That Spidey 28 & Spidey 50 are outstanding!

Yep. A few looked very nice from the front but had some tanning inside the covers. This cents ASM #3 went for £5,000 before the 23% fee:

They'll do well with that slabbed if is NM

A quick addition to this summary, posted previously:

Capture.PNG.bcc27cd21699eda0b755e16fc791c6d0.PNG

I've added that some of the later 20p issues are missing their cover months - an example below, courtesy of ROM #22:

2094606932_rom21crop.jpg.83773927b7dea86e0fc5b704d5ac5224.jpg  1559280954_rom22datemissingcrop.jpg.7a3d8d2062c7ea526f2fbb662a3e01e0.jpg  rom22uscrop.jpg.4245fa52fd4808b200903b4e02d0d3d3.jpg

There are quite a few like it and I'll list them all another time :)

I did a full review of all the April 1981 onward 20p issues and found that every copy for every title is missing it's cover month from September 1981 inclusive. Here's an extract of the summary sheet:

1513426416_29_01.19Sheet.thumb.PNG.8080aadfac075a7b826e4cc9d30e9839.PNG

So the last four months were cover month free. There are 234 known 20p (30p/40p) copies within the time frame across 31 titles - the last 105 copies have no cover month.

Here's the updated 'key dates' summary:

Morning :)

Here's another of those little bits of information that interest few and trouble less. Those in the know of the know all knowing knowledge know that Marvel indicias were placed on the inside covers up to and including November 1966. They also know that from December 1966, the indicia moved to the splash page.

But those in the full knowing of the complete know all knowing knowledge know that this switch coincided with a more or less across the board two issue pence gap. Here's some pretty pictures:

Pence Gap
sheet.thumb.PNG.82d157fa06003930e31e478b965d7ae9.PNG

So, could these two events be connected?

hm

No. Probably not. And yes, I know I could have chosen two copies that are Nov/Dec dated, but the Kid was handy, alright?

Here's Dragoom! the flaming intruder.

He's a 9d copy and all that. Bit tatty but he smells lovely.

2048347669_ST76.thumb.jpg.82c3ba6a373ea07e4ad32e3aa9134807.jpg

Not sure how I'm supposed to learn the hair-raising truth though, being of less than hirsute bonce? Still, he helps with the indicia research. Did I mention that before?

He's burnt the wall down and everything hasn't he. Flaming intruders. Get on your thruppenies don't they :eyeroll:

Dragoom!

I quite like saying that out loud. Try it.

Was there a rhyme or reason to why some books did not have "Marvel All Colour Comics" in the banner but still retained the "Marvel Comics Group" banner?  FF 233 for sure keeps that.  Wasn't sure if it was just a money saver or the printers got lazy and didn't swap out the plates.

On a side note, I've been having a blast picking up some pence copies of issues that are on my list.  Condition is always key, but VF or better, and I have no problem buying pence copies, especially because I can get them a little cheaper than the cents copies.  I have a few on their way from across the pond.  I'll post pics after they arrive.  I absolutely love this thread.  The information has been amazing and so well researched.

This is some amazing info on pence. I've never understood collectors poo poo'ing pence copies as if they're the same as an Italian black and white reprint made years later or something. I'm happy to have a pence ASM 3 and Avengers 3.

Thanks Serling, I agree. Cool books those 9d three's :)

The 'Marvel All-Colour Comics' banner arrived from August 1974, as I understand it, to let the reader know just that - that the content of the comic was in colour, unlike the UK reprints / comics of the time which tended to be black and white or single colour. It lasted up to and including August 1980, then disappeared:

kmd.PNG.ca82836e3a295052ff061418ffb0f4c8.PNG

It was introduced at the same time as the price was increased to 7p, after a four to five month lay off where there were no pence copies - see FF example below:

ff1.PNG.8c9c8e6a3aed7c7471e0c7fc2c3c3343.PNG

I like the revised banners as not only did they further differentiate the UK from the US copies, making them even more 'varianty' (is that a word? It is now) they were often fairly crudely administered. Here's the first FF with the yellow bleeding nicely into the price box:

149.jpg.35677e609bda692c1128a2ee295db9e1.jpg

Your FF #233 is dated after the August 1980 date so rightly shows the US banner

As it goes, I believe from September 1980, all Marvels had the 'win $2,500' blurb as the banner. Take the Avengers here:

Final 'All-Colour Comics' banner:
198.jpg.e35386b12623853b4aefba32263ecf12.jpg

'$2,500 advert' banner:
199.jpg.7ba28017047a58dbc5574eba28ae7e1a.jpg

Return of the standard 'Marvel Comics Group' banner:
201.jpg.9b76e609181f4b973f2031ebe3434fae.jpg

There was no Avengers #200 pence copy by the way.

I often wondered why they didn't continue the UK banner for those 'advert' issues, as the competition wasn't applicable to UK readers. But I suppose the blurb area was too big and they had nothing adequate to fill it with.

But look again, and you'll see they did actually retain the 'All-Colour' wording at the top right:

199.jpg.07fb69bc6ee588110ccdc25ac54f679b.jpg  199us.jpg.08428af1a134f04f756cd30d1376cffd.jpg

So I need to change my chart to show that October 1980 is the date for the final appearance of 'Marvel All-Colour Comics', not August doh!

250.thumb.jpg.7d82b43a5a237148645c05cb8f2f9124.jpg

Iron Man's October 1980 is a 'MCG' banner, Caps is still a UK 'MACC'

So, we're learning on the job this morning. I love it  :headbang:

Subject to a full review, the correct statement is now that the UK variant 'Marvel All-Colour Comics' banner saw it's final appearances on books dated either September or October 1980 depending on the title:

It turns out that Captain America #250 is the only October 1980 dated pence comic with a 'Marvel All-Colour Comics' UK variant banner. Every other applicable title has September 1980 as their final MACC cover date:

686389651_kmdmacc.thumb.PNG.b4f3a9ceff6b310cdfca9a051ed7258d.PNG

So Cap is special :)

Accordingly, the chart now reads:

Thanks to @mec3437 for identifying the flaw in my research :headbang:

Now, I like a pence copy and I like a printing error. But a pence copy with a printing error? Now you're talking

Behold Gunsmoke Western #72, minus half it's ink :headbang:

48297244_GW729dPrintingError.thumb.jpg.d9216b763f61323ac72ce04c4a51d74c.jpg

Here he is next to his fully laden cousin:

And here's a close up of the Kid:

2136162294_GW729dPrintingError(2).jpg.c63d63178b911563dc4295f8183891f2.jpg  1116974732_GW729dPrintingError(2)b.jpg.58a8d59de3814d9db4e20717bf62324e.jpg

We know it's not a sun faded copy because:

A) Red goes first

B) The back cover has the same lack of dark tones

499976780_GW729dPrintingErrorb.thumb.jpg.5442322782cc6433f764637ce6621005.jpg

So unless the previous owner covered all the red bits, stuck it in a window, and then did the back as well, it's a genuine printing error.

Dark inside of course:
