This was all over local bay area news channels, yesterday. The lines they showed reminded me of the death of superman days.

@eastbayrudy surprised you have no line in the photos and still got a copy, the owner on the news channel said half of the (I think 3000 allocation) was already pre-sold.

I'm sure news coverage helped drive up demand way over normal ordered variants.

Next day bids on Ebay are crazy (not sure how realistic though, as only sold one I see is 9.99)

I got there around 6PM. At this point only people that pre ordered were allowed to pick up the book. The line was in store for me. Took almost an hour to ring me up. Lots of people walking up hoping to get a copy. They all left disappointed.

No it’s all the same book. I think the top pic you got there is just a generic stock photo the ebayer got from the initial pre order. If you scroll through his pics you see it’s actually the one with the Cape and Cowel logo.

So today was my birthday and my dad comes over to my place with a brown paper bag with my gift.  I'm of that age where I don't expect a gift anymore so it was a bit of a surprise, but he knows I like reading/collecting comics.  I look inside and can see comics nestled inside bags and boards.  I gently pull the books out and what do I find?  Two copies of the Cape & Cowl variant.  I look at him and ask incredulously "you waited in line for these?  How did you even hear about it?  I didn't know until Thursday (courtesy of this thread) and by then they were sold out."  Well, apparently he had heard about the release in the news and pre-ordered 2 copies.  I was still a bit leery, "you bought these.  In the store?  Not online?  Do you know how much they're selling for online?"  "Yeah, in store, great shop.  How much is it online?", he responds.  I looked on eBay and proceeded to tell him "recent sales of ~$150" to which he got excited like finding a diamond in the rough.  I think it has made him really happy because he kept bringing it up all night.  I'm sure the price of the book will drop eventually, but I'll always have the memory/story to go along with them.

By the way, there are three varieties for this cover, so look for them before selling.  The first two have to do with the fact that on some of the covers, there is a cutting shift upward:

Short Lobe Variety

On the inner back cover, there is a GEICO ad.  At the bottom left corner of the ad there is a small cloud.  This cloud has a lower right lobe.  When the shift is high enough, the bottom of this lobe is complete.  On six of my copies (I have 10) it is complete.  However, on four copies the shift is so far up that it cuts off the bottom of the lobe.

Lightning Bolt Variety

On the front outer cover, there is a small curling lightning bolt in the upper right corner.  The upward cutting shift has to be very high if the front cover is to show the entire lightning bolt.  Only one of my ten copies shows the entire lightning bolt.  If you have the entire lightning bolt, you will have a short lobe on the Geico ad.  The lightning bolt variety is a very important variety, because it shows a feature of the front cover, completely.  I suspect it is scarce, given the vagaries of the cutting which went on in order to get these 3000 covers.  Some examples of this feature may cut it close, but USE A MAGNIFYING GLASS to make sure you have the complete image.  If you do, there should be background above the lightning bolt.

Crossed Arms Line

On page 6 of the text, there is, in the upper left corner, an image in orange of crossed arms.  About one quarter in from the left edge of this page, there is a vertical line which is particularly clear in the lower half of the page.  It looks like it was caused by incising.  I have five examples of this among my ten copies.  On two of my copies, I have short lobe and crossed arms line.  On three of my copies, I have crossed arms line.

So, look for these varieties, in particular, in combination.  Since a complete lightning bolt means some of the bottom of the front cover image is cut off, and presumably a complete bottom page image cuts off part of the lightning bolt, it kinda makes you wonder if there is a variety which shows the COMPLETE front image.

I mention these varieties because the film did the largest box office opening of any film in history, so the movie legacy, such as this cover, will be important to trophy collectors in the years to come, and it's trophy collectors (fabulously rich people who may not be specialists but want a coveted item real bad), who will pay a lot of money for these.  At that point, any small variety will mean money.  A complete image of a feature on a front cover, is important, which is why it is important to try to get a complete lightning bolt.

USE A MAGNIFYING GLASS!  Even a 2x pocket one is very useful.  They're only a few bucks on Ebay

Let me know if you find any other varieties.

Because this cover was rapidly produced, it WAS NOT WELL PROOFREAD.  For example, there is a constant variety dot in one of the margins--this appears on ALL my copies, so I am not describing it, I am sure it is on every copy, so not important.  There is also some bleeding on images, which also appears on each of my copies.  But that doesn't mean that, with careful examination, you won't find other varieties which appear on, say, one in every hundred copies.

As more information is gathered about this cover, examples with these constant (recurring) varieties will become much more valuable.

So don't be a dummy!  Don't sell one of these for a measly $100 or something dumb like that.  EXAMINE CAREFULLY.

Did you seriously write all of that just because of some slight, normal manufacturing variances?

He's going for the record on how quickly a book can be added to this list:
