The other chap on planet Earth who likes Charlton comics brought this cracker to my attention last week:

1015017496_Konga515cVariant.jpg.76e0cdf6d8f063389de97ff6e5ebaa15.jpg

He spotted it on a site that can't be mentioned for legal reasons. Yes, that one.

Oh, how I wish it was mine Harrumph!.gif.c810220490aa6a56b5b543add384c12a.gif

But it isn't. Still, it's confirmed now, our tenth Charlton 15 ceevee:

I've updated my chart and everything :)

Here's the extract from Jon McClure's Overstreet #49 market report (I gave him the latest issue details):

You have to get the report in well in advance, hence it being two short. Nice to see this information fleshed out in the guide :)

well , it's not like anyone is claiming relevance or social value.  There's no guilt at all.  No LBGT, no race, no Misogyny ( outside of the accepted norms), most importantly, no discernable cash redemptions.  Just cheap prizes of really dubious distribution.

I suspect Steve has less than 11 pounds invested in the entire affair mostly in shipping. .

I admit, I'm about to start looking for these things here .  My divorce settlement will be ugly.

It’s a sticker :p

5aace38702d5f_AtomicMouse44(Vol.1)September1961(6d)crop.jpg.6734e71d87fc782c801563e0c703e32c.jpg

Obviously, the book is a pence copy as you’d be able to see the cents price given its size relative to the sticker. And anyway, you can see the pence price when you hold my copy up to the light. So at least I know a pence copy exists (I haven’t found one without a sticker yet).

The image from the Charlton blog looks like a different book to my one. Could there be multiples with a sticker? Then I noted that the owner of the blog 'manipulates' his images to make them look better. So the likelihood is that he has manipulated the picture that was used by the seller of my copy for his site!

So, probably just the one copy, and probably no ‘no price variants’ exist after all :sorry:

Or do they….. hm

No such problem with new AM#44 though :)

Stickers on comic books. Oh, the memories.

Specifically Fantastic Four #48. An unfortunate collision of real world events resulted in all of the F48's that landed in Australia for distribution having the monopoly distributor here (Gordon & Gotch) applying a "10c" sticker to every single one.

Why?

Just at that time, Australia was switching from "Pounds, Shillings and Pence" to a decimal currency. In February 1966, the time these comics arrived, the "new money" dictated that one shilling (old) was equivalent to 10c (new).

So, Gordon and Gotch (who for some time had happily imported US 12c comics, with local newsagents happily marking them as a shilling (1/-)), decided to make sure Australians were not overcharged 12c Australian for the comics i.e. the US cover price and instead were covered with a "10c" sticker.

The problem is that over many, many years I have seen so many FF48 covers ruined by amateur attempts to remove said sticker. It is one tough bastich to remove, unless one knows what one is doing

Ha! Nice story Duff. Stickers eh...

I spotted this one on the bay of E recently. Dirty great 3p sticker on it. Obviously an 'LM' 6d copy, as enough of the surrounding price box area was visible and you'd see 'Still Only...10c' were it a cents copy:

1100509450_RomanticStory56(Vol.1)(2).jpg.f16ce23c47649ca1ccea35dee8f432e5.jpg

I made an offer, which the seller countered too high. I said "I'd have bought it if it didn't have the sticker". So he accepted my original offer and said "Just use a hairdryer and it will come off".

I had a go.

The sticker did indeed come off! Left a mark / residue of course. But what did it reveal?

Someone had inked out the 6d price :pullhair:

Here's the Teen-Age Love upgrade that Pat posted and then I posted this morning.

It looks so much brighter in hand. I love books with multiple cover scenes and strong colours. Whether you like Charlton comics or not, I think you'd have to be dead to not like this cover. Even with the intrusion of the Treasure Chest competition.

Is "TO CK 2" a hidden message I wonder? I like to think so.

Wonderful comic! :)

So, did Charlton ever do giant size on annuals with this stuff?  I can't find a Giant Snogger's special for two  shillings and I've looked almost everywhere.  Well, under the bed at at least. In the trash. At the dentists office.  Perhaps the used car dealers office?

On another note, taking a close look, I see where one of the prizes was a Stelber Bicycle. I've provided a handy link for the determined historian to see the opportunites to have acquired this jewel. One could store it on the back of a Corvair in an emergency.

You won't find one, as they didn't make any. Big Monkeys and Reptiles, yes. Rampant snoggers? No.

If they did make one, these are the places where it would be.

I know everything about these bikes having watched a repeat of American Pickers on Dave. Dave is a TV channel over here in case you thought I'd lost my mind Pete. Pete isn't - Dave is.

well did you see the american pickers with the copy of AF15? And yes, I do realize I'm advertising for the competition.  I take note that Charlton chipping goes almost entierly without notice. It's probably because all of the known copies are in such terrible shape with all those little snoggers ruining the cover art, such as it is.

Did you read Dippold the Optician?
