Cameron owned the 80’s much like John Carpenter did. I hate to say it but I’m not looking forward to any projects by either of them. Avatar was an amazing visual spectacle that almost fooled me into thinking it was a good movie. Poor writing, rehashed story and bad dialogue which was surprising coming from the guy that made Terminator/Aliens/Abyss, movies I have rewatched countless times.

If the Internet is to be believed, pretty much everyone and their sister signed up for Disney+ and began binging their childhood favorites (and/or the first episode of The Mandalorian) yesterday. In terms of what’s available, the service (which notched ten million subscribers thus far) is pretty impressive, successfully branding itself as the one-stop-shop for several generations of nostalgia as well as the home of three of the biggest theatrical properties (Star Wars, Avatar and the MCU). If the “trending” section is to be believed, then The Simpsons has been the most-watched item thus far, with Moana and The Mandalorian right behind it. Of note, Avatar was right between Frozen and Avengers: Endgame on the trending tab, while it is the first movie offered under the “hit movies” section. As such, yesterday wasn’t just the launch day for Disney+, it was the unofficial start of the Avatar 2 marketing campaign.

 

James Cameron made a big announcement just before Terminator: Dark Fate crashed, noting that Avatar would indeed be available as a launch day title. It was a reminder that, aside from the Marvel, Star Wars and related Disney movies and TV shows that would be available on day one, Disney+ would also be the streaming home to the biggest overseas grosser of all time. Partially thanks to $619 million in China alone (Avatar earned $208 million in 2009/2010 on 10% as many available theaters), Avengers: Endgame passed the $2.789 billion global cume of James Cameron’s 2009/2010 3-D sci-fi action fantasy to become the biggest movie of all time in raw global grosses. That was good for Disney and Marvel, but a slight wound to Avatar 2, as Disney can no longer use the whole “sequel to the biggest movie ever” blurb in their marketing.

 

Avengers: Endgame sold slightly fewer tickets in North America than Avatar, earning $858 million domestic which was just below the adjusted-for-inflation $870 million gross ($760 million in 2009/2010) of the James Cameron flick. To be fair, Avatar sold far more of its tickets in 3-D, and it also didn’t have anywhere near the current level of movie-going competition (streaming, VOD, Redbox, social media, YouTube, etc.) that a new biggie like Avengers: Endgame faced. And even if we note that Avengers 4 needed a ridiculous China gross (+71% from Infinity War’s $359 million gross in 2018) to get past Avatar, it’s still the only movie that got within even $720 million of it (Star Wars: The Force Awakens earned $2.068 billion in 2015/2016) save for, obviously, James Cameron’s own Titanic. It was a relatively fair fight and both sides humbly accepted the new status quo.
