Superman Golden Age "Minor" Keys

66 posts in this topic

I collect Superman comics from the Silver Age (Action 242, 252, Adventure 210, 247, 283 and Superboy 68) but am looking to get into some Golden Age books - but would like to start (and by "would like to start" I mean due to budgetary concerns) with what I will call "Minor" keys.  I was hoping for some guidance in terms of a good starting point for "Minor" keys including some classic covers - here are some that come to mind:

  • Superman 30 - 1st mr. mxyzptlk
  • Superman 61 - 1st Kryptonite
  • Action 29 - 1st Lois Lane Cover (although I think Maybe Action 27 ....)
  • Action 27 - maybe 1st Lois Cover
  • Action 47 - 1st Luthor cover
  • Action 63 - great WWII cover
  • Superman 24 - classic Flag Cover
  • Superman 14 - classic Flag Cover (although perhaps this is more than a Minor Key price wise)

Just wondering what other experienced Golden Age Superman collectors consider "Minor" keys.

Superman 23 is not a key hearsay but a classic war cover in awesome blue (thumbsu

That is a great cover!

I am wanting (and have a WTB posted) to start with either Superman 30 or 61 - and then move into some of the covers that I have mentioned.  I am somewhat surprised that Superman 61 is not a more important book/more expensive - perhaps it is the cover?

I would agree with this statement ? Action 15, 17, 19 and 20 (one of my favs) are awesome books - but I think bigger than “minor” keys :)

Superman 53 is a great one - cannot believe I forgot it in my initial list ?

Ones I would consider minor keys and / or classic covers that are sought after:

Superman 6, 11, 14, 17, 18, 23, 24, and 32 (It tickles!)

Action Comics 15, 17, 19, 20, 23, 29... and then a bunch of ones that are relatively more desirable.... 36, 39, 40, 41, 42, 43, 44, 47, 50, 52, 53, 58, 59, 61 and 63. Basically the war covers, the 2 black covers, and the "atomic radiation" cover.

when I think of minor, I think of a book like AC64 - first Toyman.  That's a pretty damn minor key and a cool book.

That is a cool book! Not sure what the price point is in the 1.0-3.0 range - i haven’t seen a lot of them for sale.

I would add Superman # 16:

1st Clark Kent cover appearance in either title.

1st Lois Lane cover in title.

1st "word balloon" in Superman or Action Comics, (Wouldn't see the 1st "word balloon" in Action Comics until #84) next "word balloon" in title is Superman #32 "It tickles".

I think this is an overlooked classic cover. Sums up the Superman/Clark/Lois/Metropolis mythos very nicely.

Jack Burnley was the MAN!

Awesome! Thanks so much everyone - I think I have a great list of “minor” keys to target :)

really like that Superman 16, and the Action 64, and still can’t believe I left Superman 53 off my original list ?
