M. Night Shyamalan's Glass: What Does the Title Mean?

M. Night Shyamalan just blew the collective minds of movie fans, when he revealed that his long awaited sequel to 2000's Unbreakable (and eagerly-awaited sequel to this year's Split) has officially been scripted. More than that, Shyamalan revealed the title and release date of the threequel!

Here's where things get interesting: Shyamalan revealed that the title of the Split/Unbreakable sequel will Glass, while also confirming that one of the returning cast members for the film will be none other than Samuel L. Jackson's Elijah Price - aka the Unbreakable villain known as "Mr. Glass."

With Jackson coming back, and the story starting off from the place we saw at the end of Split, we (and a lot of fans) are wondering What the Title Glass Means for the narrative and thematic arc of the movie.

The first and most obvious implication of the title Glass is that the film is centered around Samuel L. Jackson's Elijah Price/Mr. Glass.

Every chapter of this Unbreakable saga has (so far) come with a single-word title that's thematically tied to the central character's arc in the film. Unbreakable was about David Dunn realizing his own power; Split was about Kevin Crumb fracturing his old mind to birth a powerful new persona. Therefore, Glass would indicate a story where Elijah is the focus, and all the implied meanings of the word "glass" (fragility, clarity, a breakable barrier) come into play.

Woohoo! I was just speculating on if he would continue building the hero/villain universe further (I can see teams assembling here, depending on execution)!

So glad I watched Split --before-- I read about this!

Was so cool and chilling hearing the unbreakable train station music again.

There's also speculation that

Young mcavoy's character, kevin, was seen in the train station, walking with his mother and that Glass created him, indirectly, though killing his dad on the train.

Samuel L. Jackson Reveals When ‘Glass’ Starts Filming

Collider’s own Steve Weintraub recently sat down with both Jackson and Ryan Reynolds at the press day for their new film The Hitman’s Bodyguard, and during the course of the conversation he asked for updates on Glass and Deadpool 2. Jackson started off by revealing that Glass, although it was greenlit only a few months ago, starts filming in September:

“We start rehearsal on [September] 18th and I start shooting on the 25th.”

That’s a pretty tremendous turnaround for a sequel to a movie that was released in January, but that’s also the benefit of the Blumhouse business model and the fact that Jackson and Willis have been itching to do an Unbreakable sequel for years. Glass doesn’t hit theaters until January 18, 2019, hoping to mimic the success that Split had in the traditionally dire movie month, so we still have a while to wait. But it’s also possible that, if Blumhouse and Universal get a look at the finished product and see bigger potential, they could shift the release date to the latter half of 2018.

M. Night Shyamalan's 'Glass' Synopsis Revealed

Quote

With the promise of a followup bringing James McAvoy ’s character in Split together with Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson from Unbreakable, we now have a new synopsis for Shyamalan’s next film, called Glass. Universal Pictures released the synopsis which will pit The Beast against David Dunn in a scheme organized by the one they call Mr. Glass. Check it out below.

----------------

M. Night Shyamalan brings together the narratives of two of his standout originals—2000’s UNBREAKABLE and last year’s SPLIT—in one explosive, all-new comic-book thriller: GLASS. From UNBREAKABLE, Bruce Willis returns as David Dunn as does Samuel L. Jackson as Elijah Price, known also by his pseudonym Mr. Glass. Joining from SPLIT are James McAvoy, reprising his role as Kevin Wendell Crumb and the multiple identities who reside within, and Anya Taylor-Joy as Casey Cooke, the only captive to survive an encounter with The Beast.

Following the conclusion of SPLIT, GLASS finds Dunn pursuing Crumb’s superhuman figure of The Beast in a series of escalating encounters, while the shadowy presence of Price emerges as an orchestrator who holds secrets critical to both men.

This riveting culmination of his worldwide blockbusters will be produced by Shyamalan and Jason Blum, who also produced the writer/director’s previous two films for Universal. They produce again with Ashwin Rajan and Marc Bienstock, and Steven Schneider, who will executive produce.

The movie will see the return Split's James McAvoy as Kevin Wendell Crumb/The Beast and Anya Taylor Joy as his surviving victim Casey, along with Bruce Willis (David Dunn) and Samuel L. Jackson (Elijah Price) from Unbreakable.

Now, THR reports that we can add Spencer Treat Clark as David's son and Charlayne Woodard as Elijah's mother to the list.

Specific plot details are still under wraps, but the story is expected to find Dunn on The Beast's trail while Price, a.k.a. Mr. Glass, "emerges as an orchestrator who holds secrets critical to both men"

M. Night Shyamalan’s Glass Starts Production

Quote

M. Night Shyamalan has officially begun production on his Unbreakable and Split followup, titled Glass. Ever since Split became such a huge critical and financial success, fans of the film have been eagerly awaiting each new update that’s been released for progress on its sequel. This was due in part to the fact that Split itself was ultimately revealed to also be a stealth sequel to his earlier hit Unbreakable. The next installment in the series will contain characters from both of those films, as both the title and synopsis for Glass confirm. For his part, Shyamalan has been continually updating social media with pre-production details, and his most recent post marked a significant date for the movie.

Producer Jason Blum has described Glass as being a “very different” kind of superhero movie, similar to what Shyamalan had pretty much already delivered in the first two parts of this surprise trilogy. With Split clocking in over $276M at the worldwide box office, from a production budget of only $9m, it’s safe to say that expectations have been set pretty high for Glass now.

First Look at Samuel L. Jackson's Mr. Glass in 'Unbreakable' Sequel Surfaces Online

Rolling around in his wheelchair, just as he did in the original Unbreakable, Jackson's Mr. Glass looks as menacing as ever.

For those who remember, Glass was revealed as Unbreakable's big villain at the very end of the film. He had been playing David Dunn (Bruce Willis) all along. The character was wheelchair-bound as he had a disease which made him extremely fragile, ultimately leading to his choice to become a villain.

Shyamalan kept the Glass project a secret up until the release of Split earlier this year. While the film was about a group of teenagers trying to escape a man with multiple personalities, it was actually a hidden sequel to Unbreakable. At the end of the film, David Dunn appeared to the audience, connecting the stories of the two films.

Glass, which is set to hit theaters in January 2019, will act a sequel to both Split and Unbreakable.
