My point was that a fully detached cover would be a ding down to no higher than 2.5, and then add in a fully split spine and that'd drop it at least another 1.0 grade down to 1.5 max.

In the end, seems like the more important thing to consider is what appeals to the collector. A torn front cover versus some other reason why a book ends up grading out as a 1.5 -- whichever one found more desirable (and priced fairly) will get purchased. The old "buy the book not the grade" wins again.
