Press for Higher Grade? Marvel Spotlight #5 8.5
0

13 posts in this topic

I purchased this Marvel Spotlight #5 a number of months back that was already graded 8.5 by CGC.  I've been going back and forth on deciding if I should take a chance on CPR'ing as I see plenty of wave and some dimples that would easily be corrected with a press along with the itty bitty crinkle on the back at the top.  I see three very minor spin ticks and two major.  Is that enough to keep it from going to an 9.0 with a good press.  I can't stand to see waves in already graded books, but won't invest in a CPR either if there isn't a chance for a higher grade.

I appreciate your thoughts and guidance.

Do you have the graders notes?  This would be a crucial aspect of any decision when CPR'ing a book.  If there aren't any additional defects outside of what's visible then I wouldn't have it pressed.  The fanned CBC below the top staple is fairly substantial but the rest of the book looks great.  If that fanned CBC were missing you'd have a 9.2 on your hands.

Grader Notes:

Hard to tell from your photo, but I am detecting possible rust on the bottom staple with beginnings of migration?

I would want it regraded  if I were buying it, it might be a 7.0- 7.5

Definitely not a CPR candidate, but it might give you peace of mind to know if you have 7.0 with an 8.5 label

I’ll send add a clear pic of staples soon, but didn’t see any issue.

I don’t think that’s rust.  Looks like maybe some staple shift has caused the holes to ellipse.  Would be nice to get a close up pic though.

In this case the grader's notes are telling you that the creasing mentioned is causing the 8.5 . Even though there are other flaws, they are not mentioned because it doesn't matter. Those left center, color breaking creases are the problem and they will not be removed with a press. IMO, be happy with an 8.5 as it appears to be a generous grade. I would not be surprised to see it come back next time as an 8.0 . Sorry.

Thanks for the input all.  I'll leave it as is.  Here are better pics of the staples.

The staples look fine, in fact they are in excellent shape. It's a cool book and presents well. Judging by the location of that creasing area it was probably like that off the shelves from 'customers' bending and flipping through the stack. Look at it this way, without that flaw, think of how more expensive the book would have been. If the flaw bothers you, it should be an easy book to sell. Otherwise, enjoy it. You have an 8.5 book that presents like a 9.0 .

It does look that you may have an "old new" case without the inner well, and that could be causing the waviness in the book. If so, then having it reholdered by CGC, which they should still be doing for free because of the problems with that case, should help the eye appeal.

Thank you for the suggestion mysterio.  Is CGC offering to replace the "old new" case for no cost?  I didn't know they were doing that.

I believe they still will. Give them a call and let them know that you’d like it reholdered into the slab design with the inner well. They’ll confirm that the serial number corresponds to a sub during that period, then walk you through it.
