Hi Ride the Tiger,

What you're seeing on the left upper corner, and along the spine, and on various spots (around surfer's head and legs on the red background and the title) is color loss / transfer.  this usually occurs when comics are stacked on each other + time + pressure + moisture + heat (or any combination of those) and the ink will be transferred off your book to the book on top of it.  The colors lost from your book are likely on the back of another book. 

Here's an example of one of my books that was on the receiving end of such a color transfer.  Look at the white title letters and the red color (likely from another copy of the same book) that was transferred onto the white letters.
