BIRDS OF PREY starring Margot Robbie (2020?)

So this is the third Harley Quinn-involved project WB is feeling out to see which moves forward outside of Suicide Squad 2. Now after seeing how their project selection process works (share potential movie in development, and gauge response), you can see why the new WB lead is working to change this.

Warner Bros. working on ‘Birds of Prey’, not ‘Gotham City Sirens’ for Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn

It looks like Gotham City Sirens is officially dead. Last month Margot Robbie said that she was working on a new movie featuring Harley Quinn and her girl friends that wasn’t Gotham City Sirens, and today The Wrap has more details.

According to The Wrap, Warner Bros. is working on three movies that feature Harley Quinn. The first is the most obvious, Suicide Squad 2, which is expected to go into production later this year. The cast already appears to be training for it.

The next is Birds of Prey. The Wrap says that Transformers spinoff Bumblebee writer Christina Hodson is writing the --script. Apparently Margot Robbie is a big fan of the Birds of Prey comics. This lines up with what she said in an interview last month about a secret Harley Quinn movie she was working on. This could be a great opportunity to feature Batgirl as well.

Finally, the Joker vs. Harley movie is still in the works. Last we heard, Glenn Ficarra and John Requa were in talks to write and direct. Robbie has worked with that directing duo before — in 2015’s Focus which co-starred Will Smith, as well as 2016’s Whiskey Tango Foxtrot. She recently praised them for being involved in the Joker/Harley movie.

THE WRAP: Here Are the 3 Harley Quinn Movies in Contention at Warner Bros

Quote

Warner Bros. is weighing each of the projects as the next platform for “Robbie,” presently winning acclaim for playing Tonya Harding in “I, Tonya.” Insiders described each of the 3 films for TheWrap, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the uncertainty around where Harley will turn up next:

“Suicide Squad 2.” This would be the most obvious place for the former Dr. Harleen Quinzel to pop up. Gavin O’Connor is expected to write and possibly direct the film, which could go into production in the fall after Will Smith wraps on his clone assassin movie “Gemini Man.” One reason “Suicide Squad 2” has the best odds is that the film may serve as Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s introduction to the DC Universe as the super-villain Black Adam,  two insiders familiar with the idea told TheWrap. Charles Roven is the lead producer on “Suicide Squad 2” and welcomed Mike Deluca who recently came on board the project to produce as well.

The insiders told TheWrap that the current plan for the sequel is for the members of Suicide Squad to be tasked with tracking down a weapon of mass destruction. That weapon? Black Adam himself. The villain is best known in DC Comics as the main nemesis of superhero Shazam.

“Birds of Prey.” Insiders say Robbie has become something of a DC Comics expert since joining “Suicide Squad,” and has taken an interest in “Birds of Prey.” The film is not a Quinn solo movie, but would feature multiple female superheroes — and possibly villains — in the DC Comics universe.  Screenwriter Christina Hodson is scripting the Harley Quinn/Birds of Prey spinoff for Warner Bros. and DC Films, TheWrap has learned exclusively. DC die-hards may remember that “Birds of Prey” was also a short-lived series on The WB network in 2002-3, featuring Mia Sara as Harley.

“Joker vs Harley.” The third project in the mix is a love story between the two iconic supervillains in the vein of “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” but with The Joker and Harley. “Crazy, Stupid Love” directors Glenn Ficarra and John Requa would write as well as direct, with Jared Leto and Robbie expected to reprise their “Suicide Squad” roles as the Clown Prince of Crime and his deranged accomplice.

Last week, we reported that Bumblebee scribe Christina Hodson was writing the -script for DC’s Batgirl after finishing the -script for the Birds of Prey movie. After that news dropped, The Wrap’s Umberto Gonzalez noted on Twitter that Hodson’s Birds of Prey -script impressed Warner Bros. and DC and it was being sent out to directors.

Today, Deadline has reported that Cathy Yan will direct DC’s Birds of Prey, with Margot Robbie set to return as Harley Quinn, and the project is set for a late 2018/early 2019 production start. The film will mark the first superhero film to be directed by an Asian woman and Yan will be the third female director to join DC’s ranks after Wonder Woman’s Patty Jenkins and New Gods’ Ava DuVernay.

According to Deadline, Yan’s pitch for BOP impressed the studio enough that they offered her the film, despite only having one other film, Dead Pigs, on her resume. The publication also noted that Robbie, who is also a producer on the film, was very adamant about the studio getting a female director for the project.

For those wondering what this means for the other Harley Quinn-central projects, Robbie is still set to be in Gavin O’Conner’s Suicide Squad 2, which is rumored to start shooting this fall, while Joker & Harley and David Ayer’s Gotham City Sirens are on the backburner for the time being.

I think we could be seeing a 1, 2 punch with Harley Quinn in the same year, we know SS2 is in the works also and should start filming months after WW2 started filming and maybe SS2 can lead into Birds of Prey movie. which is also being said that the movie would introduce Batgirl before her movie.

I agree. We are most probably going to get a decent dose of Harley. And there is quite a bit of excitement about Batgirl jumping off from here.

Margot Robbie's performance of Harley Quinn in the DC Extended Universe's Suicide Squad quickly became the film's standout character, which helped pave the way for the upcoming Robbie-produced Birds of Prey film. The actress recently detailed what fans can expect from the film and explained how the key to Quinn is her dynamic with other characters.

“I pitched the idea of an R-rated girl gang film including Harley, because I was like, ‘Harley needs friends.’ Harley loves interacting with people, so don’t ever make her do a standalone film," Robbie shared with Collider. "She’s got to be with other people, it should be a girl gang. I wasn’t seeing enough girl gangs on screen, especially in the action space. So that was always a big part of it."

Harley's future in the DCEU is somewhat complicated, with a Suicide Squad sequel, a Joker origin film, and a Gotham City Sirens movie all reportedly in the works and featuring the character. Robbie's involvement as a producer seemingly makes Birds of Prey the front-runner of which project will come to fruition first. Dead Pigs director Cathy Yan is attached to direct the film.

“And then, of course, having a female director to tell that story. And giving a female director the chance to do big budget stuff," Robbie continued. "They always get ‘Here’s the tiny little film’… I was like, ‘I love action. I love action films. I’m a girl. What, are we meant to only like a specific thing’? So it was a hugely important to find a female director for this, if possible. But at the end of the day — male, female — the best director gets the job and Cathy was the best director."

Rumor: Warner Bros’ Birds of Prey Movie To Include Huntress

Gotham-Defenders-Huntress.jpg?q=50&fit=c

Omega Underground reports that one of the heroes joining Harley Quinn in Birds of Prey is the Huntress. Omega Underground believes that Huntress will be joining forces with both Harley Quinn and Batgirl. A Batgirl movie is in development, though the film may be pushed back due to Joss Whedon's decision to step down as director. This means that Batgirl could debut in Birds of Prey prior to the release of her solo film. It's currently unclear which other heroes would be featured in the upcoming all-female team-up movie. Fans shouldn't hold their breath on Catwoman, although Black Canary remains a possibility, as she's previously been the subject of casting rumors.

If the rumor surrounding Huntress proves true, Birds of Prey could give fans an intriguing mix of female heroes. It remains to be seen who Huntress, Batgirl, and Harley Quinn will be facing off with, though some suspect that the film will feature Batman's longtime adversary The Penguin as the villain.
