Getting back to DC, here's a few sales of the 1967 Thorpe & Porter annuals which include remaindered comics:

I wasn't the winner of any of them alas. I do have automatic searches set up in eBay but they never seem to work. And every time I think to look manually I find I've only just missed a copy. Quite frustrating, as I would like to own at least one copy.

Here's a reminder of the 12 known copies:

Evening all Part III (See Dell and Marvel Freds) :)

Not often the DC thread gets a post is it :headbang:

Someone donated 6 boxes of comics at work this week, which happens once in a while, and as resident 'man who knows about comics' I did my usual thing of taking them home, going through them and getting them into sets for selling in our shops. There was about 1,000 comics in all, mostly modern DCs and it was clear they had been 'picked over' as there wasn't a damn thing there worth tuppence.

Still, there was these 4 lone oldies, and they were obligingly all pence copies:

I'll be scanning them for file upgrades at the weekend :)

Look what I managed to snag, for less than the cost of lunch.

The cover is kind of bent, but the insides are in great shape. It contains Aquaman 28, Detective 363, Aquaman 30, Action 345, Superman 192 & Detective 352, in that order.

The real gem is Detective 363, 2nd Barbara Gordon Batgirl. The cover looks like it's just come off the press.1360258787_tpaqanndc363.thumb.jpg.637f19f0068afecb261e65d81aee7470.jpg

And no T&P stamps!

Nice catch Barbara!

I take it the comics are all trimmed to size? Is it by much? I've yet to manage to find one myself.

And talking of not giving a flying fart at a rolling doughnut, the GCD lists 'Star Trek The Final Frontier Movie Special' as having two covers, US newsstand and direct:

239877325_StarTrekMovieSpecialGCD.thumb.PNG.1076cd5aa02933e8eb0a55b24428c04a.PNG

Both covers have the same pricing as follows:

  • US $2.00
  • CAN $2.50
  • U.K. 80p

1989 is of course long after the DC pence window and, that aside, there would be no need for a separate UK version as the triple priced US issues cover the UK market.

I picked up a US newsstand to compare it to my £1.00 barcoded copy.

1768848013_StarTrekMovieSpecial1_00.thumb.jpg.1962039600e5f1651b2db3cf4821f473.jpg  1735732691_StarTrekMovieSpecialUSNewsstand.thumb.jpg.d54e028dafee352664ddf25759852193.jpg

The cover differences are:

  1. Pricing
  2. Top right CCA replaced with 'London Editions Magazines'
  3. Different barcodes
  4. £1.00 copy has '(c) 1989 Paramount Pictures Competition' along the top right edge

The back covers (UK first):

And the inside shows different back cover adverts and an amended indicia on the UK version again identifying 'London Editions Magazines' as the culprit:

20191009_171624.thumb.jpg.08efcdd23cb6f060fdbcef4e2710d928.jpg

All the internal contents are identical (no ads in either), but the paperstock is superior on the £1.00 copy (at the back in the photo) compared to the newsprint US version:

So not a new DC Price Variant and clearly a repackaged product.

I wonder why it exists though? The 'competition' wording on the cover seems at odds with the cover pricing. If it was produced to be sold in shops, as the price suggests, why if a saleable version already exists via the US copies?

Odd.

Who wants to chip in? I'd ask rakehell, but he's confused :S

Right. I'm awake now. And coherent. How long will it last? Start your timers... NOW!

The obvious answer is, of course, money.

Why do this:

Creepy_Worlds_Vol_1_32.jpg.3ab9af37c4d1f5b5b767d54fcb167b12.jpg

When you already have this:

fantastic-four-1-9d.jpg.563f03308c29186cc61ba619b477bda7.jpg

if not to take more shillings from schoolboys in short trousers.

The other obvious answer (arguably more obvious in the case of CW32/FF1) is why the hell not.

Personally, and I'm sure you agree Marwood, I'm glad such variety exists. It's what I tend to go for in my collecting. I guess this particular bit of Shatnerism is just at the low end of the desirability scale. Again, just my personal opinion. (thumbsu

I was under the impression that I had already done enough to confirm my love of variety.... :)

No worries - you're in good company, if the ratings are anything to go by (thumbsu
