Every January I think I am not going to improve my collection as I don't want to spend too much money on art and every December I check my bank account to find that I have spent too much money in art.

2017 has been a little bit different: some very good sales, one great buy and immediate flip (it happens) mean three great pieces in my collection! (IMHO, of course).

Kelly Jones - Sandman 24 panel page
http://www.comicartfans.com/gallerypiece.asp?piece=1439370

Jamie Hewlett - Tank Girl (Deadline 25) panel page
http://www.comicartfans.com/gallerypiece.asp?piece=1434115

Milo Manara - Gli Occhi di Pandora three strips for one panel page
http://www.comicartfans.com/gallerypiece.asp?piece=1391492

If you are curious, feel free to read my comments, they are very detailed!
Comments and votes are more than welcome! ;-)

It was a much more active year, art-collecting-wise, than I would have expected 52 weeks ago. I always think of 2010 and 2014 as the best years for my collection, but this year gives them a run for their (my) money.

Here are my Entries for 2017.

Barry Windsor Smith - Conan #14, Page 3 - A beautifully-laid out peak-period BWS Conan page with faceless assailants, horses with beaks and giant birds attacking.

http://www.comicartfans.com/LowryPiece.asp?Piece=9313

Bernie Wrightson - Swamp Thing #6, Page 24 - Bernie inking Bernie on the series that will always be fondly associated with him. Beautiful expressions, fantastic detail and amazing storytelling on this 11-panel page.

http://www.comicartfans.com/LowryPiece.asp?Piece=9310

Bernie Wrightson - Swamp Thing #6, Page 25 - It's probably bad form to post two pages from the same artist and the same issue in the same category, but come on… it's Bernie's Swamp Thing! Very different than the previous page, this one has big panels and a robot fight. Bernie was the best!

http://www.comicartfans.com/LowryPiece.asp?Piece=9311

Boris Vallejo - Warrior Woman - A wonderful watercolor over pen and ink illustration. This is a detailed preliminary from 1978 for a piece that was never done. I like the looseness of the drawing in combination with some spots of realistic detail and  Boris' marvelous soft colors. Rare full name signature. Warning NSFW.

http://www.comicartfans.com/LowryPiece.asp?Piece=9309

Joe Doolin - Planet Comics #24 - Mars Splash Page - A few years ago, I was lucky enough to visit Jon Berk and see his amazing collection of comics and art. One of my very favorite pieces of art in his collection was this Doolin Planet splash page. The detail is astounding. I decided to take a shot at it in last year's ComicConnect auction of Jon's collection, and was lucky enough to win it. My first piece of comic book original art -- bought at HoustonCon, summer of 1978 -- was a Planet Comics page, so I've always had a fondness for Fiction House art.

http://www.comicartfans.com/LowryPiece.asp?Piece=9312

Runners up:

Joe Kubert - Brave and Bold #44, Page 28 - This was a lock until the other Swamp Thing page turned up in November. Any other year… Great Kubert action with Hawkgirl and Hawkman battling animal-looking aliens.

http://www.comicartfans.com/gallerypiece.asp?piece=1376350

John Bolton - Kull Page from Bizarre Adventures #26 - Again, almost any other year, this page from Bolton's masterpiece would easily make the list.

http://www.comicartfans.com/gallerypiece.asp?piece=1385364

Jack Davis - Aces High Page - Perfect Davis… any other year…

http://www.comicartfans.com/gallerypiece.asp?piece=1411862

Russ Heath - Rocketeer Movie Adaptation Page - Everything you could want in a page from this book, including the cover shot.

http://www.comicartfans.com/gallerypiece.asp?piece=1416382

Carl "Bunny" Schultze - 1905 Foxy Grandpa Sunday Strip - Possibly one of the earliest surviving examples of this comic strip. Found at an antique fair.

http://www.comicartfans.com/gallerypiece.asp?piece=1385291

Jim Mooney - Thundercats #5 Page - A perfect example of Mooney's distinctive style.

http://www.comicartfans.com/gallerypiece.asp?piece=1385355

Darwyn Cooke - Jonah Hex #50 Page - Wonderful western mayhem!

http://www.comicartfans.com/gallerypiece.asp?piece=1398482

Leslie Cabarga - If I Had a Million Splash Page - Won all four pages from this story at HA. Huge and beautiful in person. So fun to look at!  Out of all the great art I've been lucky enough to get all year, this may be the one I enjoy the most.

