The pilot episode of Columbo"was called "Prescription for murder"... it aired Feb 20th. 1968

it was so successful that another pilot was made and the rest was history ,.. becoming one of the longest continuously running shows of all time...

Actually the character of Lt Columbo was played by two actors before Falk they were Thomas Mitchell  and Bert Freed.
