Been doing some bagging, rebagging and boarding tonight.

I have a Nurse Betsy Crane #13 pence copy, so you can add to your confirmed list

Or was that one of the ones I showed you recently, I forget lol

Will scan it tomorrow if you wish

That one is already in the files thanks Kevin - it's Jims favourite cover, coincidentally...

Morning :)

I finally picked up #43 of Atomic Mouse this week, having confirmed his existence more at less at the start of my Charlton curating journey.

Here he be:

113375233_AtomicMouse43(Vol.1)July1961(6d).thumb.jpg.d81a06bbd6161345ee2c7d588f427678.jpg

Quite a few Charlton pence copies that I own, or have seen over the last few years, have this inked out price thing going on and quite often it is / was under a price sticker (you can see the residue marks of the sticker in the image below):

am43b.PNG.0f6bfa6f1cf9e1e946e2bb375a10499c.PNG

It makes you wonder why whoever did it would go to the trouble of inking out the price if they were intending to put a sticker over it doesn't it. Given the amount of copies I've seen like it I wonder if it was some standard practice back in the day or whether just one prolific seller did this and its all his copies that have subsequently surfaced.

Funnily enough, it looks like my copy here is the copy on the GCD, which has been on there a while:

am43.PNG.3d7db46ce75300b4e6dd41ae7582fdef.PNG

So a former owner may have uploaded it, or maybe someone spotted it from a previous eBay sale.

My old 'confirmation' image itself looks a little like it and has the same inked out price scenario but if you look closely you can see it's a different copy:

1677703047_AtomicMouse43.jpg.e7cbb39a9e722dd4cd30152ee7c6a138.jpg

Anyway, I'll keep looking for an uninked copy. Hopefully there's one out there somewhere, as the purist in me likes to actually see the price on a price variant!

I passed the 500 confirmed pence copies mark recently by the way. I was planning a big post here to celebrate - not that there's much interest in the thread - and maybe I'll do that when I get around to scanning the official 500th book. I've gathered some cracking looking copies lately, including some really scarce ones, and have only 330 to hunt down now.

By my calculations, it will take a good few years yet to find them, if I ever do.

I enjoy it. Unlike other things I have collected in my years these books are here to stay until I bite the bullet. I wonder what the expression on the face will be of whoever discovers them when I've gone (no kids, likely to die alone). Imagine it - a rake of comic boxes - they'll be getting excited.

AF #15?

Hulk #1?

A full run of the X-Men?

Oh.

No.

Atomic Mouse

lol

Indeed, I can hear "Eleanor Rigby" pulsing in the background. Then a stint on "Hoarders" and it's time for the ceremony with a ZOOM meeting  addressing the real question of why AF 15 hasn't self immolated.

I like your thread Steve.  I've moved into growing mushrooms in the basement.

I thought my Atomic Mouse tale might garner a comment or two if not a titter or three.

Never mind....

Feast your eyes on this last one. It's one of a number that I've been looking for for so long, and who've all arrived together. Lockdown seems to be bringing them all out, which is nice. Like buds and spawn.

Anyway, Sue and Sally there, flying about. The heroines of our threads title no less. And our current choice of avvy too.

Praise them Pete, the Nurses. Praise them :cloud9:

Having just finished "Band of brother's " as well as "The pacific" again I want to know if they hold hands before they jump.  Sort of like "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid"

"I know. Just ignore them Flossie. Sorry, Patricia..."

I had been holding back but it looks like "Sally" (if that is her real name)  is trying to break that young man's arm off.

Bumping this thread (though, admittedly, not on purpose).

Found a weird one, I think. Cruising ebay UK, as you do, & stumbled across this lot

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Charlton-Comics-Bundle-Of-Silver-Age-Westerns-6-Comic-Books-In-Total/303761040524?hash=item46b991a48c:g:JtAAAOSw9-JfqrFt

within which, there is this -

s-l1600.thumb.jpg.bea239784ceb877c2dec7d6bac9f8341.jpg

which looks odd because of this -

9d.jpg.66492cd796c9f9357681bde94ebca78c.jpg

I don't recall seeing this format for a Charlton UK Pence Price Variant. My initial thought was that it was a UK reprint, because they are out there & they look broadly similar to the US originals except for size, interior colour, etc. So I went & had a look on GCD to compare a US cents cover Cheyenne Kid 32 with this oddball.

Of course, the GCD has no 'British' variant for this issue (I haven't gotten that far in my edits, yet), but they do have this -

149593.jpg.bb5534b4aa03729985aa7a17ef5cf2dd.jpg

6d.jpg.f98560a7cc56a39baad7205391c50b9b.jpg tried to enlarge, but it doesn't get clearer than that.

...and it's listed as the standard version. I know that's nonsense & I'll correct their listing when I get a chance (plus I'll keep an eye out for a cents copy to scan in), but it raises a couple of questions.

Is the big red 9d copy a US printed UKPPV with a different UK pence price? If the price under the over-stamp on the GCD copy is 6d, it implies this.

Did Charlton do this more than once, kind of like the handful of Marvel titles that were printed 6p & over-stickered 8p?

Has this been discussed here before & I just missed it because, well, 39 pages of Charltons?

Can I rationalize 20 quid for the lot just to get my hands on this?

hm

I've been watching this lot myself Petronella, and made an offer. I have all the issues already, so it's just that Cheyenne that is of interest.

My guess is it's a 9d sticker applied over the printed 6d price - here's my UK copy:

801053625_CheyenneKid32(Vol.1)January1962(6d).thumb.jpg.09ec1ed03e49cafa7e125e93a6aa2756.jpg

I've see that a lot, 9d stickers over 6d prices. We'll soon see if the seller accepts.

I don't mind actually. It has a nice red look to it and the issue has a bit of a miscut. The other two Chapences in the lot were in better nick than my existing copies too, which was nice. All that plus a Black Fury reading copy. What's not to like? :)
