Mickey Mouse easily is and was more popular and more well known than Superman, or any other character of any kind ever pretty much.

Was not only Walt and Roy Disney's first animated character, but has become a symbol of a worldwide brand, not only through the comic medium, but also books, novels, film, entertainment and theme parks.

My take is at this point they are pretty much even in the eyes of the public. Everybody knows both very well.
