Son of My 50 Year Junk Obsession

Ya know you are getting older on days like this...:sorry:

Got a call this afternoon that my good friend Joe passed away. 56 years old of colon cancer.

Joe has been a good junk friend for many years. He was the guy that bought and sold the "Paul" collection. I remember going over to his place to see them for the first time. Box fulls of killer GA and all for sale. He had sold off most of the Batmans to a guy he really didn't like much. I was the second call and way overjoyed to be #2.

Joe and his wife had a comic store in PA years ago so he knew comics but didn't collect them. He had a world class collection of "tribal art" which I didn't care about but it was world class. He had everything priced at Overstreet and I bought as much as I could everytime we met up. If I didn't have the dough that day, he would hold them for me until I could come up with the scratch. I was always his first call when he would unearth new ones out of the hundreds of boxes of "stuff" he found. We had so much fun going through them. They were all mixed up in boxes with pulps, sci-fi stuff, other magazines and even porn. I got the whole story on "Paul".

To this day, I run into stray "in the wild" copies around my area. I always think of those days going through those boxes.

He was a good friend who also, like me, loved motorcycles and rock 'n roll. A very positive attitude all the way through his illness. A smile and a story for everybody. Never talking about his illness unless I asked.

I was going to post some "Paul" books in his honor and I remembered this one. He kept the ECs until the last and I got first crack at them. He loved this one so much he had a tattoo of this cover on his leg! About a year ago, he came up to my booth at a show and just gave it to me. The last book from a remarkable collection.

Damn, the good die young sometimes. But I'm still here bro, riding my bike, cranking my rock-a-billy music and enjoying all those wonderful "Paul" comics. I will miss you. RIP until we meet again!

Sorry about your friend . He sound like a wonderful guy. All men over 40 should go and get checked for colon cancer . Could you share the story for the “Paul” collection ? It’s the first time i have heard about it.

Thanks for the kind words guys. This has been expected but still a big shock and a little hard to deal with. Seems like it happens a lot more as I get older. I appreciate being able to come here and reflect and unload a little. We are all comic people. Death is just so damn final.

As has been said, get your self checked out on a regular basis. It’s easy. My dad died of the same thing so I do.

Appreciate the ones you love. Reach out to those you might have had problems with. Life is short. Treasure the time you got and those that make an impact on your life.

I have told the story of the “Paul” collection here before. It was remarkable and so much fun. I will tell it again later.

Sorry about your loss Bob. My best friend from back east died about a year and a half ago in a tragic accident on a race track; completely unexpected and we had been texting just the day before. You just never know what can happen so you are right to appreciate the day and those in your life!

Hey Robot Man, greetings from the land of Robots, Japan! I was in Osaka last night and came across a four story emporium of fun Japanese junk! Everything from toys to vintage Manga! Lots of robots here to look at and just an amazing store to go through for fun. Check out the vintage Astro Boy book in the last photo!

Looks like a Mandarake store if I'm not mistaken? They're the best, the one in Nakano is super massive it's like its own city.

Yes that was it’s name; heading to Tokyo tomorrow any good suggestions for similar stores to visit?

They have another 5 mandarake stores all along the main JR rail tokyo loop (green line I think). The biggest and most impressive with the best variety is definitely the one in Nakano. You could spend a whole day there without even trying. Some of the things they have are incredible. They have others locations in Akihabara and Shibuya that are good. Akihabara is also full of arcades which is really fun. It all really depends on how much time you have (thumbsu

Wow! Some cool stuff in those photos. Surprised I don’t see any Godzilla stuff. He is REAL big in Japan. I assume that is 65k in yen. Wonder what it is in dollars? Have fun there. I got to go a few times for my last job.

There was a whole Godzilla case I just didn’t snap a photo. I’ll get to another store in Tokyo and get a shot. I was looking for some Gigantor models but didn’t see any. We used to watch that show along with Astro Boy when I was a kid!

I would able to see the prices in Yen so I converted from Ұ65,000 to Ұ7000 to $583 to $63.  I tried to find those books here via Internet.  eBay sales of vintage dolls and books are located in Japan - it seemed overpriced than that store's prices.
