Morning Charlemagnes :)

15 of the probable 17 Unusual Tales now reside in the Charleston Pence Vaults courtesy of this mornings arrival of Number 41, the answer to the Universe and Everything for those that can't add up, or are a sandwich short of a picnic:

 1381022259_UnusualTales41(Vol.1)September1963(9d).thumb.jpg.3a9b1492083540889bb235dd895b5f22.jpg

Th eagle eyed among you will be wondering why you were born with the eyes of an eagle and likely planning hospital intervention whilst trying to resist the urge to swoop down on unsuspecting field mice. That's what Eagles do isn't it? Who knows, they're all stuck in Hotel Calista Flockhart and refusing to take calls. You (the eagle eyed among you) will also be able to distinguish the 'LM 9d' hiding behind the rather inconsiderate '3p' post production pricing addition.

Here's a close up for those with Betty Davis standard human eyes:

The 3p reminds me of the good old days when brother and I would make the weekly 2 mile pilgrimage to 'Rodneys' in Barking, where we lived, to seek out UK reprint titles with massive inconsiderate marker pen prices on them. It didn't matter to us then, and it doesn't matter to me now, here on this UT copy. The 3p is a sign that the comic has lived. Along with the store stamp, it shows that the book has travelled and passed between hands before finding it's way, 56 years later, into the Charleston Pence Vault. A rare honour for the book - to be forever presented as the 9d example to the Three Men and a Dog Like Sparkenwood who give a flying :censored: at a rolling doughnut about such matters (thank you, Morlar, for that line, itself stolen with thanks as you will discover should you happen across the GMAIL cretins resignation letter).

Back to UT, here are the known 15 - I have them all (oh yes. I have them all):

utx15.thumb.PNG.7e12a18c087da77d0ce5dec9737c6381.PNG

And here are the missing two - number 37 ad 39:

ut.thumb.PNG.c665feb275b9adb91eb1fbcfdf3d97f1.PNG

Only time will tell if they exist. Time will have to learn to speak too of course, but I Di Gress ("Are you Di Gress?" "Yes, I am")

Nice to see that UT #41 is the first appearance of Felicia Hardy, which few have cottoned on to:

ut3.thumb.jpg.6ba77122719885926fea3705dd4b2960.jpg

It's a much better story than The Primitive Parallel which, in keeping with Charlton, does not feature inside. Tell a lie, it does. I just missed it. Too busy with Up Yonder Glen to notice it.

"Charlton Comics Give You More!"

Correct :)

Still Morning Charlemagnes, but fast approaching lunch time :)

Those in the know of the know all knowing knowledge will know that the title Teenage Hotrodders was on the Charleston Pence Missing List, presumed cents, for over 800 years. Many Jedi were trained during this period of unexplained absence. Or abspence, as we should call it. And then, those in the know of the know all knowing knowledge saw the arrival of Teenage Hotrodders # 2 in this Thread(dy the Hotrodder) and there was a rejoicing:

542530924_Teen-AgeHotrodders2(Vol.1)June1963(9d).thumb.jpg.6772744dcfeeca02ea51727f34d3364b.jpg

But those in the full knowledge of the complete know all knowing knowledge knew that Teenage Hotrodders #4 had also turned up. Here she be:

422453567_Teen-AgeHotrodders4(Vol.1)October1963(9d).thumb.jpg.5cd4a30460796dd09277d4fdba06de31.jpg

So, nothing for years and years and years and years, and now two of five:

thr.thumb.PNG.51497df6136c7cc687717be98da384a8.PNG

Maybe they only did even numbers? But that would be odd. Actually, it would be even - even only numbers. Odd that. But even, in reality.

As for TH4, Rick Roberts is forced to say the following line inside: "Those extra horses are paying off!" Whatever could he mean? Has Black Fury fixed the race?

bf.jpg.7b49f6ee2ec243611dffcc2dba004555.jpg

"Neigh"

Translation: "F:censored:ing cheek!"

