Bill Ward and Some Cheesecake

I got this "Origin of Torchy" print from eBay recently.  I don't know who produced it or when, but it's signed by Ward.  Sometimes you wonder if the autographs you see on eBay are authentic.  My view is, why would someone fake it, at least for cheap stuff like this (I got it for $20).

Changing subjects, I'm a fan of David Nakayama.  Recently I picked up the original art for his cover of Return to Wonderland 2.

There are 82 issues total.  I'm going to budget $2000, or an average of just over $24 per comic.  My condition goal will be an average of about VG/FN.  From time to time in 2018, I'll report back on how the project is going.

Matt Baker in Manhunt

I'm fascinated by Baker art in non-comic magazines.  Here's one I recently got off eBay, Manhunt 9 from September 1953.  Baker illustrated most of the stories in this issue, but the one for "The Scrapbook" is the only one that qualifies as GGA.

That does not look like Baker to me.  I have several of the first year Manhunt issues and have found Baker illustrations in the first six issues only.  I think Baker even was given an Art Director credit in the first issue.

You may be right.  I'm going off the Amash book, but even there he puts a ? next to the credit.

Major New Matt Baker!

I've been looking for this for some time now, Tiny Tales Cinderella.  Last night I won it on eBay (thank goodness for bidnapper, as we had dinner with friends so I wasn't able to watch the auction).  This is the only copy I've ever seen for sale, and only the 2nd copy I've ever seen with my own eyes (a boardie posted his copy earlier this year).  The condition isn't great but I didn't know when I'd see a copy again so I went for it.  Demand for Baker's non-comic work isn't as high as his comics.  I ended up winning it for half my max bid.

Cool score Mike. I think I’d like it a little better if Cinderella was tied up though...

Matt Baker Debate

There's a debate going on about whether the high rise in the cost of Baker covers will ever crash.  https://www.cgccomics.com/boards/topic/125685-baker-romance/?page=385

Part of the debate is fueled by the high price obtained for TAR 42 last month.

Capture.thumb.JPG.75f7f5ad173e464794247e1eec3727f2.JPG

To compare, here's my copy.  I won my copy off eBay just last year for $400.  I got it raw and then submitted it to CGC.

5a30838fa1843_Teen-AgeRomances42CGC4.5405b.thumb.JPG.a3426801d5975420ae5b7232aa1c02a6.JPG

So, maybe the recent high price of TAR 42 ($1476) was driven up by a couple of motivated buyers.  That happens sometimes, and god bless the seller for maybe getting a premium.  By the same token, maybe I got lucky with my purchase at $400.  Then what's the FMV of TAR 42?    $400 or $1476?

I don't know.  But, the point I'm making, is classic Baker covers like TAR 42 are on a upward slope.  Maybe sometimes M is higher or lower, but either way it's positive so prices are going up.

More evidence of this are the Bakers being offered right now by Dale Roberts.  With 19 minutes to go on the first auction to close, I'm already priced out of all the auctions, and this after I put in pretty aggressive max bids (for me).

So, I think the future of Matt Baker is up and up.  At least I hope so.  As I kinda went all in on this Baker I won recently on eBay.

I see you just pulled ahead of me on the Going Steady registry set.  Why do they give a 3.0 #14 fifty points and a 3.0 #10 only twenty-two?!!  #14 is WAY easier to find!

Sorry, just venting...  Congratulations on the number one set - for now....

I agree with you on that.  The points on Bakers make so sense.
