Joe's Books and Things was there, closed in the early 2000s. You could see it off of 66 going west. Had really high ceilings. Its now a stereo store.

That's when he moved to Fairfax or was it called Fairfax Station ?

I mean, before, in Manassas Park. Joe had a store. He bought it from a man named Bill who had a comic store in the 70s in Manassas, across the street from the Manassas Drive In.

I grew up in Stafford in the 80's.  Still in Northern Virginia but now out in Ashburn area.

Are you still in the area?  Would be good to find some collectors in the DMV area to chat with.

Creepy thing is I think I know where you're talking about.  So is that how you ended up in LA?  Not sure if those 2 statements of yours connect but dang. Sorry, I didn't grow up in VA back then but I've now spent most of my life in NOVA.  I spoke to a few comic dealers in Fredricksburg, Woodbridge, and Fairfax and found out there's quite a lineage of VA comic shop owners that were former employees of previous comic shops in the area over the last 30 years.  Many either worked for or partnered with or employed many of the current comic shop owners in NOVA. Not sure if they were former employees of any of the ones you mentioned.  Wish I could've been around to visit those shops back in the day.

it'd be cool to meet up with the NOVA folks on here.  Do any of you guys attend the Tyson's Corner or Alexandria/Annandale mini cons put on by Shoff promotions?

I remember Joe's books.  IIRC, that was the store that had the first several issues of fantastic four in the case by the register.  Then, one day, they were all gone.  I asked what happened to them, and they guy said someone paid I think it was $500 for the set.  I was shocked anyone would pay that much for comics.

Joes books and things was in a strip mall in Manassas Park. 1980-late 80s. He moved to Fairfax and or Burke. Died of a heart attack I think. He bought store from Bill who had Bills Books and things in Manassas across from drive in that played pornos must have been mid to late 70s. Remember a Superman 17 there hanging on a clothes line.

In fredricksburg was Maria’s books.

Believe it or not NOVA used to be green farms and woods. It breaks my heart to go back now.

Child of the 80's and 90's in NOVA.  I got my books from Hole in the Wall Books in Falls Church, until a burglar cut a hole in their floor (ironic) and robbed them blind.  Then Big Planet Comics opened a branch in Vienna in the early 90's, which was a great shop and is still open.  Also, EG Comics opened soon after Big Planet in Vienna in the 90's and was a single owner/collector operation.  There used to be small local comic shows at the Best Western Hotel (converted to another hotel chain or condo building) on Rt 7 by Tyson's Corner and in Crystal City.  I remember saving up and buying mid-grade IH181 and FF48 for about $50 each, which was a steep price for a comic for a kid back then.  Good times.  Thanks for the trip down memory lane!
