No offence Miss Brittany but

"From"? They are FROM the US!

Come on Stephen - this is a great result. We should be celebrating! Let's not quibble over a post in a thread my friend :foryou:

Ok I admit that my post sounded more churlish than was intended but I nearly spluttered tea all over my keyboard when I saw that.

The whole point of this discussion is to establish that they are NOT UK etc comics. Oh well, apologies to Miss Brittany.

They know exactly what the score is Stephen, trust me. I'm sure all will be clear when the website is updated. This is just an initial communication from CGC in recognition of where the change originated from (this thread!). Let's rejoice as our books will now get correctly labelled!

Applause to @Brittany M. and the CGC team for your great decision to begin labeling the three categories of Type 1A's with "Price Variant" labels going forward!  Applause to @Get Marwood & I for your successful efforts communicating with CGC on the matter, you are a true super-star in this niche of the hobby!  This is a milestone moment for Type 1A variants; under the prior CGC labeling notation these US-published price variants were too often confused and conflated with the foreign-published later-reprints (by being given the same
[Country] Edition name on their labels as those reprints).

The new "Price Variant" labeling for Type 1A's going forward will distinguish them from the foreign-published editions in their labeling, which will surely advance collector awareness that Type 1A's by contrast are in fact true US-published 1st print originals from the original publisher manufactured at the same time with the same equipment (same ink, same paper) as their US-cover-priced counter-parts, then distributed in a foreign market with a different cover price (a way-different situation from being an edition published in a foreign country at a later time by a different publisher, and thus deserving of a different labeling treatment).

As an avid collector of these price variants I am thrilled to learn of this new labeling news!  The "first impression" a new/unfamiliar collector gets from seeing the CGC label can be a big deal as to whether they investigate the comic further or not; and now, with the go-forward Price Variant labeling, more collectors are sure to want to learn more.  Another round of applause, and great thanks, for making this important change happen.

Best,

- Ben

Great work ! Its time that the old reputation of these books, not being as good than US copies, changes! These books should be worth multiples of the regular US editions!  Marwood & I, Kudos!, you also have so much knowledge and have been so helpful in explaining these great collectibles, Thank-you !

I see the the Key issues associated with Pence copies, I now know  that these books could have actually been run first ,before US copies on the same print runs in the US.  Then I look at the Star wars 35 cent variant and other price variants and wait! Its coming.

I just have to chime in. I find it curious that this thread was started in 2017. And judging by the first post, this has been a topic that has been around for quite some time. Yet, when CGC finally decides to put price variants on the label, everyone is saying that CGC is finally listening. I can't help but wonder if CGC would have done this if Voldey hadn't already started doing it in the fall of 2018. My initial thought is that people would still be asking for it. Say what you want, but I'm glad that there is some competent competition out there. I think it has made CGC a better company all around. Just an observation.

Key word "could" Paul!  We may never know on that. But the more we talk about it, and the more official recognition the books get, the greater our understanding can collectively improve. I'm just glad that we're closer to a fairer description / technical parity. Thanks for the kind words :)

In the case of pence variants, the books themselves have been around for nearly 60 years! Whether it has taken 58 or 59 of them for the grading companies to catch up, I'm not too fussed. The fact that they are correctly labelling them now is the good news.

Is that because the #18 doesn't exist or that one has yet to be found. I must admit that I've been looking all over the 'net just now and cannot find one. I started to go through this post again looking for the AS-M pence lists but got sidetracked.

Here's something you don't see often - a book published by Marvel U.K. that's not for sale in the U.K. hm

Morning :)

If you've been paying attention you'll know that Journey into Mystery #64 and 65 appeared recently as 9d pence priced copies after many long years of being presumed (by me) as missing:

64.thumb.jpg.382dbde38027e3825433add107ff8d27.jpg 65.thumb.jpg.649e86bf3e830d6e384089a55049c6fa.jpg

Aint they lovely :cloud9:

Consequently, the JIM chart now looks like this:

61.PNG.90709ee6ca1c8a1ac47b0fdc2223c370.PNG

So what are the chances that a JIM #61 will eventually surface as a pence copy, now that the long held 64/65 conceptions have been turned on their head?

It took many long years of research to arrive at the current figure of 3,019 confirmed pence copies. During those years the 'patterns' would start to sink in - 61, 64 and 65 were always missing whenever someone listed a batch of JIMs on eBay. But now 64 and 65 have broken that long perceived pattern. Funnily enough, and in true buses coming along together fashion, a UK based eBay seller has recently listed a batch of JIM's and 64 and 65 are present. But 61 isn't:

209960032_JIMeBay06_05.19-606263646566(no61).thumb.PNG.fe6d68d87c3272831c4895a298ed6ce2.PNG

A seller listing #60, 62, 63, 64, 65 and 66 at the same time, all in 9d (great prices by the way) fits the pattern - no #61.

Also, and linking in to my US Price Font Research, #61 is always a bold white 10c font on a coloured background. Every copy you see will be in that format whether UK or US seller:

jim61.thumb.PNG.14ea4d7f11c16b3a5c5cc00c7f7e8a56.PNG

#60, 62, 63, 64, 65 and 66 all have 9d in white price box copies. Most of the 10c copies of them also have 10c in white boxes against the cover colour background.

So there is a body of circumstantial evidence to support the theory that #61 was not produced as a pence copy. It has no US price font variations, has never been seen (by me) in ten years of looking, and is always absent from group listings (of which I've seen a few). So maybe that one will never surface?

One reason for this post is that I find that stating a position often leads to that position being corrected five minutes later. #64 and 65 took ten years to appear to correct my assumptions. Let's hope #61 doesn't take that long, if indeed it does exist :)

"MANKIND IS DOOMED!! GOMDULLA WALKS AGAIN!!!"

"Yeah, but he hasn't got a pence copy has he? Not so impressive NOW Barry, is he!"

"Oh, right. Yeah, I suppose not"

I picked up a copy of issue #130 of the UK reprint title, Spider-Man Comics Weekly recently, which reprints part of the story from ASM #96 and with which it shares a cover. I owned it as a kid and spotted it again recently online and felt nostalgic. Like you do.

Anyway, something about it was nagging me. Something was different. So I compared it to the cover of ASM #96 (pence copy obviously) and aside of the obvious colouring differences, and the fact that it's daytime on the reprint cover, I noticed that there is a lot more of the policeman - sorry, cop, on the right hand side than we're used to seeing:

96p.thumb.jpg.5acd8e07c4fbd4cea58504e7ef6eec06.jpg scw.thumb.jpg.77fc218ca462574129fe95c844c8b5eb.jpg

That's a good inch extra of cop there. So I wonder if the original art has the 'full cop', or did someone add a bit for the reprints oversize cover? I don't think I've ever seen the OA for the cover but did find this prelim piece online:

Hmmm hm
