'Batman Ninja' Anime Debuts Stunning First Trailer

Quote

If you are not familiar with Batman Ninja, then you should know the film is a highly anticipated one with fans. The project was officially announced at New York Comic Con this year by Junpei Mizusaki, Takashi Okazashi, and Kazuki Nakashima. The trio shared a clip of the project with fans, ComicBook had feet on the ground to check out the clip, and you can read Cameron Bonomolo’s recap below:

In the premiere teaser trailer, Batman - in bulky Samurai-inspired armor - confronts the Joker. "A hero can do everything but kill," the villain says. The criminal clown has a spectral feel to him, looking as insane and as scary as ever - like Ryuk's demented cousin.

The animation is rich, fluid and colorful. Despite the Japanese twist, your favorite characters are easily recognizable. It's a brazen new take on the Dark Knight that - going from the tease - just might offer some of the best fight scenes in the caped crusader's storied history.

The crew assembled on stage were sure to keep details close to the chest, but it was apparent by all this was a project to be excited about. Okazaki and Mizusaki, who revealed they were approached by Warner Bros. with the idea, said they're lifelong Batman fans who were excited to present the caped crusader in a way he's never been seen before - complete with action sequences they hope will excite fans.

“There’s a fight scene in this that might be the best fight scene I’ve seen in animation anywhere,” Miereanu said.

When Warner Bros. releases the film next year, the Blu-ray will include both the subtitled original Japanese version as well as the version with performances recorded in English. Chu and Garcia, who were responsible for the English --script, said translating into another language didn't come easy:

“It was extremely difficult,” Chu said. “But we have a long history of working with Japanese animation, with anime. But Warner Bros. very much left the filmmakers alone in making this movie, so what you’re going to see is something that’s authentically anime. And when they came to us, we made it authentically Batman.”

FORBES.COM: The New 'Batman Ninja' Anime Movie Looks Exactly As Awesome As It Sounds

batman_ninja_trailer-1200x675.jpg?width=

Quote

It seems that the Dark Knight will be transported back to ancient Japan to fight the Joker in a new anime movie called Batman Ninja and, yes, it looks like it could be rather magnificent.

Much of the lore behind Batman ties both directly and indirectly into the stealthy world of ninjas. The Nolan movies explored this quite overtly and it has been somewhat of an underlying theme within the overarching Batman mythos for a while. So to have a new anime wrap its arms around that ninja setup is fantastic to see.

In any case, for a project that has reportedly been in production for three years, Batman Ninja is looking very good indeed and will be finally released early next year.

The studio behind this is Kamikaze Douga and they have a solid list of credits behind them, especially when it comes to CG animation. They have also worked on some of the JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure anime over the years and those are known to be similarly ostentatious in a visual sense.

'Batman Ninja' Animated Movie Gets A Rating

The first trailer for Batman Ninja premiered last year, and fans of both Batman and anime have been curious as to how the famous hero would translate into the medium. They've been especially curious to see if the anime medium would allow Batman to get a little darker.

After reading about the film's official rating, Batman Ninja is going to be dark but not necessarily full of blood and gore. The film has been officially confirmed for a PG-13 rating for "for sequences of violence and action, and for some suggestive material."

You can read the rating description below:

TITLE: Batman Ninja (2018)
RATING: PG-13
CERTIFICATE #: 51428
REASON: Rated PG-13 for sequences of violence and action, and for some suggestive material.
DISTRIBUTOR: Warner Bros. Pictures
ALTERNATE TITLES: Ninja Batman
OTHER: Animated

If you're thinking a PG-13 rating wouldn't allow for good samurai content, director Junpei Miyazaki said that "PG-13, it’s a little hard to show limbs flying,” Mizusaki said. “Maybe just imagine it in your head. There are some scenes that come a little close to that.” So there will be creative workarounds for the film.

IGN

"Batman Ninja takes everything great about the masked vigilante and twists it in a way we’ve never seen, creating a visual marvel unlike any other Batman animated movie before it. DC tried something new by bringing in visionary Japanese animators to offer a refreshing take on one of the company’s most beloved characters, and the finished product not only built upon the great adaptations that have come before, but surpassed them."

"I know I’m the DC guy, but how many variations of Batman can one man endure? And I guess the answer is, at least one more. Because I soon found myself swept up in this amazing new Anime Batman world, and I totally enjoyed every minute of it. The story was great, with many of the anime tropes that we’ve come to expect and love, mixed in with classic Batman elements, that make Ninja Batman both exotic and familiar. And the artwork and character designs make this a visual work of art. – I saw the english version, and the vocal talent was also top notch, But there’s a Japanese version too, with subtitles. If you really want the full anime experience."

GameSpot

"Batman Ninja is worth watching for its aesthetic alone. Okazaki's character designs are as strong as ever, although the exaggerated female proportions on characters like Catwoman, Harley, and Poison Ivy look somewhat out of place in this setting. That doesn't detract too much, though, and overall it's fun simply to see how these various characters have incorporated elements of the setting into their typical costumes and disguises. Batman even briefly dresses as a visiting missionary, shaving a conspicuous bat into the top of his head. It's ridiculous, but that's the point--and Batman Ninja is surprisingly funny, using the clash of settings and characters for humor whenever possible."

Finally got to see this as a rental last night (blu-ray is not out yet).

Batman, Nightwing, Red Hood, Robin, Red Robin and Catwoman take on all the traditional villains as part of a time-traveling story back to Feudal Japan. But where this story is more wild than the average Batman animated movie is they blend in influences from Anime such as giant robots, talking little pet creatures and shogun lore. As nutty as it sounds, it all comes together into a very unique storyline and character changes.

The bigger of the Big Bads is The Joker, but there are enough additional villains this is like an Arkham Asylum breakout story. And with Bruce Wayne, he is forced to learn the ways of the times he now lives without all his technology to assist him. By the way, the animation is definitely a big plus to complement the story as has been demonstrated in the trailers. Some really gorgeous scenes.

I liked it! The third act is strange. But it is still fun.
