Just saw this (because I had extra tickets that needed to be used) and I liked it. I think the hate for this is people are trying to make sense of things happening in this film( some kinda Star wars rules..) but it is more like Akira Toriyama stuff. So Palpatine or sith can create massive space vessel via force/magic or whatever.. well who cares it looks cool. Also is it more insane than the force, force heal, sith lighting or going in to light speed or in this light speed jumping? :D

This. The wife and I saw it last night and we both loved it.

another awful weekend ($15MM), $510MM-$515MM max US finish.  Unless Int'l holds much, much better no chance to hit $1.1BB WW; $250MM less than TLJ, $1BB less than TFA. May sneak into top 10 of Deadline's most profitable of 2019, but barely.

You’re wrong about audience reaction to The Last Jedi. That movie was as divisive a movie as there’s ever been. And dislike for the movie wasn’t limited to 40 year-old white dudes on this board.
At the center of excitement over this new SW trilogy was the return of Luke Skywalker. It was great seeing Leila, Han, and Chewie but we all really wanted to see Luke. That last shot in FA was the ultimate last panel cameo app. teaser.

However, when Luke tosses his light saber over his shoulder at the start of LJ, that essentially ruined the remaining two hours of the movie and maybe the rest of the trilogy for at least half of the movie’s audience. Sure, some folks, such as kids, probably didn’t care that this movie was telling us that Luke, the hero of a generation, had become a cowardly milk-chugging jerk, but a lot of people did care and weren’t happy about it. Star Wars fandom isn’t limited to a hardcore few. It’s mainstream. Sure, some liked LJ, but the mass hatred/dislike for the movie was real.

And you’re also wrong about general audience reaction to Rise of Skywalker.  Try asking a lot of people who weren’t passionate about LJ’s deconstructionist story elements how they felt about ROS and they’ll tell you they liked it. Unlike Last Jedi, ROS wasn’t depressing and it redeemed Luke Skywalker as a hero. Just because you feel a certain way doesn’t mean everybody feels that way, too.

Absolutely.  TLJ will overwhelmingly be known as the weakest entry by fans in general.

Which is a shame.  TLJ was at least well premised, the execution was just abysmal.

ROS was slapped together from the vantage point of “We give up. Here, watch these shiny objects from the ‘80s that we hastily threw together, and give us some money.”

Rule number one is to know your critic , most of them are paid to make favorable reviews , very few critics are even 90% truthful imo

so it is unusual that the critics are critical lol this time

And it is shocking that this is a Disney and Star Wars production. The latest...

I think someone got a partial Disneyland coupon when a 2.0/5 is considered FRESH. :insane:

Yeah, two of those rotten reviews above are mad at ROS for not continuing Rian Johnson’s “brilliant” story direction in Last Jedi, mainly that Rey wasn’t a nobody and that Luke really wasn’t a cowardly jerk running away from trouble. Agenda, anyone?

Selective sensitivity to reviews, anyone?

It just wasn't a good movie. Fun at times, yes. But the editing kills it. There's no time for the story to.breath. And some major plot points are left unexplained. I think the behind the scenes story about the making of this trilogy will be more interesting than the movies themselves.

This ignores that it was Abrams who had Luke run away from the war and in hiding -- his idea, clearly articulated *and shown* in TFA.

Johnson didn't contradict it, he simply played out that story thread. Also:

Well here’s what Abrams had to say about Last Jedi and Rian Johnson’s story direction...C8648672-2EAA-4D9D-965C-CB8CB9CDC605.thumb.jpeg.a1880f0178a1de1796ffa9d91528015d.jpeg
It was obvious to me in FA that Abrams had Luke on the island for noble purposes and was on a sort of mission(as hinted at in Rey’s vision of the Jedi texts) , and this played out in ROS.

Is Luke hiding on Ahch-To from Kylo Ren and the First Order all that different from Obi-Wan hiding on Tatooine or Yoda hiding on Dagobah from Palpatine and the Empire?  Not sure why we'd be expecting Luke to be more resourceful at solo'ing a galactic empire than past Jedi masters were.
