After a number of people told me stuff like "Alex Raymond and Hal Foster are the worst hack artists that ever worked in comics. Todd McFarlane is king!"

Boy, that is one of the most cringe-worthy statements I have ever had the mispleasure of reading!

Would you care to share any of the details of what was in that paperback haul?  :foryou:

no kidding

Now, now, you guys........we really should be more tolerant and understanding of the newer artists.  (tsk)

Especially when the true king and master artist of them all is Mr. Rob Liefeld:

Eck. You picked a great example to illustrate your point. The technique is there, but there seems, at least to me, some fundamental aspect of the artform missing. Distortion bordering on the absurd, it seems to me, to what effect? It seems self-indulgent, actually.  :/

So, now if we put both of them together, they'll look like this: :fear:  :fear:

Badrock2_medium

Now, wouldn't you much rather have these examples of Modern original comic art art hanging in your bedroom or living room, as opposed to those old boring comic art pieces by Alex Raymond, Hal Foster, Lou Fine, etc.?    lol

Can I just interject a quick comment thanking everyone for disclosing the information they've disclosed?  Thanks.

And, Rich and Redbeard and Bob, on a completely unrelated note, as long time Tahoe residents what's your opinion on global warming.  I was talking to an attorney I know with a house in squaw, the aptly named Tower Snow, who was telling me that the snow level in Tahoe are no where near what they used to be in the 70s.  Are/were you guys skiers?  Any opinions on climate change in Tahoe?  (Back to comics).  And next time I'm in Tahoe, I'd be happy to buy you guys dinner in Truckee and hear your stories.

hey buddy, I'm in Vegas, downstate. The weather up in Tahoe though is def not up to the 80s snowfall. Down here, I think we're having more days with 25% humidity than we used to and over in Death Valley, the heat has been hotter. The temps here have been about the average

Funny, is anyone also currently getting an error message that the item "has been removed by owner" when clicking on the link?

Has the recent conversations, here on the board, triggered something?  hm

I" getting the same error message.

I'm not in Tahoe either, not even the same state. I call the "City of Angels" my home. And, yes, it's been a real hot and humid summer. Never used to get this much humidity. I believe in global warming.

I believe there are covers known to exist, in a collection that is still tightly held. The owner got the material direct from Jerry Iger in the 1960s. How many or what covers, I cannot say. I just know there are indeed covers known to exist. Iger had a warehouse of material that included comic books and art going all the way back to Planet Comics #1.

Henry Keller, who used to won a used book store in Brooklyn bought the comics from Iger sometime about 1966 or 67 and would have piles of them at the NY Cons until they were gone. The problem however is that while they looked mint, the interiors were darkening even at that time. I recall buying quite a few books in 1968 at the NY Con for $2 each under Planet #20 and $1 each above that mark. #1 was $5. Does anyone remember what Henry's pal's name was? Al-something

now, while I don't normally talk about my finds, in general terms I can say that finds I was involved in included a huge find of comics in the mid-70s at a paper recycler in NJ who had gotten some 60 pallets of comics that were emptied from a warehouse that had Gilberton & the 1960s Superior reprints. There was a full pallet of Classics #169 for instance. I eventually told Sparkle City about the deal after buying about one pallet of books myself (I had loads of that Phantom Lady reprint and the Avon reprints). This material was limited in scope and from a later period

the Fawcett/Standard warehouse deal (of which I am still selling stuff, more than 30 years later) had Standard comics of the 1950s era, but none of the Nedor titles of the 1940s. Fawcett comics/pulps/magazines went back all the way to the beginning of publication in 1909, 3 copies of each unbound and 3 copies of each bound for each brother. They even had file cabinets with premiums and the small statues, but not quantities. Wherever those boxes of the statues that you see listed on ebay or sold at Heritage came from I don't know. They were not part of the warehouse.

I also had a huge paperback warehouse find once and of course, there was the Warren magazine warehouse.

There were other warehouse deals.. but these are the only ones you can have :-P

Thx Rich for the info. I was curious about the FH warehouse which was before my time.

I got one of the Seven Seas covers from Ron (or did I get both?). Sold them 25 years ago. who knows where they are now

You got one, Ferd got the other one. I think you go the 6 and Ferd got the 5 which was matted and framed on my wall. The 6 was missing the logo, and I needed to get a stat done since the logo has part of her hair in it before I had it matted and framed. I have not read further posts, but Rich and I are very old friends and we chatted about original art. Rich and I agree strongly on one point for sure. Please everyone, do not bleach or repair the art work. Adding a stat that does not do anything to the art of the piece is different if it allows viewing the piece the way it was published. But, do not have any form of restoration done to the piece. Enjoy any slight defects the piece may have as the patina of the original piece. Do not under any circumstances have anyone attempt to alter the art itself. Rich and I both feel that is the same as comic book restoration. Personally, I never understood grading a piece of art. Folks, you are looking at one of one. It's not like  you are going to get a better example of that page or cover.

Oh, so that's where Jon got his Mile High Wonderworld books from.  (thumbsu

Were these just the early issues or a large portion of the entire run since I know that Jon auctioned off his entire MH Wonderworld run on CC last summer?  I guess if he got only some of the Church copies from you, he was able to put together the rest of the run from some other big collector or dealer.

I know he got the Church run of Mystery Men from Geppi and Overstreet during the Diamond Int'l Galleries grand opening back in '95.  I mentioned to him at the time that I was primarily interested in only Mystery Men #1 through #10.  He commented that was the part of the run that he was really after, but it was either an all or nothing if he wanted to pick up the Mile High Mystery Men from Geppi and Overstreet at the time.  Looks like he most definitely made the right choice in the end by taking the whole thing.  (thumbsu

I know I had most of the run of Wonderworld from 3 up in the past. I got them from Chuck for a buyer of mine back in the day. His name was Rory McElroy. I can't remember if I ended up selling them to Rory or Jon. The Wonderworld 3 was not released for quite awhile until much later to Jon. I know I had a 9.2 at least  for #4 that was not a MH copy in my collection as well.

Rich and Bob do not live in Tahoe. John Knight  and myself live in Tahoe. Yes, less snow. Both of us do not ski anymore. I'm 74, brittle and recovering from a liver transplant.

Ron, best wishes on your recovery.  Before I retired, my boss had a liver transplant.  I remember the process he had to go through to get on the list and where on the list he placed.  He had to be ready to go once a suitable organ was located.  He is still doing great but the recuperation is obviously arduous.

I also appreciate you sharing here.  I have met Rich at OAFCON and bought books and won movie posters from his auction site. And unless my memory has totally, I bought from you via mail order back in the day.

Best wishes, again, for speedy and healthy recovery.

Ferd still owns the SS#5 cover. I purchased Beautiful Matt Baker Flamingo strip from him. Also Thanks to Rich I own the Crown #6 Ace of the Newsreels Splash.
