According to my research there are 107 X-Men pence printed variants from a possible 152 issues as follows:

xm.PNG.4c395a7ca9bdf34ca637abad62141f90.PNG

  • 1 - 7 priced 9d
  • 13 - 24 priced 10d
  • 27 - 37 priced 10d
  • 55 - 66 priced 1/-
  • 73 - 86 priced 6p
  • 89 - 90 priced 7p
  • 91 - 93 priced 8p
  • 96 - 98 priced 9p
  • 99 - 101 priced 10p
  • 108 - 120 priced 12p
  • 123 - 133 priced 12p
  • 134 - 136 priced 15p
  • 138 - 141 priced 15p
  • 144 - 152 priced 20p

All the issue 'gaps' are in line with other titles and relate to shipping strikes, printer changes and double sized issues (e.g. 137 is double sized hence no pence copy).

I note you are missing 111, 129 and 132 - they definitely exist:

111.jpg.d3ad77e452620a100c88443deef0018a.jpg129.thumb.jpg.01cc260753976930937daab4c96b920b.jpg132.thumb.jpg.f6c713c2093666b00eb18adb75b171f6.jpg

Good luck with the hunt and I hope this list helps you. As Adamantium said, don't take it personally if your post is taken down by the mods. CGC see images of competitors products as free advertising and do tend to remove them when they spot them. It is in no way a reflection on you as a new member, so do stick around. When I get through my personal stuff we can debate pence books further.

Great looking comics. I am in awe of those X-Men. Did you buy them raw and have them slabbed or did you buy them already encapsulated? All my X-Men comics were bought as raw ( at Leeds comic mart in the 90s) and sent off for grading just recently. High grade pence are very difficult to find. As to buying online well I have sometimes bought up to four "NM" copies of an issue just to get one that was VF. (Where's that wry smile emoticon when you need it)?

I got the comics raw  and then have them slabbed, it took me years to get them in high grade and on line it getting very hard to find pence copy in high grade. I love collecting pence copy . Cool collection you have(X-men) :)

Hello everyone. I am a major collector of all international editions and foreign price variants of American comics. The information on this thread is really fantastic. Thank you for sharing.

This is slightly off topic, so I apologize in advance. I was thinking if anyone was interested or had further knowledge, it would be you guys. I recently found these two books with price stamps from Kenya that appear to be official import stamps, as oppose to second hand store stamps. The 2 different stamps have different prices, so I assume they were importing to Kenya for a few years. Has anyone ever seen one of these or have any information? I can't find any info anywhere on the web. Thank you.

Thank you.