A banner year for P. Craig Russell collecting! So here are 5 treasures that found their way to my collection:

Doctor Strange 46 2nd story p. 1 Michael Golden and P. Craig Russell http://www.comicartfans.com/LowryPiece.asp?Piece=9315

An iconic (well maybe) splash/introduction page from Michael Golden and P. Craig Russell. Doctor Strange and Clea take a quiet moment's peace.

Doctor Strange Annual 1 p. 26 (1976) P. Craig Russell http://www.comicartfans.com/LowryPiece.asp?Piece=9318

This has been one of my collecting goals for a very long time, a page from PCR's Doctor Strange Annual.

Marvel Premiere 7 p. 14 (1973) P. Craig Russell http://www.comicartfans.com/LowryPiece.asp?Piece=9316

One of the best pages from this issue. It took me quite a while to pry this from its last owner but worth it.

Silver Surfer by P. Craig Russell- Unreleased 1987 Marvel poster design http://www.comicartfans.com/LowryPiece.asp?Piece=9319

The  unpublished "brother" to the 1986 Marvel Press Poster #5 "Scarlet Witch."

And because man cannot live by "Russell" alone :

Sky Masters October 27, 1958 Jack Kirby and Wally Wood http://www.comicartfans.com/LowryPiece.asp?Piece=9317

This strip is from the first adventure of "Sky Masters" when he discovers the danger of "space raptures." I also love the Von Braun space shuttles cruising in orbit.

It was a year of highs and lows for me but art-wise, I did okay. Here are my five- very hard to choose just 5, let me tell you!

1- Avengers 100 page 2- (Barry Windsor Smith):   This was a grail book for me as a kid- back in the 1980s, it was a bit more difficult getting back issues where i lived.  I'm glad my Aunt was finally able to track it down for me!  The first 6 pages of this book are sheer magic as they are all BWS.

http://www.comicartfans.com/LowryPiece.asp?Piece=9336

2- Avengers 195 cover (George Perez and  Dan Green):  From the Task Master Trilogy and with more ants a can of Raid can handle,  here Ant Man and Yellow Jacket are off to save the Wasp. Typical insane Perez detail.

http://www.comicartfans.com/LowryPiece.asp?Piece=9337

3- Dr Strange 1 page 2 (Frank Brunner and Giordano):  From the 1st book my brother ever bought. What a great time to start. After the rather stressful and trippy Siseneg  storyline, Clea attempts to provide some levity for a very serious Doc.  Giordano's inks look lovely on Brunner's pencils.

http://www.comicartfans.com/LowryPiece.asp?Piece=9339

4- New Teen Titans 4 pages 2 + 3 DPS  (George Perez and Romeo Tanghal)-  This was the book that made me decide to give DC a change and the Teen Titans was the first DC title added to my pull list at my local comics shop.  I followed Perez over from Marvel and never looked back and was able to enjoy many, many fine stories involving the DC stable of characters.

http://www.comicartfans.com/LowryPiece.asp?Piece=9340

5. JLA/Avengers page 5 unpublished  (George Perez pencils):  From the infamous unpublished book- Ah, what might have been. I enjoyed the book that was eventually published some 20 years later but I would have loved to have seen this as it was intended. My first page from this book with Avengers on it!

It has been great to see everyone's 2017 acquisitions so far.  2017 was a good art year for me, dominated to a great extent by one comic.

Captain America #121, page 1, by Gene Colan and Joe Sinnott   http://www.comicartfans.com/LowryPiece.asp?Piece=9110

The collector who had been trying to put this book back together for years consigned his pages to Mitch Itkowitz.  I nabbed the first batch of pages to be listed in Mitch's site, including this page-one splash.  However, I missed one page, only to find it several months later at NYCC in Albert Moy's booth.  I now have 15 pages from this book.  (Greg G., let's talk about your page sometime....)

Marvel Team-Up #60, page 26, by John Byrne and Dave Hunt   http://www.comicartfans.com/LowryPiece.asp?Piece=9108

I actually bought this page in 2014, when I first met Dave Hunt, but I didn't post it until Dave passed away in March 2017.  I had been working with an autobiography with Dave for the past three years, so this page means a lot to me.  (And the book will be done soon!)

