In a stunning development, Variety is reporting that Joss Whedon has been enlisted to helm a Batgirl solo feature for Warner Bros.

In addition to directing, Whedon will also write and produce the untitled Batgirl project, which will be the latest entry to WB's ever-growing DC Films Universe.

No other producers have been assigned just yet, but Toby Emmerich, Jon Berg, and Geoff Johns will oversee the feature for the studio.

The Variety article announcing this goes into a little more details. But interesting that Joss Whedon is represented by the same company that helped Matt Reeves gain Producer/Director control of The Batman movie. And now they gained Whedon Producer/Director control.

Batgirl is flying solo. The superheroine is getting her own standalone movie from filmmaker Joss Whedon.

Whedon is nearing a deal to write, direct, and produce an untitled Batgirl pic for Warner Bros. as part of its DC Extended Universe.

No other producers are currently attached. Toby Emmerich, president and chief content officer of Warner Bros. Pictures Group, is overseeing with Jon Berg and Geoff Johns. The new project originated in the past month.

Batgirl is one of the most popular superheroes in the world, but has never gotten her own movie. The project will also feature other characters from the world of Gotham.

Batgirl first appeared in DC Comics in 1967 as Barbara Gordon, the daughter of Gotham City police commissioner James Gordon in “The Million Dollar Debut of Batgirl!” by writer Gardner Fox and artist Carmine Infantino.

The Batgirl project will be the second movie from DC Films to star a female lead after Gal Gadot’s “Wonder Woman,” which opens June 2. Extensive footage of the film was shown Wednesday at CinemaCon.

Whedon would be making a big move from the Marvel Cinematic Universe to its DC counterpart, having written and directed “The Avengers” and “Avengers: Age of Ultron” for Disney-Marvel. He also created the television series “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” “Angel,” “Firefly,” “Dollhouse,” and “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”

Warner Bros.’ DC Extended Universe launched with 2013’s “Man of Steel,” followed by last year’s “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” and “Suicide Squad.” Its upcoming films, which have already been dated, include “Wonder Woman”; “Justice League,” debuting Nov. 17; and “Aquaman,” starring Jason Momoa and hitting theaters in December of 2018.

The studio is also developing a “Suicide Squad” sequel and “Gotham City Sirens,” a spinoff to “Suicide Squad” with Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn character; “The Batman,” starring Ben Affleck with Matt Reeves directing; a “Shazam” film and a Black Adam spinoff starring Dwayne Johnson; and projects based on the Flash and Cyborg characters.

Whedon is repped by CAA.

Really like this, just hope it does not go they way his WW project did all those years ago.

He is Producing, Writing and Directing this movie. CAA got him the full control he needs, which I don't believe he had with the Wonder Woman film.

He was supposed to be writer and director for WW, but I am not sure ultimately how much control he was given.  On WW the final word was that he wanted to take the film in a direction the executives were not thrilled with and after bickering for years it just died on the vine.

If WB basically leaves him alone, in addition to everything he learned doing Avengers,  this could be something special.

I am curious to see how this will turn out. While the first Avengers film was great, AoU was bad and both were written/directed by Whedon. He also has/had a hand in the horrible Agents of SHIELD TV show.

Write and direct - not producing, which means he could have driven the scope of the project while limiting studio involvement. It's the same horsepower Christopher Nolan had with 'The Dark Knight', and with 'Man of Steel' Nolan was able to mandate John Peters was never to show up on the set. So now insert Joss Whedon back into the picture - someone that already had to deal with the Warner Bros. hesitance and tampering. So he now gets Producer, Director and Writer.

Whedon is in a much stronger position with Warner Bros. than he was back in 2007. Thank goodness!

Report: Joss Whedon’s ‘Batgirl’ Movie Will Draw from The New 52

Entertainment Weekly reports that Whedon’s Batgirl movie will indeed focus on Barbara Gordon and draw inspiration from The New 52, DC’s recent run of revamped classic comic book characters that kicked off in 2011. The report says Whedon will look to the New 52 as “a starting point,” so expect him to bring his own spin to the material should the movie make.

Gordon’s character has famously had a rough go of it. First introduced as a sidekick to Batwoman in 1961, Batgirl — or Bat-Girl, as she was called — was a socialite by the name of Betty Kane. But the character really took of in 1967, when “the new Batgirl” was introduced in the Detective Comics title The Million Dollar Debut of Batgirl! with the shocking reveal that Jim Gordon’s daughter would suit up and defend Gotham City with Batman and Robin.

The rebranded Batgirl hit the pages just as she was introduced alongside Adam West‘s bam-pow Batman in the third season of the classic camp TV series. The character’s popularity skyrocketed and she landed her own stories, as well as popping up across the DC universe in Superman and Justice League. Until the ’80s came along and put a bullet in her back.
