Newton Rings
15 15

Got back a 15 book batch today, and 5 of them have moderate-to-heavy NR located mostly in the center of the front covers. These NR  make it look like the book is badly stained (they’re not of course, just appears that way). Sigh.

Will be contacting customer service.

CGC has several different size holders that support the comics' thickness. I do 15 book submissions like clockwork and I just now received my first NR book--Solar #10. I usually have 1 or 2 thick books included in submissions.

The front has a NR spot in the middle--the back has extremely tiny NRs that is very difficult to see.

NRs seem to be largely caused by pressure. Press on the plastic where the NR is and you will see it expand, and then retract when the pressure is released. So, it could be that the slab is not thick enough to prevent NR.

Note: this was originally posted on page 15 of a thread in Comics General on August 31st. We're creating it as an announcement to make it easier to find.

The “rainbow effect” or “Newton rings” are a normal occurrence when two different plastics (which have different refractive indexes) are placed together. It’s what you sometimes see on a smartphone screen protector or on the edges of an LCD screen.

The rainbow effect has been seen in CGC holders since our first-generation holder was introduced nearly 20 years ago. This is a result of the inner sleeve (which holds the book) contacting the hard-plastic outer shell; the two different plastics have different refractive indexes and that sometimes creates a rainbow effect when they come into contact. A minor rainbow effect has always been within our tolerance. If anyone feels that they have a book that exhibits an extreme rainbow effect, however, we encourage you to contact our Customer Service at submissions@cgccomics.com.

Behind the scenes, we are constantly working to improve the CGC holder. Most recently, we have made a slight modification to the inner dimensions of our standard holder to accommodate the increasing variety of comic book sizes and paper stocks. In our testing, this minor modification was also shown to reduce the presence of the rainbow effect for many books. We did not want to share our findings until our thorough testing was complete, and now that it is, we are pleased to report that these modified holders have been fully integrated into our encapsulation process with very positive results.

CGC continues to research enhancements to its holders, including ones that may further reduce the rainbow effect, and we will keep you updated with any noteworthy developments.

Thanks again.

Any noteworthy developments yet?

Hey @Kevlar thanks for the backing board solution to address Newtown rings. Just curious would there be any way to avoid the scratch marks on the inside of the slab being reported by people trying this method?

Also how could we avoid the rings coming back like I think a couple of people reported?

I have received my reholdered books back. Three slabs were sent off. Two of them have one tiny NR and the other one is totally clear. I'm satisfied with the books so right now I'm getting ready for another submission. A big thanks to Brittany for taking care of this issue. CGCs customer service is excellent IMO.

Is CGC's customer service actually excellent if the same problem keeps occurring for an extended period of time?  Not to mention the responses as if they are normal?

I am speaking from my experience. I cannot speak for others.

I see two elements to this. The CGC leadership team need to take responsibility for correcting the design flaw that triggers the newton rings which, despite what anyone says, are hated by the majority. The excellent remedial service currently provided by Brittany - single handedly it seems - helps to paper over the cracks but doesn't fix the problem. Sooner or later I would imagine someone of her professional standing will tire of dealing with it and move on. That would be a sad day for the company if so. It can't be much fun for her, constantly managing NR related issues. I may be wrong of course, but I would suspect she'd be happier utilising her obvious enthusiasm and excellent people skills in other ways.

:preach:

This should really be the /end thread until CGC decides to officially respond instead of people glossing over the problem and saying 2 out of 3 were good!

You're right. Some if us have lower expectations than others.

We actually are doing a new video and yes...we found a way to remove NR without scratches. Waiting for a book with a decent amount of NR to do the video on.

wasn't the last video where you could press on it and the rings come back?
