This is not a pence variant query per se but I couldn't think of anywhere else to put it that would ensure that is was seen by our few UK posters. Why the different T&P price stamps 9d and 10d?  Is this just a case/shipment getting misplaced in the warehouse or were there 2nd printings or something else?  Apologies to Marwood for hijacking his post (I can delete if need be Steve).

You can post anything here Stephen, don't worry about that :)

It's certainly odd. There are about six copies on ebay with 9d stamps and only the one 10d stamped (sold) copy. The book is dated August 1964. We know there were no pence printed DC books at that time but, as an indicator, the Marvel books we know changed from 9d to 10d one year later:

So it's odd for this book to have a 10d stamp.

Who knows why. Lots of little oddities like this out there.

Thanks for posting it Stephen - remember,  any post is a welcome post in the pence graveyards. The stamp price makes it pence related anyway (thumbsu

Found another. So two 10d copies, one with a 6 and one with a 9:

@Redshade, have you ever seen an official explanation for the numbers in the top half of the price stamp? I wondered whether they signified months, or perhaps different distribution areas? Oddly enough, I've never done too much digging on it.

I never thought about different distribution areas being the reason for the header number. I always assumed(rightly or wrongly) that they were for individual operatives each with their own identifiable stamp, but no I have not looked into it before and neither have I ever seen any explanations or answers as to why this was done.

There are a few knowledgeable UK dealers I can ask. I'll post here if I find anything out.

I've been asking all my contacts about the T&P stamp numbering and only one has advanced a theory which makes sense. It's amazing that no one has a definitive answer - some of these chaps are the most knowledgeable comic people in the UK yet almost all of them have echoed the same sentiment - "No, we don't know either".

I need to pull some examples together to support the theory which is from my favourite UK comic dealer, a splendid chap who happens to share a name with one of the two remaining living Beatles.

Be back soon :)

Afternoon :)

Two final updates for this thread - first up, a friend has found one error in the calculations on my spreadsheet so we now have 840 confirmed DC pence variants. It doesn't mean we've found a new book, just that I mis-typed a 34 as 33.

Second thing, I've spent quite a bit of time looking at the T&P stamps to see if I can identify a common pattern which may help to explain the numbering (see previous posts). The results are inconclusive, so I'm no nearer finding an explanation I'm afraid. I suspect this may be one of those situations where the knowledge is just no longer there and has been lost in time. But if anyone reading this knows something, please do dive in.

Other than that, and as I just posted in my Marvel pence thread, this thread will go quiet now as I have nothing left to report on! All the comic images I have collected will be going to the GCD next year.

Thanks for reading :)

That friend was Ben Nobel who runs the 'Rare Comics' online blog. I've been helping him to produce an online issue guide for Marvel and DC pence variants - the results can be found here if you'd like to take a peek:

I found this advert in a 15p copy of Weird Western Tales #69 from July 1980:

It took me a few seconds to realise it was advertising this:

The GCD has this as July 1981 though - a year after the July 1980 WWT issue. Doesn't seem right does it?

I prefer the pence - or should I say 'pound' - copy of course:

Also 1981. All good fun :)

....or not :p

There are 40 DC 'Ghosts' out there, did you know, haunting up the joint. I know this, because some bloke on ebay measured them:

89.thumb.jpg.44739ac4bc0c7a8084363b367a2263a3.jpg

I try not to do that as a rule.

They're not that common as pence copies, Ghosts, and the files have a few dodgy images that I hope to replace when someone gets around to loading a better copy up somewhere online. Or if I find one cheap on my travels.

The chart remains static since the unfamous miscalculation calamity of 2018. 840 pence books, 40 of which are Ghosts:

ghostsa.PNG.fb9c893d0ceb46c0faf5c7584ac27840.PNG

One pence copy I will never find of course is the 'Ghosts Special'. Too early you see. But here's a copy with a rather attractive 30p stamp on it, in glorious recognition of it's out of the ordinary size.

So, it made it over. A 'distributed' copy, as others might call it. I call it a cents copy.

You can tell I'm bored can't you.

Any good? I got it of read on line this morning

Cheers Bob. My aim is for each image in the files to be a full image of the full comic.  I don't like them when they're cropped / you can't see the full book, or fuzzy. Cheers for trying :foryou:

Good one for the files example :)
