Sony Sets ‘Men In Black’ Spinoff For Summer, 2019; ---script by ‘Iron Man’ Team Holloway & Marcum

The Men in Black are back. Sony Pictures has fast tracked a spinoff of its billion-dollar alien franchise. The studio today will stake out a May 17, 2019, release date for an untitled film that has a ---script by Matt Holloway & Art Marcum, the writers of Iron Man and Transformers: The Last Knight.

Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones aren’t expected to reprise, but the film acknowledges and builds on the world they inhabited. Holloway & Marcum have scripted a contemporary sci-fi pic about the black-clad secret force that protects earth from the alien scum of the universe, focusing on new characters chasing villains that put the picture on more of a global scale than the two previous films. The ambition is akin to the way that Jurassic World rebooted and expanded that franchise. The MiB spinoff film is being produced by Walter F. Parkes and Laurie MacDonald and executive produced by Steven Spielberg. They are actively involved in meeting with top directors right now and expect to land one quickly.

Parkes confirmed the Men in Black spin-off. “It’s so rare to get to the end of the ---script and know you’re holding a movie in your hands, but Art and Matt have written a spinoff that somehow is true to the core of the MiB world and yet expands the franchise to a fresh new place,” he said.

‘Men in Black’ Spinoff Draws ‘Iron Man’ Writers, Sets Release Date

Quote

Sony Pictures is fast-tracking its “Men in Black” spinoff, setting the sci-fi pic to bow on May 17, 2019. Sources also tell Variety that “Iron Man” scribes Matt Holloway and Art Marcum will pen the -script.

Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones will not reprise their roles in the film, which is meant to launch a new franchise with fresh talent involved. Sony had originally planned on combining the “Men and Black” and “21 Jump Street” franchises, but have since tabled that idea.

“John Wick: Chapter 3” is the only other film so far debuting on May 17, with Disney’s “Aladdin” — starring Smith — opening the following week.

Walter F. Parkes and Laurie MacDonald are producing with Steven Spielberg exec producing. David Beaubaire is overseeing the pic for Sony.

Goofy comicbookmovie.com got the new release date wrong. And why the date change.

There’s Been A Date Change for MEN IN BLACK Spin-Off

Quote

Those sharp dressed saviors of mankind will be making their return next year but not on the date we expected. Of course I am speaking about the Men in Black but I am not speaking about agents Kay and Jay, who were played by Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith. The untitled spin-off film that is being executive produced by Steven Spielberg, who was a part of the original three films, is set to hit theaters June 14, 2019 after being moved from May 19 to avoid the bloody mayhem that will be John Wick: Chapter Three.

There is little to no information on this new Men in Black but we do know that Jay and Kay will be mentioned in the film though there is nothing about them making an appearance or who the movie will focus on. One thing is for sure, we will get to see some cool aliens.

This conceivably will not have anything to do with the one-rumored crossover film that would merge the Men in Black and 21 Jump Street franchises, bringing Channing Tatum’s Jenko and Jonah Hill’s Schmidt into the MIB universe as new recruits.

This untitled Men In Black spin-off was written by Matt Holloway and Art Marcum (Iron Man and Transformers: The Last Knight).

F. Gary Gray in Talks to Direct ‘Men in Black’ Reboot

That Men in Black reboot and/or spinoff is definitely happening, and now Sony Pictures and Amblin have zeroed in on a director. Deadline reports that The Fate of the Furious and Straight Outta Compton filmmaker F. Gary Gray is in negotiations to direct the new Men in Black movie, which will relaunch the franchise that began with Barry Sonnenfeld’s 1997 sci-fi comedy. That movie spawned two sequels, but Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones are not expected to reprise their roles in this new film, which will effectively start fresh.

Sony had considered the idea of using this reboot as a crossover film with the 21 Jump Street franchise, and indeed James Bobin (Alice Through the Looking Glass) was in line to direct that film. The studio has now tabled the crossover idea in favor of simply making a new Men in Black movie, relaunching the franchise in the vein of Jurassic World—so a rebootquel that technically takes place in the same universe, but doesn’t feature any of the same main characters.

Matt Holloway and Art Marcum, who co-wrote Transformers: The Last Knight and Punisher: War Zone, wrote the most recent draft of the -script for the Men in Black reboot, and Sony has already set a May 17, 2019 release date for the film. With Gray in line to direct, the next step will be casting, and this thing will be in front of cameras before you know it.

Chris Hemsworth May Lead ‘Men in Black’ Spinoff as First Character Details Surface

Sony Pictures is forging ahead on that Men in Black spinoff, and it appears casting is now underway. After developing different ideas on how to proceed with the franchise, including a potential crossover with the Jump Street series, the studio settled on a hard reboot and enlisted The Fate of the Furious filmmaker F. Gary Gray to take the helm earlier this month.

Now, per THR, Chris Hemsworth is in early negotiations to star in the sci-fi action-comedy spinoff. This new story, which has a -script by Iron Man writers Matt Holloway and Art Marcum, involves a white character, a black woman, and an older man and is set in London. Hemsworth, who showcased his comedic chops tremendously well in Thor: Ragnarok, would presumably fill the “white character” role, but it’s unclear how these characters relate to each other or what kind of story is being told.

Tessa Thompson is reteaming with her Thor: Ragnarok co-star Chris Hemsworth in the new Men in Black movie.

The Hollywood Reporter reports that Thompson has signed on to join Sony's reboot of the film franchise alongside Hemsworth, with Fast & Furious director F. Gary Gray directing. Iron Man writers Matt Holloway and Art Marcum are writing the -script. The film is aiming for release on June 14, 2019.

Besides becoming an instant fan favorite with her role as Valkyrie in Thor: Ragnarok, Thompson also appeared in Alex Garland's latest science fiction movie Annihilation alongside the Thor movies' former female lead Natalie Portman. Thompson is currently filming Creed II, the boxing drama sequel in which she plays opposite Black Panther villain Michael B. Jordan. She's also set to appear in the upcoming Annapurna Pictures film Sorry to Bother You and has a significant role in the second season of Westworld on HBO this spring.

Chris Hemsworth's contract to play Thor finished with the fourth Avengers movie, though he hasn't completely ruled out the possibility of returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and his supposed return to the Star Trek franchise as Captain Kirk's father George Kirk is in doubt. The Men in Black reboot could prove to be the next big franchise move in the star's career.
