I appreciated his willingness to fight the fight for creator rights, even when it meant going up against your old bosses...

 

I talked to him for a while about it at a MotorCity Con years ago, and he was very generous with his time and his thoughts.

That's a shame...a lot of the early Marvel Bronze Age was the result of Gary's efforts. He was a prolific writer until he left comics.

I always considered "The Deserter" in Sgt. Fury #75 as maybe the most powerful Sgt. Fury I ever read.  Recently re-read it after at least 30 years, and it was every bit as great as I remembered...

Sad news. He was a very underrated writer in my opinion and I always enjoyed reading his work.

Check out Combat  9 from 1973 too. I think he was told it was the last issue and to go out in a blaze of glory and it's the craziest, pulpiest comic you can imagine. Just about everyone is either killed or maimed.
