Looks good to me!

I've been watching this copy on ebay for a while. It was up for £50 which was just too high for me to pay in the name of research. Then I remembered I'd purchased from the seller before, and he was a Cardiac fan. So I sent him this message:

"Hello. Fellow Cardiac here again. Would you take a measley £30 for this crummy comic? No one else will love it like I will. If yes, a 'worthy of laudation' will be forthcoming. If no, it won't. I mean I want it and everything, but I could buy a car for £50. It wouldn't be the best car in the world, I grant you, but it would get me to Deptford and back I'm sure. Good bye"

He replied:

"You tale of woe has touched my aching heart. If only you'd stop making that hissing noise."

:cloud9:

There are so many advantages to being a Cardiac follower....

Not that anyone seems to care, but here are four new additions to my Archie pence collection courtesy of yesterdays London Comic Fair.

First up, a second copy of Katy Keene Comics #53:

371298565_KatyKeeneComics53(July1960)9d.CopyB.thumb.jpg.dc5ffb17b42b371571a2713440d6fb3b.jpg

A little better than my other copy and too good to leave behind.

371298565_KatyKeeneComics53(July1960)9d.CopyB.thumb.jpg.dc5ffb17b42b371571a2713440d6fb3b.jpg  270110829_KatyKeeneComics53(July1960)9d.thumb.jpg.d7ac1152ba116b83a101ab03c6a65bc0.jpg

Ordinarily, I'd get the Count to do his "Two! Two Comics of ze Katy Keenenwoodsman Person, ah, ha, ha, ha, hah!" routine but there's only so many times you can be blanked on something before you get the message.

"Two! Two expressions of ze blankus exasperatus, ah, ha, ha, ha, hah!countvoncount.gif.437a1e8e5d168a905fe57e33c01529f2.gif

Hmmm.

Next up, a proper image of Archie's Joke Book Magazine #47. The previous evidence was a grainy half shot from eBay. Here's the real thing:

950197643_ArchiesJokeBookMagazine47(July1960)9d.thumb.jpg.96e91f0ffcd6623fa797d57a960092f9.jpg

None of these books are in particularly good shape, but you cant be too picky when researching these obscurities. Often, the tatty copy is the only copy. @Harry Lime? More tat here mate :)

Next up two of Archie's girls. No, not Betty and Veronica. Well, yes, Betty and Veronica. But #53 and 55 is what I meant:

521487010_ArchiesGirlsBettyandVeronica53(May1960)9d.thumb.jpg.fce54b122b6247ef4dc98fdf6790aeac.jpg

Both seen already, but these two are mine. I love the 9d stamp on the #53, just alongside the 9d printed price. And a T&P stamp too - not Miller. Interesting, given my earlier stamp pontifications.

So, still on 21 books out of a possible 46. I'd love to find the Katy robot cover in pence. That would be a thing. Maybe one day.

Thanks for reading. Well, I say thanks for reading but that would presume somebody had.

Seems you got quite a haul across the pence threads, at the comic fair...You must have spent a fortunexD

Not that much at all really - a few of the dealers are supportive of the research I'm doing and give me a good deal. And most of the books are mid to low grade so I wont be making a fortune on resale anytime soon!

The T&P stamp on the B&V 53 is a bit belt and braces for sure.

It all just adds to the mystery Gnash...

Evening all :)

I may have mentioned already that the only physical differences between an Archie pence copy and an Archie cents copy is the price. But it doesn't hurt to double check every now and again does it. Mistakes can happen. Anomalies can surface. Trends can be bucked. Perceived wisdom can be turned on its head.

Appropriately enough, here's a pair of Mad Houses, ripe and ready for inspection:

Ah-ha!

So, two things you have learned in this post:

  1. The only difference between a pence and cents Archie is the price
  2. I can't take a decent photo for love nor money

Nothing more will I teach you today.

Thanks Herc. I save pictures of pence stamped copies when I see them and had this one already:

It's on my to do list to try and establish who was the distributor for the Archie printed pence priced copies that this thread is about. There are examples of Miller and T&P stamped cents priced books so it could be either - or neither! In the early 1960's Miller liked to show they were the distributor, hence the 'LM' on the Charlton pence variants and indicia details / cover stamps on their Marvels. Similarly, T&P added their data to the Marvels to show they were the distributor. So it's odd that these Archies have no indicator on them, only the price change. It's the same with Dell, Gold Key and King though.

We'll find out one day hopefully, either by me finding out myself or the person who knows finding one of my threads. When I joined the boards I was told that the 'old guard' would accept you only if you proved your worth. I kind of hoped that I had with my pence research, but none of them ever visit my threads. There may well be a member here posting who has the answer. If so, I hope they dive in one day :wishluck:

Shut up.

Anyway, I have two Laughs now - the only two known 9d Laughs as it goes.

No new Archie pence copies alas, but I did pick this cents copy up at the London Fair yesterday. I wish the pence experiment extended to this date - a pence Robot Cover would be cool wouldn't it  :)

Morning :)

I haven't done that for a while.

Archie UKPVs never took off did they, really, as a thread. Still, I haven't added a new 9d find in over 16 months, despite my regular search routine. Just shows you how rare they are I suppose - virtually non-existent in fact. But routinely unloved.

I have more examples of L Miller stamped cents copies in the files now than the UKPVs. Here's a few I picked up recently to slot into the forthcoming Charlton research update (all will be explained):

1798319877_1962.04BettyVeronica76LMStamp.thumb.jpg.7a2ee3ceeb0f74ce60fe1b2963d8470f.jpg 1850140625_1962.05BettyVeronica77LMStamp.thumb.jpg.d987fc7a1f7f2f0c6ad356346b7e1d66.jpg 2090797937_1962.06Archie128LMStamp.thumb.jpg.1952e61d7bf9a2ab6dd52f4208bbc72c.jpg

Funnily enough, I didn't detect much interest or love for the Archie 15 centers either:

I've only found one more of those since I gatecrashed that thread - 79 confirmed copies of those now.

Anyway, it was something to do while I wait for the rain to stop, this post. See you in another year maybe

I love 'em, me. But you're right, they're as rare as rocking horse poop. I wouldn't say I check for Archie UKPPVs every day, but I'm looking at least twice a week. Can't remember the last time I saw one.

Still, thanks to you, Loretta, we at least mostly know what's out there. I don't always have time to jump in with a comment, but I'm usually watching from some dark corner somewhere & I'm indebted to you (not financially, of course, don't get your hopes up) for your tireless and meticulous research. Thanks for keeping on top of things.

Chin, chin.

Aw, cheers Letitia. It can be lonely going this research. Nice when you get the occasional nod of recognition :foryou:
