STOLEN ORIGINAL ART ALERT

16 posts in this topic

Hi all, I know there are some original art fans on these boards and others who appreciate it but don't collect it. A lot of you are also connected in the comics world in general.

I got a call yesterday from Mark McDermott who runs "Simply the Best" Original Art. He told me a portfolio full of art was either lost or stolen from him last week (most likely stolen). Below is the email from him with the list of pieces that were in it. There some definite Big-Ticket items in the portfolio, including a Kirby Thor 150 splash, some pages from JIM 86, some Buscema Thor and Surfer splashes, etc. It's a nightmare scenario as you can imagine.

If you or anyone you know gets offered any of these pieces or sees them for sale, please contact Mark at the number at the bottom of this post. I know he'll appreciate everyone looking out for the art.

Thanks,

Steve

I have filed a police report and checked with local lost and

founds and have yet to track the portfolio down. I also

alerted all the local comic shops for them to be on the lookout.

The portfolio contained the following pages:

 Journey Into Mystery 86:  (9) Pages 2, 3, 5, 7, 8, 10, 11, 12, 13   Kirby

He lost them in New York. I got a call from him on Saturday about it. Really does suck. I'm not sure he insured them. Let this be a lessen.... insure your art (and comics)! It's cheaper than you think!

Just pray it doesn't get cut into little pieces and sold on eBay. tonofbricks.gif

Good luck getting it back.

It should be easier with art than comics.

But was he at a show or something? Just walking the streets with this portfolio or what?

He is a dealer/collector. He will often come up to NYC just to meet up with some of us to see if we can work deals, and I think that is what he was doing when he lost it. I'm not really sure if it was lost or stolen.

No show...he was passing through NYC, trying to work some deals. He believes that the art was lost/stolen around either the car rental place or hotel, which would be in the West 50s between 6th and 7th Avenues. I hope some guy isn't trying to hawk these pages on the street over there. But, if you happen to see them on a streetside table next to the bootleg CDs or see some guy with an art portfolio underneath his trenchcoat asking, "Pssst...wanna buy some comic art?", please let Mark know ASAP (he's planning on flying in tomorrow for the Heritage sale, BTW). He is a good guy. And, no, sadly, he was not insured. I really hope he can recover that art. 893crossfingers-thumb.gif

The worst part would be if the crook thought that they were just a bunch of crappy drawings and pitched them. If they get sold back into the market they will turn up.
