Paramount has reportedly made a deal with F. Gary Gray to direct a live-action M.A.S.K. film, according to Deadline. The film would be produced by Hasbro and Gray, and is currently in search of a writer "to hatch a contemporary subculture movie with a youth empowerment angle."

M.A.S.K. - which stands for "Mobile Armored Strike Kommand" - began as a series of toys and an animated series in the mid 80s. The general premise of the franchise is that MASK is an underground task force led by Matt Trakker, who try to hunt down the criminal organization VENOM.

Gray has developed a pretty profound following over the years, helming films like Friday, Set It Off, and The Italian Job. Most recently, Gray directed Straight Outta Compton and The Fate of the Furious, and is being tapped to direct Tessa Thompson and Chris Hemsworth in a Men In Black spinoff.

According to the report, Gray gravitated towards M.A.S.K. "because it is a vintage property that could be revamped and have someting to say to a contemporary audience".

Hasbro and Paramount’s upcoming M.A.S.K.: Mobile Armored Strike Kommand film has added Bad Boys For Life writer Chris Bremner to pen the -script for the upcoming film.

The upcoming M.A.S.K. film was first announced in 2015 as part of a shared cinematic universe between Hasbro’s various properties. This would include other Hasbro properties such as G.I. Joe, Micronauts, and Rom the Space Knight. Movement on the film, however, has been relatively slow. For a time it was even rumored that the film was going to be canceled but that does not seem to be the case.

The M.A.S.K. franchise itself is one of Hasbro’s lesser-known properties and was originally created by toy company Kenner. The franchise centers on an organization known as M.A.S.K. (Mobile Armored Strike Kommand) and its battles against a terrorist organization known as V.E.N.O.M. (Vicious Evil Network of Mayhem). The last major news that we heard about the M.A.S.K. film was that Fate of the Furious and Straight Outta Compton director F. Gary Gray would be helming the project in April of 2018. Now, however, we know that the film has added a new writer to its crew.

According to a new report from The Hollywood Reporter, Bad Boys For Life scribe Chris Bremner is now set to write the screenplay for the upcoming M.A.S.K. film. Chris Bremner’s previousf film, Bad Boys for Life, was a big hit with audiences and critics, earning over $390M worldwide on a $90M budget and currently has a 77% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. But, from the look of things, Hasbro and Paramount want to bring in the Bad Boys For Life writer into whatever cinematic universe that they are planning.