Marvel Team-Up #83, page 26, by Sal Buscema and Steve Leialoha   http://www.comicartfans.com/LowryPiece.asp?Piece=9111

I was lucky to have quick reflexes when Romitaman listed this page in an update.  I think the Buscema/Leialoha pages from this storyline are beautiful, and they are pretty rare.

Amy + Jordan comic strip, by Mark Beyer   http://www.comicartfans.com/gallerypiece.asp?piece=1406900

I love Mark Beyer's intricately depressing comic strips and was very happy to pick up some great examples in 2017.  This strip features no psychological or physical abuse of the main characters but still manages to end on a down note.

Marvel World Dr. Strange's Sanctum Sanctorum production drawing by Dave Hunt   http://www.comicartfans.com/LowryPiece.asp?Piece=9117

Dave gave me this drawing during my last visit with him.  He was proud of his work on this much sought-after toy from the late-1970s.

Happy collecting, and good health, to everyone in 2018!  Best, Lee

2017 was a much different year for me than usual. I bought a lot less art and hardly spent any money this year. (comparatively to previous years lol) I usually get over 100 pieces a year between sketches, published art, and sketch cards, but this year was less than half of that. Still, I got some serious, quality pieces for my particular tastes.

After an unexpected career change last April, I pretty much stopped buying art for the rest of the year. But I started 2017 with a mission to specifically get myself an Art Adams cover, a McFarlane Spider-man page, a Luke vs Vader Star Wars commission painting by Dave Dorman, and more art by Travis Charest. I am happy to say that despite all the challenges of everything this past year, all those happened for me!

The first 3 happened very early in the year, as I worked large trade/cash deals for the McFarlane Spidey page and Art Adams cover, as well as ordered and paid for the Star Wars painting from Dorman, before I lost my job in April. Then I met a nice local collector who bought the last of Travis Charest's Wildstorm art in a bulk deal and he reached out to me with 3 incredible pieces, and I spent the summer paying for those with waves of art sales of my own. And as often happens in this hobby, one thing leads to another and around the end of summer I happened to meet former Wildstorm inker Tom WcWeeney on Facebook when I shared one of my new Travis pieces in a FB group and he still had 2 dream pages I always wanted by J Scott Campbell (Danger Girl) and Travis Charest (Wildcats), respectively. So we worked a deal for both and I sold some art and managed to get those as well. But beyond these 8 pieces, I mostly just got small sketches from some of my regular indie artists.

So ironically it was both a great year for me with the hobby and a terrible year, in that I had to turn down art left and right and painfully pass on so much. But I got some of my biggest grail pieces to date, so it wasn't that bad I guess. :)

I am showing an image here of all 5 of my "Best Of" pieces rather than individual links, but my Lowry has large scans and there are lengthy descriptions in each of the posts elaborating on specifically how I got them all, so I still recommend checking it out and here is a link to my Lowry. http://www.comicartfans.com/mylowry.asp?gsub=1358

Honorable mentions go to the other 3 Travis Charest pieces as well, as they are all pretty significant and it was tough to only choose one of the 4 new Travis pieces to be included in the Best Of. So I am showing those below as well below. These include a great Wildcats page featuring the origin/1st Appearance of Maxine "Ladytron" Manchester, a beautiful card art piece of Rainmaker from Gen13, and a tight finished pencil pinup of Grunge from Gen13 which gives a rare glimpse into the intricate pencils Travis was doing in 1994, as they are uninked.

Here are my entries.  Big thanks of course to Brian Peck, Bill Cox, and all those who organize this and make it possible.

It was quite hard to pick my 5 entries this year, it felt harder than previous years, but here they are:

1. JR JR Daredevil Man Without Fear CoverLowry Link

And it's the Kingpin one not the Elektra one I also got :nyah: I like the Kingpin one better despite many friend thinking I am crazy.  I thoroughly enjoyed this series.  While I am quite happy with the panel page I already had, I felt that I had to act to buy when the cover became available.

2. Brian Bolland Judge Dredd CoverLowry Link

I enjoy the early Judge Dredd issues, especially the Bolland ones, but I had to look up who mushroom face was.  But hey, I finally have  Bolland cover!

3. Tim Sale Dark Victory Half SplashLowry Link

Thoroughly enjoyed both Long Halloween and Dark Victory.  Quite pleased with my existing examples but was glad to add another great one.

