Warner Bros. Reportedly Developing A Live-Action RED SON Movie

Superman: Red Son tells the story of a Kal-El who crash landed in Soviet Russia rather than Kansas and a variety of sources are now reporting that a live-action adaptation of that tale is in the works.

It started with an exchange between Mark Millar and Kong: Skull Island director Jordan Vogt-Roberts which saw the latter reveal that Warner Bros. had turned down his pitch for a Superman: Red Son movie but Den of Geek claims to have heard from "very, very, very reliable sources" that the studio is looking to bring the Mark Millar penned comic to the big screen at some point in the near future.

Millar has said on Twitter that Warner Bros. has met with at least two filmmakers to discuss the property and provided a statement to the site in which he says, "I've got pals at Warner Bros but never discussed it with them. I think they're just going through their back catalogue of big books and hoping to lure in good directors as opposed to any particular interest in developing Red Son."

It's far from confirmed as happening just yet, but between the comments made by Vogt-Roberts and Millar and the site's claims that they've heard it's potentially in the works, the signs are looking good.

Bruce Timm Eyeing 'Superman: Red Son' for Next Movie

DC Animation legend Bruce Timm has his eye on a classic Superman tale.

Timm spoke to ComicBook.com and other reporters during a Q&A at the premiere of Batman: Gotham by Gaslight. He revealed that the Elseworlds story he'd most like to tackle next is Superman: Red Son.

Superman: Red Son is a fan-favorite Elseworlds comic. Mark Millar wrote the three-issue miniseries. Dave Johnson and Killian Plunkett provided the art.

Red Son imagines what the DC Comics universe would look like if Kal-El's rocket didn't land in Kansas. What if it landed in the Soviet Union instead? This change sends ripple effects throughout the DC Universe.

Here's the official synopsis for Superman: Red Son used on the collected edition of the series:

"Imagine a reality where the world’s most powerful super-being does not grow up in Smallville, Kansas – or even America, for that matter…SUPERMAN: RED SON is a vivid tale of Cold War paranoia, that reveals how the ship carrying the infant who would later be known as Superman lands in the midst of the 1950s Soviet Union. Raised on a collective, the infant grows up and becomes a symbol to the Soviet people, and the world changes drastically from what we know – bringing Superman into conflict with Batman, Lex Luthor and many others."

Reminder of what is coming.

Finally, it’s worth noting that along with the three full-length animated movies, 2020 will also bring us several animated “DC Showcase” shorts, which will be included with the films as bonus content. Announced earlier this year, the shorts feature:

  • Sgt. Rock
  • Adam Strange
  • Neil Gaiman's Death
  • The Phantom Stranger
  • An adaptation of Batman: Death in the Family

I'm more excited over the DC Showcase productions as those turn out solid (Superman/Shazam: The Return of Black Adam).

I’m most looking forward to the Phantom Stranger short included in the DVD.

Sometimes those DC Showcase spots are the solid gold needed.

Superman/Shazam: Return of Black Adam

Jonah Hex (Superman/Shazam bluray)

The Spectre (Superman/Shazam bluray)

Green Arrow (Superman/Shazam bluray)

Catwoman (Batman: Year One bluray)

Sergeant Rock (Batman: Hush bluray)
