We didn't have Saturday morning kids shows in the UK until the mid 70's by that time I was at work.  As kid we used to go to Saturday morning pictures, at the local cinema, where you'd get a serial, either the 1940's Batman, or a Zorro serial, several cartoons,  a Laurel and Hardy short, and a main feature, usually The Day The Earth Stood Still.

Hong Kong Phooey was a favourite of mine during the 70's while I was a teenager, who was this superguy voiced by the fantastic Scatman Crothers.

The Day the Earth stood still' original title is Farewell to the master and the robot is called Gort. This is a classic movie from the 50's and starred Michael Rennie as the Master aka Mr Carpenter.

That is true for The Day the Earth Stood Still but Harry Bates named it Gnut in "Farewell to the Master."