Anyroad (Fred Elliot) - any slip road (not Fred Elliot) - Rick has some bother but wins the race. Is anyone surprised? No, of course not. Even with equine meddling Rick wins the race.

 bf.jpg.7b49f6ee2ec243611dffcc2dba004555.jpg

"Neigh. Neigh"

Translation: "Look, I'm not going to f:censored:ing tell you again pal"

So, another suspect giveaway in six gun heros, cleverly hidden on the front page.   Bar Zim Toys! Here's the scoop!

So far we have yet to find out exactly who won the trip to Hollywood for the swimming pool and a choice viewing of "Off on a Comet.".  What do they mean by that exactly? Off? Like "Getting Off on it?"

Afternoon :)

I've been looking back over the last few pages of this thread and wondering why so few people like or comment on what I do. I put a lot of work into it, and get next to nothing back. Look at the last five or six proper posts - nothing. I don't get it. Glass - I love you man, you mad farmer, but I just can't be bothered to put all this effort in anymore.

So - final update: I have 413 pence Charltons, of 465 confirmed, of 833 possible. I'll keep collecting, and more I'm sure will come in.

Cheerio

I will be really sad if you drop it. What you are doing is what appeals to me the most in this genre. I loved my books with the ads to "Learn to play the Piano" .  You are actually collecting, collating and reporting on a body of comic graphic arts which isn't taken seriously because it seems so cheap. That might well be so but if you look back at any of these graphic sweat shops, the themes the same- get another book out on the stands in three weeks. They simply looked to the guys who drew them, and they didn't call them artists, to be able to pump out five- seven titles, get them inked and lettered and out the door.  Some, caught fire for people who sensed opportunity selling them and making money as the decades passed . This is not what Stan Lee or anyone else expected in 1962. It was a hand to mouth endeavor.

Look, I take note that the AF15 bunch slowed way down when they had a guy saying he gets hard ons thinking about price increases. That's really pathetic. Most of my money is in financial stocks and while I'm pleased to see phenomenal value increases, it doesn't give me wet dreams.

What you are doing is actually wonderful. Irreverant yet searching for material that documents some people struggling to make the rent.  It may be you really belong in the history of comics board with this instead of the financials section of CGC. If you do quit, I get it but let me know where you take it to. It's just really funny and lights up my day.  If I could assist from here, I would but I'm in the great north woods and it's not a Charlton hangout unless they did some stuff on vampire lumberjacks.

Please don't quit.

outside of the GA guys who are all great , the very best that these boards have to offer often amd almost always go completely unappreciated

Steve's threads are brilliant and powerful , but most board members are more interested in 7 second sound bites

Steve ,,, you deserved forumite of the year this year and it is/was a travesty that you did not win

Sorry guys, I was in a pit of self pity yesterday, smashing around like a tart in a strop, following a run of slings and arrows. I should know better to post when the mood is 'in the khazi' - sorry.

Brent will return, Julie refreshed soon.

Nice girl, Julie.

Thank you all, for being kind

You inspire people. I mean, Charlton comics inspired my dad to throw out all my comics in the 1958-1961 period.  What other media could have instigated that attack? Now, Natalie Portman is somehow going to become Thor. It's getting ugly out there.

I'm waiting for Betty White to be cast as an Eternal but no, it's Angela Jolie.

Inspire people? Yes, I think I do Pete. To go and do something else :)

I hear Champion the Wonder Horse is in the running (heh, heh) to play Black Fury. Black Beauty is furious, saying the part should have gone to a black horse. Actors are touchy aren't they.

i was just at a smaller sized show and i always forget to ask about Dr Brent comics ... i have actually only seen one copy in the wild ...

About half the pence copies I've managed to find are the only copy I've seen so far Craig. There are a handful that appear regularly, even in the US, but I wonder whether some had a print run of 12 copies, and 11 of them are either gathering dust in attics across Blighty or have returned to dust.
