"Definitive" List of Bronze Age Marvel Keys

Not to nitpick bit why is Iron Man 282 on the list? That isn't a Bronze Age key....

Well, the honest answer is that my selfish reason for starting this thread was:  Now that I've submitted all of my Silver Age books, what other books in my collection should I consider sending in to CGC?  99% of the books under consideration were Bronze Age but I did give some thought to books that are clearly later than Bronze.

I'm not sure where most people consider the Bronze Age to have ended -- maybe somewhere around the cover price increase to 50 cents? -- but clearly the list above has some that are later.  One quick glance and I see ASM #238 & 300, Incredible Hulk #271, Iron Man #282, and X-Men #266, which I'm now going to delete.  Thanks for helping me make this list more true to its name and more useful to other people, not just my personal checklist.  (thumbsu

** EDITED TO INCLUDE CORRECTIONS AND ADDITIONS **

Hi everyone,

Having assembled complete Bronze Age (and almost-complete Silver Age) runs of most of the prominent Marvel titles, I'm in the process of having my collection graded and figuring out which of my books have the most value (not to mention which of my copies aren't up to snuff and need to be replaced with better copies).

As part of this little project, I wanted to put together a "definitive" list of the Bronze Age keys that I should be focusing on in evaluating and potentially upgrading my collection.  I've put together a preliminary list off the top of my head -- I'm sure isn't complete, and I'm interested in hearing the group's comments on what books need to be added to this list.  I'm sure there will be a few cases where you'll be tempted to say "How could you forget about this book?!" and so on, so please be gentle when pointing out glaring omissions.  Like I said, this was off the top of my head.

I'm also going a bit from memory as to where the boundaries are between what people consider late-Silver and Bronze.  Generally I'm talking about 20-cent to 30-cent cover prices, but a 15-cent book like Conan #1 is usually called Bronze.  So there's probably some gray area there too and I am open to your thoughts.

I also cheated a bit on the other end for a few titles, going well past what most consider the Bronze Age to toss in a few more recent books that are typically sought after.

Here's what I've put together so far, in alphabetical order (and with a lot of variation in value / desirability -- some of these books are clearly much stronger than others):

  • Amazing Adventures #11
  • Amazing Spider-Man #101, 121, 122, 129, 135, 136, 149, 194
  • Astonishing Tales #25
  • Avengers #83, 93, 100, 112, 181, 196
  • Captain America #117, 217
  • Captain Marvel #25
  • Cat #1
  • Conan the Barbarian #1, 23, 24
  • Daredevil #131, 158, 168
  • Fantastic Four #112
  • Fear #19
  • Ghost Rider #1
  • Giant-Size Creatures #1
  • Giant-Size X-Men #1
  • Hero For Hire #1
  • Incredible Hulk #141, 180, 181
  • Iron Fist #1, 14
  • Iron Man #54, 55, 128
  • Marvel Feature #1
  • Marvel Premiere #1, 15, 47
  • Marvel Preview #4, 7
  • Marvel Spotlight #2, 5, 32
  • Ms. Marvel #1, 16, 17, 18
  • Night Nurse #1
  • Nova #1
  • Savage She-Hulk #1
  • Special Marvel Edition #15
  • Star Wars #1
  • Strange Tales #169, 180
  • Sub-Mariner #34, 35
  • Thor #193, 225
  • Tomb of Dracula #1, 10
  • 2001 #8
  • Werewolf By Night #32
  • X-Men #94, 101, 109, 120, 121, 129, 130, 141

Very interested to hear what other books should be on this list, and bracing for ridicule on whatever I've inadvertently left out!

If you were to cull that down that list to a Top 5-10 must haves (primarily if not entirely from an objective standpoint), what would/should the list look like?  I would think the top 3-4 that would have to be on the list are:

-Hulk 181

-ASM 129

-X-Men 94

-X-Men GSX 1

What else should perhaps be considered on such a short list?  I have some feelings about the following from just personal preference:

-any one or all of ASM 121, 122, 194

-Daredevil 168

-Hulk 180

-Star Wars 1 (though this isn't a comic property)

-X-Men 101 & 129

Weird to think of DD 168 as Bronze Age tho it definitely is. When I first started collecting Daredevil 176-181 just blew my mind. Miller is riding the end of the Bronze Age just before he and Alan Moore and Neil Gaiman and Grant Morrison were about to "blow it all up".

Marvel Spotlight 5

Conan 1

I'd have WWBN 32 before Tomb o Drac 10 also.

Fair - forgot about WWBN 32 - I think that 10th spot is totally open for debate (and doing it again I would pick WWBN 32 or reluctantly Star Wars 1), but am happy with picks 1-9 :)

I would add:

MARVEL SIDE

SAVAGE TALES #1v1 -1st MAN THING

Adventure into Fear 19- 1st HOWARD THE DUCK

the problem is some announcement may launch and obscure 1st appearance into the stratosphere. Here some I consider underlooked:

DAREDEVIL #150 - 1st Paladin

Deadly Hands of Kung Fu #23-1st Jack of Hearts

Deadly Hands of Kung Fu #19- 1st White Tiger. With the success of Black Panther this is a latino martial arts character ripe for Marvel to use

Invaders #8- 1st Union Jack

Spiderman and his Amazing friends #1-1st Firestar

X-Men #107- 1st STARJAMMERS

Avengers #145- 1st Hellcat

Incredible Hulk Annual #5- 2nd appearance of GROOT not a reprint

Marvel Previews #4-1st Starlord

Incredible Hulk #271-1st Rocket Raccoon

Strange Tales #181- 1st Gamora

Strange Tales #169-1st Brother Voodoo

Power Pack #1-1st Power Pack

DC SIDE

Adventure Comics #428- 1st Ochid

Ragman #1-1st Ragman

New Teen Titans #2-1st Deathstroke and Trigon

New Teen Titans #21-1st Brother Blood also 1st NIGHT FORCE

Legion of Superheroes #298-1st Amethyst Princess of Gemworld

FIrestorm #1-1st Firestorm

Starfire #1-1st Starfire

Action #521-1st Vixen

Just my 2¢
