Is pressing a standard practice when having a comic graded?

I am wondering if my recent submission to CGC with the addition of a quick press (for the first time ever) is a smart investment in the process?  This forum seems to agree that pressing is a real good thing.  Is this why so many Bronze age and older are receiving such a high grade?  I have often wondered how some of these older comics that I have just don't seem to measure up to a grade over 8.5 without pressing.  Am I slow to grasp that even a quick press is just a 'darn good idea' if I'm going to the expense of having it graded?  Thanks for any responses!
