"How much more fun could this be?  Deadpool, Donald and FX – the perfect fit for the Merc with the Mouth!" added Jeph Loeb.  "We're thrilled that our relationship with FX that started with Legion continues with what is sure to be a groundbreaking show in adult animation."

Deadpool Animated Series Will Be 'Really Different' From The Movies, FX CEO Says

Quote

Speaking at the Television Critics Associations’ summer press tour, FX CEO John Landgraf said the Deadpool cartoon being worked on by Donald Glover and his brother Stephen Glover has a very different tone than the Deadpool movie that opened last year.

“It’ll be really different from the movies,” Landgraf said. “It’s animated and they’re live-action, but also it has a different tone and editorial voice as evidenced by Donald and Stephen Glover, who have their own voice and tone. We really wanted to make something that was distinctly different from the movies.”

As for when fans will get to see the cartoon, that’s still to be determined.

“We’ve picked it up to series but I can’t tell you when it’s going to be scheduled yet because it’s gotta be great,” Landgraf said.

Donald Glover has a lot on his plate with Star Wars, Atlanta, and the Deadpool animated series and the work follows him wherever he goes.

“They had a staff working in London while Donald was shooting Star Wars,” Landgraf said. “He wrote the second season of Atlanta before London, had a staff in London, he’s coming back to shoot Atlanta season 2 and simultaneously we’ll be animating Deadpool.”

Landgraf says they’re working hard to make sure Glover is able to fuel all of his creative outlets.

“Working with talent, you don’t want to squelch their [opportunities],” Landgraf said. “You don’t want to say don’t do the Star Wars movie and play the first African-American character in cinema who inspired you when you were young. You want to figure it out so we juggle people’s schedules.”

Exclusive: Donald Glover's Big Inspiration

Whilst promoting the second season of FX’s Atlanta that Glover created and stars in, as well as touching on his upcoming role as Lando Calrissian in Solo: A Star Wars Story, the musician/actor/comedian/writer that is Donald Glover took some time to talk about the upcoming Deadpool series that he has co-created. During the interviews Glover talked about how much pressure he feels in producing the show based on such a popular character, and began by letting us know a goal he wanted to ensure when creating the series:

"That it's funny," he said. "That one it just seems really easy. There's not as much to hold sacred, in a weird way. I know people love Deadpool and I know people are big comic book geeks, but it's not the same as Lando or Atlanta, where you have a whole city on your back. Deadpool is very aware of himself, so, I don't have to live up to anything. So it's been actually, quite easy."

The FX series will be co-produced by Marvel Television, FX Productions, and ABC Signature Studios. Donald and Stephen Glover will serve as show-runners, writers, and executive producers; to the series that will feature 10 episodes in its first season.

The series is optimistically expected to debut in May of this year, just in time for Reynolds and Leitch’s Deadpool 2 AKA The Untitled Deadpool Sequel which shall be released on May 18th.

'Deadpool' Animated Series Writer Stefani Robinson Talks What to Expect, Compares Wade Wilson to God

Quote

Atlanta staff writer Stefani Robinson dropped a few precious hints in conversation with ComicBook.com about another project she’s working on with Donald Glover: FX’s Deadpool animated series.

“I think expect just more of the Atlanta writers room type of specificity, if that makes sense,” Robinson said of the approach to the Merc With a Mouth’s forthcoming series, noting that the show will have its own distinct approach and style, set somewhat apart from the comic book or film series.

“I believe that we sort of attacked it at an angle that was very true to us and made sense to us, and I don't think we took many cues from the movie or what the general public knows about Deadpool,” Robinson added. “I think we sort of lean into the comic books. We're like, ‘This is how we interpret this person, and this character, this superhero, this anti-hero, whatever,’ and sort of made that apply to what we love in TV in our lives.”

“I loved the Deadpool character because he can't die!” Robinson said of her fondness for Wade Wilson. “I mean, for all intents and purposes, I think that he is like God in a way. It's sort of fun to play with a character who can do anything, basically, and really get into the mentality of someone who is bored with life, who doesn't feel any stakes, doesn't feel any danger, and is like, ‘OK – This is just kind of my life, and what do I do with being someone who exists on a superior platform than everybody else?’ What would you do if you lived forever, couldn't die?"

We May Get Our First Look At FXX's DEADPOOL Animated Series As Soon As This March

Untitled-design6.jpg

FX Networks is doing their upfronts earlier than normal, specifically March 15th. Alongside FXX's sister network, FX (home to another Marvel Television-produced series, Legion), both networks will showcase and announce new shows for the upcoming year, to help entice advertisers. As Deadpool has been in production since the announcement last year, it seems likely that casting announcements, promotional art or even a full trailer reveal could be in the works in just over two weeks.

FX Networks in particular is in a tricky position this year, as the seemingly inevitable Disney buyout would give Disney ownership of the network (but not their broadcast cousin, the FOX network), and the decision has left people questioning the future of the network, given it's famously TV-MA slate of shows.