4. Ron Lim & Al Milgrom Infinity War page with Thanos, Warlock, and more Lowry link

This was actually the hardest to pick, I had to pick this over other great panel pages.  Like many I enjoyed Infinity Gauntlet but not the rest, but this one just has the same look and feel and I could not resist

5. Josh Middleton Scarlett of GI Joe CommissionLowry Link

I rarely get commissions, but I always wanted a Josh Middleton Scarlett for my theme so I jumped at the chance and boy, it's so hard to get something well beyond my expectations but I did!

And now the honourable mentions that were almost picked but ultimately were not:

1. Walt Simonson X-Factor page - Thought this was a best of entry for sure when I got it, but as they say, you never know!

2. Kilian Plunkett Red Son page with Wonder Woman vs. Batmankoff battle - I love Red Son, it pained me not to include this, but I guess it showed how great a year I had!

3. Tim Sale Catwoman: When In Rome battle page - Any other year this too would be a no brainer entry for e!

4. Gary Frank Hulk vs. Wolverine Convention Sketch - My best convention sketch this year and I didn't even attend it! It's great to have friends in this hobby

5. Matt Wagner Edsel Sketch - The colours just pop! even after all these years!

Thanks for looking.  Happy collecting everyone!

Malvin

After 15 years on the boards and 10 years on CAF, Brian's enthusiasm made me activate my Lowry for the first time, I'm a pretty low key collector and don't put everything on CAF, and when I do I rarely post about it, but I've decided to be a little bit ore pro-active from now on and am on board for the first time :hi:

Anyway, I only put up two pieces... slowly working up to 2020 when I might dare to put up...gulp... 5 of them.

Anyway hope these two put a smile on a few faces somewhere out there.

As always, I look forward to this event, if for other reason than to see all of the great art that I somehow missed because I was wasting my time with my family, or working, or some such silliness.

I don’t know that I thought about it when I was buying this past year, but I actually focused on two artists and not surprisingly four of my Top 5 are from those two.  To cut to the chase, my entries are as follows:

Published Covers:

Brave and the Bold by Nick Cardy – Batman and Deadman, what more do you really need to say??  I loved this story.  As I’m hopeful you all know, Deadman would usually take control of someone’s body without any problems.  But, this was Batman.  And, given that Deadman wasn’t used to being in such a highly tuned body, he almost succeeds in getting Batman killed.  Great story and great cover.

Link:  http://cafurl.com?i=23135

Published Splashes, pin ups:

Hawk and Dove #1 by Steve Ditko – Hawk and Dove first appeared in Showcase 75, and was a true product of the 60’s.  Two brothers, imbued with the powers of two deities; one a pacifist, and one a fighter.  That allowed the characters to have long discussions about the war, fighting against “the man”, and how much the older generation didn’t understand the younger generation.  Ditko was a co-creator of Hawk and the Dove, and put a lot of love into these issues.  This DPS has so much Ditko, and I don’t know if I can think of many other Ditko double page splashes.  So happy to have this one.

Link::  http://cafurl.com?i=23136

Published Interior pages :

Strange Tales by Steve Ditko and George Bell – Ditko Doctor Strange.  Doesn’t get much better than this.  Strange facing off against Mordo with the Ancient One’s life hanging in the balance.  Ditko’s work on Doctor Strange (another character that he co-created) was special.  Ditko’s time at Marvel was comparatively short, and his Spider-man and Doctor Strange work were done at his peak powers.

Link:   http://cafurl.com?i=23137

Published Strip art:

Terry and the Pirates by Milt Caniff – I’m relatively new to the Caniff train, but I’ve fallen for it like a ton of bricks.  This piece is pure magic, as Caniff focuses on Burma in a (certainly for newspapers in the 40’s) super sexy strip.  There are a lot of great Terry and the Pirates strips out there, but his Burma strips are just wonderful.

Link:  http://cafurl.com?i=23138

Published/Unpublished Other:

Miss Lace from Male Call by Milt Caniff – Yep, another Caniff piece.  But, this one is different.  It’s not from the syndicated Terry and the Pirates strip.  Instead, it’s from “Male Call,” a strip published only in military newspapers.  Caniff created this special strip for the boys overseas during WWII and, given the audience, he was able to make it a little more racy.  A key character was Miss Lace, and this was a Christmas specialty piece.

As always thanks to Brian and Bill for putting this together!!

I will post instruction on where and how to go about voting for the Best of before voting day.
