Deadline is reporting that Universal Pictures has entered early negotiations with Academy Award-winner Bill Condon to direct the upcoming remake of one of their all-time classic monster movies, The Bride of Frankenstein.

No star is currently attached to play the iconic title character, who was originally brought to life by Elsa Lanchester, but with a director finally lined up, it's likely we should hear something on that front in the not-so-distant future. It was also previously rumored that Academy Award-winner Angelina Jolie might be in the running for the highly coveted role, but it's uncertain whether or not that's still the case.

Condon is someone well-versed in the worlds of these ancient evils, having written and directed the critically acclaimed 1998 drama Gods and Monsters, which starred X-Men star Ian McKellen as the troubled James Whale, who helmed the original Bride of Frankenstein. His other credits include Beauty and the Beast, which recently crossed the $1 billion mark at the worldwide box office, Mr. Holmes, The Fifth Estate, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1 & 2, and Dreamgirls. He also made contributions to the screenplay for the upcoming Hugh Jackman-starrer The Greatest Showman.

Universal's rebooted Classic Monsters Universe officially launches this summer with The Mummy, which stars global megastar Tom Cruise in the lead role with Sofia Boutella as the titular monster and Academy Award-winner Russell Crowe as Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde. After that, two untitled monster films have already been slated for April 13, 2018, and February 15, 2019, so it's certainly a possibility that The Bride will occupy one of those dates.

According to Deadline, Bill Condon's Bride of Frankenstein had actually began pre-production in London but the director and studio execs decided to send the crew home for the time being while they get things in order.

“After thoughtful consideration, Universal Pictures and director Bill Condon have decided to postpone Bride of Frankenstein,” Universal said in a statement . “None of us want to move too quickly to meet a release date when we know this special movie needs more time to come together. Bill is a director whose enormous talent has been proven time and again, and we all look forward to continuing to work on this film together.”
