I bought my first book from mile high a month back. Morbius (2013) #2 newsstand. Needed it to help finish my complete run of 1-9 and it was discounted from the normal mile high price. Advertised as NM, actual book more like a VF-.

I see it as a relatively cheap lesson.

Nothing gets the laughter rolling like a good Chuck thread.  How ironic that in the 1980's I would dream about purchasing some of the books Mile High was schilling.  Never did but all those who did are now sitting on a nice roi!

I think there is an interesting back story on that where house investor.....that I have heard....chuck continues to buy in bulk, on his latest newsletter he appears to have bought two truck loads from the east coast. With new comic book sales down 10% and Graphic novels sales down 9% in the last year, look for Steve Geppi to  to heavy into the back issue market and buy chuck out.

Yeah the story is on the MH website under Chucks articles. This is the Mile High II collection. Really interesting.

Yeah, he did eventually tell the true story about that "private New York investor" who sold him the comics.

Is the story that's on there about the son selling while his Dad was in prison (child porn) the real story?

I live about 40 minutes from the Mile High warehouse, I visit about once a year.  Save up a list of filler books and wait for a 60% off codeword coupon.  Visit in person to handpick issues.

This is currently showing up on the site (under the newsletter):

I assume so. My point was just that "private New York investor" sounds a lot better in an ad than "crooked distributor with a warehouse full of stolen comics".

I know Chuck is in his early 60's ( as am I)  and it is very hard to imagine him selling out.  He is such a type A personality I cannot conceive of him not being involved in at least 10 projects at any point in time, and as much as he loves his farm there are only so many greenhouses and Chuck made lakes that he can occupy his time with

So 3% of the people on the boards (who took the poll) have bought from him in the last couple years.  Says a lot about his business model.

But if you Google ‘where can i buy comic books on line’, Mile High is within the first few choices; the CGC crowd already knows where to go

Just wondered how the business goes. It has been in business for a long time.

Same as the illegal drug business. Thriving still but really bad for you to use as a customer....

Is he still a player among the big dealers? The only chatter I really see is whatever is posted here, but largely, I just see his business model ridiculed for crazy pricing and unreliable grading. Is he at SDCC slinging big books?

He quit. After years of overpriced cr*p he made a point of letting everyone know he was leaving in the last couple of years and how it was because of the San Diego con and not his business model. He’s a tool with his comments I’ve found.

Just to add to this discussion.  I ordered two books from mile high that are somewhat difficult to find but are modern so after hearing about their grading I figured my best chance would be buying a modern.  Not so much...  I'm not going to go into great detail because its not worth it but I'll say the experience was terrible.  Everything from the cart, to checkout and especially grading.  NM are F+/VF-.  I've read countless posts and still decided to try it so if there's anyone else tossing around the idea of ordering from mile high don't bother.  Whenever I buy from raw books Bob Storms or James Payette (Bob is the best dealer grader out there by far IMO...) I don't even ask for scans anymore because I know I'll get what I expect to receive.

If I'm looking for something specific, nine times out of ten I can call @MrBedrock shop & they'll either have it in house, or can have it transferred to the closest location.

Then there's that 1/10.

I'll check MCS.com, post on the boards to see if any of ya'll are willing to part with (enter book here), and as a last resort eBay. If I come up short, I start making calls, including to Mile High Comics.

Mile High Comics website is abysmal; the pinnacle of 1992 website design. I ignore it, and go straight to the phone call. The people who answer the phone are always polite & helpful. If they have what I'm looking for, I have to evaluate if I'm willing to pay 20-30% over what an eBay copy is going for, while rolling the dice on their evaluation of a book's condition (if raw, not always consistent), and shipping. Sometimes, for that "gotta have it" book, its worth it. (Most) other times, its a hard pass. Still, they have their niche, and their place in the comic collecting world.
