2018 CGC Green Eggs Grading Contest Round 4 - Commentary

Congrats to Azkaban, HighStakesComics, Chillax23, Mr.TawkyTawny, DeadOne, LordRahl, and Cruzin' Thru Comics for scoring Double Bullseyes this round. 

Old_dano's score has been amended from Round 3 and he is now tied for 11th place. We apologize for the scoring error. 

The scorekeeper is now back home and things should hopefully be back on track. 

If you're going to make your move, you have FIVE more rounds to do it. 

If you think it's impossible to catch up... Look at treemot who was in 107th place after Round 1 and is now in the Top Twenty. 

You've reached the half-way point and it's now all downhill!

ROUND 5 is finally HERE!

Good information since a number of those on the list sell raw books in the sales threads.

For some it’s a badge of honor and for others a badge of shame.

Something to consider when someone goes on about their great grading abilities.

based on my showing so far I would have customers lined out the door and backwards.

You would think many would stand behind their grading and enjoy participating. (I’m thinking about guys who regularlary sell books)

Not seeing that for the most part.  Perhaps they’re just busy, or maybe don’t want to risk scoring low in contests like these....

1950's War Comics and I have gotten the same score each round but have not agreed on a grade for any of the 8 books

There's a difference between what grade you put on a book, and what you think CGC put on a book.  In my case, I'd rather win than put the "right" grades on these!

When you have to assign a grade to a book like Millie the Model #5 with a rip in the corner as we saw in Round Two, there may be a discrepancy between the grade you would realistically place on that book if selling it raw and the one CGC gave it. To avoid dispute or looking silly, you would likely just grade it conservatively. Also, by applying a standard like Overstreet to grade that Millie #5 you will likely come up with a lower grade than the one CGC assigned. This contest is more about familiarity with the nuances of CGC grading and its “rule of thumb” approach when handling certain defects.

So, if a seller of raw books on these boards who grades consistently and conservatively participates in this contest, they do indeed run the risk of scoring low in this tourney and looking like they can’t grade when in fact they can.

well I wouldn't make this out to be some sort of litmus test of solid grading skills - just the fact that we have to use pictures of the books inside plastic slabs is alone enough to be outside normal grading conditions for anyone-- even CGC. Having that raw book in hand is far more in tune with the type of actual grading we do on our own books imo.

If someone wants to view the results as a barometer, they are missing that point.

Those people would show up in the OVER/UNDER chart actually as consistent NET UNDERGRADERS.  (Which might be a good indicator if you believe in grading by scan...   )

We need an annual special recognition award for the Net Undergrader. Kind of like what the Lady Byng Trophy is to hockey.
