circumstances
The Internet is definitely an almost all you can eat 24 hour buffet. I was just thinking about getting out to a hardcore comic con in the next year or so. I'll look into Terry's (I'm in LA a couple of times a year already). Is the Baltimore show you mentioned just called Baltimore Comic Con?

n2wdw
Most Memorable Original Art Purchase At SDCC - Summer Blonde by Adrian Tomine Optic Nerve is a great independent comic. It's by Adrian Tomine and it's one of those "slice of life" comics. That is, stories about real life. One of my favorites is Summer Blonde. You start reading it and you can't put it down. The characters are complex and nuanced, and the story draws you in and has unexpected twists and turns. At one SDCC -- I think it must have been around 2004 or 2006 -- Adrian was attending courtesy of Drawn & Quarterly. I went to meet him and get an autograph (and if he was willing, a quick sketch of the blonde in Summer Blonde). While I waited in line, I looked through his portfolio. And there it was! The cover of Optic Nerve 7, the Summer Blonde issue! And, the cover of the Summer Blonde TPB! I bought both. At the time, it was the most I'd ever spent on original art. Since I was buying 2 pieces, I probably could have haggled and got a better price. But, I have a mental block in my head about negotiating with artists. So I just paid his asking price. Here's the art and my CGC copy of the book. I don't have a picture of the TPB cover. I'll try to post that someday. n2wdw
Browsing eBay I have eBay searches set up like lots of people, but sometimes I just browse a category. It's like going through an unsorted long box. So a couple weeks ago I browsed through "CGC in Golden Age Comics." It was fun and worth the effort, because I found these 2 great comics priced to sell. The Truth Sweetheart Secrets was priced for less than the cost of grading! Also, both fit 2 of my current collecting interest, Charles Biro covers and photo romance covers. n2wdw
Torchy! What are the top 10 golden age GGA covers? It all personal taste of course, but I bet most lists would include Torchy 5. I admired it from afar for many years, and when I eventually focused my collecting on golden age, Torchy 5 was one of the first comics I sought out. This is my copy: I'm trying to put together a complete run of the Quality series. It's slow going. They're not rare (I don't think) but they don't show up that often in decent grade. I think most are sitting in collector vaults, never to see the light of day again. So the other day on eBay this IW/Super Comics Torchy reprint from 1964 showed up. Just one issue in the run. For some reason it's #16. I've never understood that. GCD and Overstreet don't shed any light, although I admit I haven't put too much effort into figuring out the mystery. But every Torchy completist must have this book, because it has a new Torchy cover. And even though it reprints #4, the GGA is so great it's worth it to have the reprint. Here are some of the best panels. szav, Ricksneatstuff, jimjum12 and 1 other 3
Popular Post n2wdw
Random Act of Generosity From a Boardie About a month ago, I wrote how I was one issue shy of completing the Marvel Comics Index. The Marvel Comics Index is a high quality index by George Olshevsky that ran 12 issues, beginning in 1976. I bought the first issue (that covered Spider-man) through the mail via an ad that ran in the old Comics Buyers Guide. I acquired the rest at cons and tried to get them in nice condition for cheap prices. Sure, I could get on the internet and have the entire series in 5 minutes, but for me a big part of the fun of collecting is the hunt for cheap, nice looking comics. About a month ago, I found the Thor issue for $5 at the Steel City con in Pittsburgh. To complete the title, I just had to get the Conan issue. Sometimes when I'm close to completing a title, I'm willing to pay more for the last issues I need. But decent copies on eBay are running $20 to $30 for Conan. That was way more than I wanted to spend. Then I got a PM from @KirbyJack. He said he had the Conan issue and was willing to send it to me -- for free! What a great guy! So now finally (after 42 years!) I've completed the Marvel Comics Index. As any completist will tell you, there's a deep satisfaction when you complete a run. And probably only true comic lovers would want this title, so it's perfect that I completed it through an act of kindness from another comic lover. Thanks @KirbyJack! n2wdw
Nellie the Nurse The other day I picked up Nellie the Nurse 3 with the classic diving cover. (It's CBCS but what can you do? I'm thinking about getting it regraded.) There are about 5 issues in this title I'm still trying to get. Including the super classic #1. At the moment I only have 2 other issues -- here they are: badback83 and Microbia
jimjum12
Atlas GGA is so cool..... one of the books I miss the most is my Hedy De Vine 22 ..... and it's almost impossible to find one in any kind of shape, if at all. I actually read it cover to cover and while not as exceptional as the Ward Torchy's, it's not far from it. I actually have a copy of 22 (maybe I bought it from you?). The entire series is hard to get. The only other issue I have is 30.
n2wdw
Regrading PGX Books I just sent in 2 PGX books for regrading, Rangers 7 (5.5) and 8 (6.0). I'll be happy if they come back from CGC with only losing a point each. I'll post in a few months when I get them back. Rangers is my favorite Fiction House title, and boy does it have some great interior GGA. Here are some pages from the 2 comics. n2wdw
On 11/4/2017 at 9:41 AM, n2wdw said: Here's a magazine that fits the Lady In White collection. It was advertised as 9.0. I plan to submit and hope it gets 9.0 but I'm not certain it will. For books like this, I think I'll ease the 9.0 requirement, with the understanding (in my head) that I will upgrade if I get the chance. Sometimes I negotiate with myself like this. Not that I'm crazy or anything. I don't remember if I ever followed up on this, so here's the follow-up. With pressing, this magazine squeaked in with a 9.0 grade. So, I didn't have to ease the requirement that books have to be at least CGC 9.0 to qualify for my Lady in White collection. @miraclemet
n2wdw
Latest Addition to the Lady In White Collection To recap, I am building a Lady in White collection. @miraclemet To be in the set, the cover has to have a gothic feel to it, with a damsel in distress wearing a flowing white dress or gown. The books have to be silver or gold, perhaps bronze, but definitely not modern. For bronze and silver my threshold is at least 9.0. I haven't decided yet for gold. Here's the newest addition, Monsters Unleashed #8. I agonized over whether this qualifies. First, does it have a gothic feel? In the end I decided it did, with the dungeon and the monsters. Second, is her dress white? I decided that it is white, and it's only the darkness of the dungeon that's giving it a greyish hue. Third, does the cover satisfy the "flowing white dress or gown" requirement? I decided I did -- you'll note the bottom of her dress is ripped. So I convinced myself that the dress started as "flowing" and then got ripped. You might think I can talk myself into anything when it comes to this collection, but I've rejected some comics where the dress is clearly blue and where the girl is the aggressor rather than a damsel in distress. n2wdw
GI Jane GI Jane ran only 10 issues from 1953-1954. I only have 1 issue at the moment. Here it is: Recently I've picked up some foreign editions. The one from Mexico is called Muchas Gracias. What I like about these comics is they have covers never before published. Here are the 2 I have so far. The cover for the one above is from an interior panel: I also have this Australian edition. Here, though, the cover is from #9 of the US edition. BTW, did you see the recent auction of 5 gd/vg copies of GI Jane, that closed this past Sunday on Heritage? Closed at $660 (including buyer's premium). So your set (clearly much nicer than gd/vg) is worth a small fortune.
