Loved it - thought it was even better than the movie.

I agree. I only saw the movie after watching about half the first season and while the tv show uses many of the conceits of the movie the main vampires are much better in the show.

And wifey and I are huge Jemaine Clement fans, so i expected to like the movie much more.

What We Do in the Shadows originally started as a 2014 movie, a mockumentary spoof on vampire films by directors and stars Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement. Then, earlier this year, it expanded into an FX TV series that gave further texture to this fictional world. And in a video interview with EW at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, the show’s cast and creators teased that the world will expand even more in season 2.

“The world does expand,” executive producer Paul Simms told EW. “I think in the same way that the first season of the show showed that there were other subcultures that walk amongst us that we don’t know about, I think season 2 will expand that a little further, but it’ll just be more of these guys, which is my favorite part of the show.”

For instance, season 1 introduced Mark Proksch’s character Colin Robinson, an “energy vampire” who doesn’t drink people’s blood, but rather drains their energy by boring them with mundane talk. Might season 2 introduce even more variants of supernatural creatures?

“Our characters will come into contact I think with other kinds of vampires, but also other kinds of supernatural entities,” Simms teased. “A lot of it is figuring out which kinds of creatures exist in this universe, which Jemaine is the ultimate arbiter of. Leprechauns do not exist in this universe. Witches do.”

Werewolves, of course, definitely exist in the world of What We Do in the Shadows, dating back to the original movie. A highlight of season 1 was the all-star episode featuring cameos from actors who had previously played vampires in other movies and TV shows, including Waititi, Clement, Tilda Swinton, Evan Rachel Wood, Danny Trejo, and more. Might a similar summit occur with actors who have played werewolves? The crew seemed amenable to the idea. After EW’s Gerrad Hall started listing some (Taylor Lautner, Tyler Posey, Michael J. Fox…), Clement said, “that’s a good list. Can we get it?”

The Council scene was some incredible coordination across all these stars.

Including the Wesley Snipes 'Blade' shots. Crazy that they had a chance to include Brad Pitt, and blew it.

The brilliance that is What We Do in The Shadows is just being discovered by audiences, and with FX renewing the show for season 3, it has quickly become FX's most important show.

Until recently, What We Do in The Shadows has been largely overlooked. It is a spinoff of the 2014 mockumentary-style movie by the same name from Jermaine Clement, of Flight of the Conchords fame, and Taika Waiti, from Thor: Ragnarok and Jojo Rabbit. Although both starred in the movie, the FX television series uses different actors in a broader range of situations. Nevertheless, the general premise is the same.

What We Do in The Shadows is about a group of vampires living as roommates in a house as they try to adapt to the modern world. If you've never heard of Clement and Waiti, a vampire parody show may sound a little cheesy. Nevertheless, the FX show pulls it off. Season 1, which premiered in early 2019, was pretty good, but the show has really taken off in season 2, and word is quickly spreading about how hilarious and well-done What We Do in The Shadows really is. So much so, that it has become FX's most important show, surpassing even American Horror Story as their top contender. This is due to a number of reasons, and it's not just because it has been renewed for a season 3.

Even before season 2 of What We Do in The Shadows comes to a close, FX has already renewed the series for a third season. According to a recent FX press release, ratings are up 25% from last year, averaging 3.2 million viewers. This makes the series one of the most popular shows on FX in terms of viewership, behind American Horror Story by only a slim margin. Of course, AHS has a long history and an established audience, but What We Do In The Shadows is still more important for a couple of reasons.

For starters, it has better critical reception. AHS over the years has been hit or miss with critics, with some seasons performing better than others, while What We Do In The Shadows is currently receiving rave reviews. And as far as audiences are concerned, the show keeps getting better and better.

Another reason has to do with money. It's true, American Horror Story has been renewed for an additional 3 seasons. Nonetheless, it remains an expensive show to produce, with a massive budget. What We Do In The Shadows, on the other hand, takes place largely inside of a single house, with a limited cast and few special effects or expensive costumes to worry about. It's simple, easy to produce, and, most importantly, cheap. In fact, it may just be the perfect show during the current pandemic as it's mostly about a group stuck inside a house, just like many people are these days.

Funniest show on TV.

I had no idea how funny that concept of an energy vampire would go over, and thought it would run out of steam after a few episodes.

:roflmao:

What We Do in the Shadows has officially started filming for season 3, actor Harvey Guillén confirmed on Thursday. A televised spin-off to Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement's 2014 Kiwi-cult film, the FX horror-comedy mockumentary series follows a new crop of vampire roommates on their nightly misadventures in Staten Island. The series stars Kayvan Novak, Matt Berry, and Natasia Demetriou as the main vampires Nandor, Nadja, and Laszlo, whereas Mark Proksch features as a less traditional energy vampire Colin Robinson. Guillén also stars in the show as Nandor's long-suffering familiar Guillermo, whom the vampires treat with sheer disregard. Last May, the show was renewed for a third season.

On Thursday, Guillén added an Instagram story from the sets of What We Do in the Shadows in Toronto, indicating that the show has commenced production on season 3. In his story, the Guillermo actor stated that he was off to the sets for the first day of filming. He also shared a welcoming letter that was sent to him by the production team. Guillén had arrived in Toronto along with the other cast members two weeks earlier. But as per Canada's COVID-19 protocols, he had to quarantine for 14 days before he could begin shooting.

SAG Awards 2021 TV Snubs and Surprises: ‘What We Do in the Shadows’

Snubs
“What We Do in the Shadows” is shut out

Following a strong showing at the 2020 Emmys, many thought Jemaine Clement’s inspired vampire comedy was primed for success across the awards spectrum. But yesterday, the Golden Globes put a crucifix between themselves and the FX series, and today, the SAG Awards hid in the cold light of day. Even if one reasons it’s too hard to choose a favorite among the sterling cast (there are no Supporting TV categories at the SAGs), that’s what the Ensemble award was made for.