FX has pulled out of Marvel's Deadpool animated series from brothers Donald and Stephen Glover following "creative differences," Deadline reports. The animated adult action-comedy was to be overseen by Glover, the creator-slash-star-slash-executive producer of FX's acclaimed Atlanta.

“Due to creative differences, FX, Donald Glover, Stephen Glover and Marvel Television have agreed to part ways on Marvel’s Deadpool animated series,” FX said in a statement Saturday. “FX will no longer be involved with the project. FX and Marvel have an ongoing relationship through our partnership on Legion, which will continue.”

The cable network announced a 10-episode straight-to-series order last May, set to premiere this year on FX Networks' comedy-oriented FXX. Marvel TV was to produce in association with FX Productions and ABC Signature Studios, with Marvel’s Jeph Loeb and Jim Chory serving as executive producers.

It's unclear if Marvel TV and ABC Studios will still pursue the project or if the Glovers will continue to be involved.

Any reason given? Really wanted to see this one.

No word yet, other than there was some fallout over direction.

I wonder if they were pushing it with the -script language or sexual content, and the TV execs felt uncomfortable. Even with it being FXX.

Donald Glover has been posting whole scripts from planned animated episodes last night. Probably to demonstrate if there was any concern, it wasn't with his ability to have scripts available. He even included the finale -script.

Glover himself took to social media to share a series of tweets featuring the pages from his -script, yet, as of this writing, he has deleted all Deadpool-related tweets from his page. The only tweet that remains is a link to the performer's PHAROS project, which features a number of live performances in one immersive experience, which will be taking place in New Zealand.

Glover has had a complicated relationship with social media, regularly deactivating/reactivating his account and modifying his username. Leaving up only one tweet isn't entirely strange for Glover, though we can't help but wonder if he deleted his Deadpool tweets on his own volition or if the fan interest around his -script has caused the project to get back on the market.

The series of tweets kicked off with Glover posting, "For the record: I wasn't too busy to work on Deadpool," followed by page after page of screenshots of his -script.

hm

Could this be a good sign where all the parties cooled off and rethought this?

It looks like Donald Glover's Deadpool cartoon and FX are really never, ever, ever getting back together thanks to a Taylor Swift episode.

Stephen Glover took to Twitter to share some thoughts on the series-which-won't-be, claiming there was a specific episode about musical sensation Taylor Swift which was the deal breaker between their efforts and FX.

“There really was a Taylor Swift episode,” Stephen wrote tweet which he has since deleted. “It was HILARIOUS. And it definitely was the last straw lol.”

Stephen Glover didn't stop there. He had more explaining to do about what the Deadpool series could have been. “Our show wasn’t too black," Glover wrote in another tweet which has also been deleted. "It wasn’t really that black at all. But we definitely wanted to give Rick and Morty a run for their money and I think we would have. Proud of the gang."

We have seen quite an R-rated animation boom. It has also gotten the attention of the comic book industry. DC’s animated series Harley Quinn offered a rather bloody look at Gotham and its villains with enough humor to balance its bubbly characters. It looks like it may have also gotten Marvel and Marvel Studios’ attention that there is a potential market here.

The site Bubbleblabber reported on the recent news that Disney started the 20th Century Animation studio. In the Deadline report, they’ve revealed that various new projects are in development. They would join the currently produced eleven shows, such as Family Guy, Bob’s Burgers, Central Park, and many more. According to the site Bubbleblabber, one of those mystery projects is an R-rated Deadpool series starring Ryan Reynolds, who may be in talks for the titular role.

It is interesting to note that Deadpool 3 is in active development, as we know they are already preparing the -script for the film, which will be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. There was no mention of this series that will connect to the MCU. If they manage to get Ryan Reynolds involved, it would be a creative way to continue Deadpool’s adventures in the MCU. It isn’t the first attempt at an R-rated adaptation of the Merc with a Mouth. Donald Glover was developing a series for FXX alongside Marvel Television. The series was going to be run by him and his brother Stephen Glover. We have no further news on this new adaptation. So, it could be in a very early conceptual stage. We have to this news with a grain of salt for now.

Disney And Adult Swim Make Key Corporate Changes In Face Of Adult Animation Boom

Quote

Not to be outdone, Disney is continuing to see the increased success in their ongoing investments in adult animation, despite doing their best at trying to kill off their fanbase with voice actor changes, incorrect aspect ratios, and silly warnings being displayed before content viewing.

Deadline is reporting (note, they incorrectly labeled adult animation a “genre”) that Disney has launched 20th Television Animation with Marci Proietto running the new division. The relaunched studio will not only continue to manage it’s busy slate of originals that include The Great North, Solar Opposites, Koala Man, The Simpsons, Family Guy, Bob’s Burgers, Bless The Harts, Duncanville (the showrunners just signed with Verve), American Dad, Central Park, and The Prince. Not only are those 11 series in production, but the unit has “dozens” of other series in various stages of production (an animated Deadpool R-rated series for Hulu starring Ryan Reynolds in the lead role is being discussed) and is looking to expand which is very exciting news.

The further away from the Disney board…the better.
