Much less stress...and infinitely more fun.

The most enjoyable convention I've been to in forever.  I could have spent far more money than I did because there was just so much great stuff.  Fortunately, I brought cash this time; so, when that ran out, I knew it was time to skedaddle so that my wife would take me back in. :roflmao:

I could have gone home broke without leaving Richard's booth, but managed to restrain myself.  I really missed @Weird Paper this year, as last year I got a ton of killer stuff from him.

OAF is simply a lot of fun. Sales won't ever compare with New York or San Diego or Chicago, but neither will the overhead. I could have been stressing about the drive to New York, the cost of hotels, the extreme hassle of load-in at Javitts, the ridiculous prices to park a van for the weekend, the trouble of finding a place to eat after the show, the physical exertion it takes simply to fight through the aisles to go to the bathroom, etc. etc. etc....

...or I could go to OAF, hang out with good friends, sell some stuff, eat at Benvenuti's with Steve Borock, Cat and Roxanne, Bud Plant, Tom Coker and Mrs. Bedrock, Pack up on Sunday and be home in my own bed Sunday night.

We actually had a very good show this year. Sales were brisk all weekend and some trades and purchases were made. I picked up some great inventory for the shop and site and managed to pick up a couple of things for the collection...

Hey Rich

did the show get advertised here on the boards and which city is it held in?  There is a finite chance I could drive to it next year as a road trip with the family or just my son.

Lots in of folks mentioned it but I don't think there was a specific thread announcement for it. It is in Norman OK on the first wknd of October. Very sweet this year as the Longhorns won on Saturday!

The 2018 OAF-Con may have had those dates locked down earlier than NYCC, but that's purely conjecture on my part.  I do know that date selection for a local convention is often driven by venue availability combined with potential for good attendance rather than competition with a mega-media convention.  In either case I don't see a direct competing interest.  Some of the bigger comic conventions ...SDCC, Chicago Wizard, NYCC, etc., are more celebrity, toy and cosplay driven affairs these days.  Sadly, comic books have almost become a perfunctory sideline attraction at the mega-shows with little consideration given to either the dealer's or the collectors.

Of course, mileage varies.  I like both large & small venue events.  But, if you still have lingering doubts that a smaller convention can provide BIG opportunities, just take another look at that George Rozen Shadow painting. :cloud9:

I really don't think so. The NYCC has had essentially the same weekend for the past 4 years at least (probably longer)...I'd bet it is Oct 3-6 next year...

OAF Con farts in NYCC's general direction.

What would be considered the best golden age comic book convention? I know the big shows don't sell as many as they used to and prices are very high, usually. Surely there must be someplace that has the best "old-school" comic convention? This one seems like it is pretty good, although too far to attend...any other shows have this kind of rep? Comic convention where you can find comics...

OAF has been around longer and with dates in early Oct for over four years.  In fact, if I'm not mistaken, OAF, as a fan club, predates Phil Seuling's NY cons.

Then again, NYCC is a tad larger, but arguably less fun these days than an OAF-con for comic fans and dealers.  Just sayin'.

BTW, I've had a couple of Chimay Ales with lunch, so my historical assessments may require a fact checker.

Depends on how you define "golden age comic convention". At 55, I was one of the youngest in attendance at OAF.

Bart changed the dates this year from the last weekend to the first weekend in October. NY has been the same weekend for a while. So in fairness, Peter is correct.

Thank you, and good point.  I didn't have that information in front of me.
