'Constantine' Animated Series First Look Released

Quote

DC has released the first footage of their brand new Constantine animated series at New York Comic Con, and it looks fantastic. The show will be coming to CW Seed, and features the return of fan-favorite Matt Ryan to the role. As you can see, the show will feature all of the supernatural craziness and demon fighting you expect, with a healthy helping of gore.

As you can see in the trailer, Constantine is as curmudgeonly as ever, but if you ask him it's all part of his charm. That charm might not get him out of this alive, but then again he's used to having his back against a wall. In this case, quite literally. The animation looks stellar, and it's delightful to hear Ryan voicing the character once again. Fans had to say goodbye to the live-action Constantine series much too soon, and it's good to have him back in the fold.

"John Constantine ... a seasoned demon hunter and master of the occult. Armed with an arcane knowledge of the dark arts and a wicked wit, he fights the good fight. With his soul already damned to hell, he’ll do whatever it takes to protect the innocent. With the balance of good and evil on the line‎, Constantine uses his skills to face the supernatural terrors that threaten our world and send them back where they belong. After that, who knows… maybe there’s hope for him and his soul after all."

CW Seed's 'Constantine' Series To Be Darker Than NBC Series

Quote

CW Seed's upcoming animated Constantine series will be darker than its live-action predecessor on NBC.

Speaking at the Television Critics Association's winter press tour (via Collider) The CW's executive vice president Peter Girardi told reporters that the latest series of the animated Arroweverse would steer a little closer to the character's roots in Vertigo's "Hellblazer" comics.

"It's Constantine, if you're familiar with the character," Girardi said. "It's Constantine from the Vertigo comic; it's dark. Darker than the show."

Constantine will follow the iconic and fan-favorite character of John Constantine, played by Matt Ryan who is reprising his role from the NBC series which ran from 2014-2015 and, like CW Seed's other animated Arrowverse offerings has ties to the network's live-action counterparts. As fans may recall, both Vixen and Freedom Fighters: The Ray have had important moments in the live-action Arrowverse this season. On Legends of Tomorrow, Kuasa (played on television by Tracy Ifeachor,) who was killed on Vixen, is resurrected by a servant of this season's big bad Mallus to create problems for the Legends -- including her grandmother, the original Vixen Amaya (Maisie Richardson-Sellers). Meanwhile The Ray (Russell Tovey) is instrumental in assisting the Arrowverse heroes escape execution by the Nazis in "Crisis on Earth-X."

As for Constantine, he has already appeared on both Arrow and Legends of Tomorrow -- and has a larger appearance when the latter show returns form midseason hiatus in February -- but Girardi explained in his talk that just how connected the animated Arrowverse will be to the live-action Arrowverse remains to be seen.

"That's yet to be determined," Girardi explained. "The first one we did was Vixen. And Vixen started out as animated. And I think we were all so happy when it did migrate into the Arrowverse, but it started out as animated first. Since then, we've figured out a little more of a strategy around it where we worked very closely with Greg [Berlanti] and Marc Guggenheim and the team there to figure out what characters are going to work, what's in [their] future plans, what we can do."

Constantine will debut on CW Seed in early 2018.

'Constantine' Animated Series Gets a Premiere Date

Quote

Fans of Matt Ryan's John Constantine have a lot to look forward to in March. Not only is the fan-favorite character returning to The CW's Legends of Tomorrow for another appearance on the time-travel superhero drama, but the Constantine animated series for CW Seed will begin streaming on March 24.

Warner Bros. TV and Warner Bros. Animation recently announced their events and panels for Anaheim's WonderCon 2018 and in addition to a question and answer session with Warner Bros. Animation's Peter Girardi, the convention is hosting the world premiere screening of the series on March 24, the same day it begins streaming on CW Seed.

The upcoming Constantine series, which will follow the iconic and fan-favorite character with Ryan reprising his role from the NBC series which ran from 2014-2015, will follow CW Seed's other animated Arrowverse offerings -- Vixen and Freedom Fighters: The Ray -- by having ties to The CW's live-action counterparts. However, the animated Constantine will also be darker than its live-action predecessor on NBC. According to Girardi, the animated series will be a bit closer to the character's Hellblazer comics roots.

"It's Constantine, if you're familiar with the character," Girardi said earlier this year. "It's Constantine from the Vertigo comic; it's dark. Darker than the show."

Matt Ryan Wants Constantine to Meet the Joker

In a recent interview with ScreenGeek, Ryan was asked if there's a specific DC villain he'd like to share the screen with. While he didn't specify which medium it would happen in, he hinted that it would be fun to see Constantine interact with The Joker, just because it's so unpredictable.

“I always wondered how Constantine would be with the Joker." Ryan revealed. "Most of the time when I think of John in a situation with the other heroes, I can kind picture what would happen. With the Joker, I don’t know. I love the way they wrote his interaction with Batman [in Justice League Dark]. There’s not a lot there in terms of dialogue, it’s just the one liners like calling him ‘Batsy’ and whatnot. Those little things. In a way, they’re kind of very similar, John and Batman/Bruce Wayne. I really like that dynamic, and what was [also] great about Justice League Dark was being able to play some of those relationships with characters that we didn’t get to on the show – even though it’s just a voice thing. It was really great to explore those dynamics. I’ve just got the Joker in my head now, though.”

But as Ryan went on, he realized that Constantine and the Joker might actually see eye-to-eye in an interesting way.

“What would the first scene be if those guys get together?" Ryan added. "I think the Joker would like John Constantine. He’s a dark soul, and they could almost be friends but John’s soul kind of wouldn’t let it happen.”
